- With Russian forces massed on the border raising concerns of a major offensive this winter, Ukrainian officials are now taking concrete, public steps to prepare the country for a wider war - specifically, a Russian air campaign.
Consequently, officials have bolstered air defenses across the country and readied bomb shelters in the capital city of Kyiv. Even so, life goes on for civilians - much as it has for the past seven and a half years of war.
Yet there is an unseen danger over the horizon.
Just a few hundred miles from Kyiv, more than 100,000 Russian soldiers lie in wait - the question is, what for?

@@jackiepaper101 well the truth is the other countries US invaded were under the orders of the older generations in the US. The mindset in America shifts with the generations, we elect new leaders and representatives (usually very different from the last ones) every 4-8 years so the policies of the 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s, 00s, etc. are no longer necessarily in place today. Russia on the other hand has had one leader for 20 years so policy doesn't really change fundamentally.

I live in Lviv, this is getting a bit scary, the US embassy told us we are on our own if war breaks out. There's been a few uncomfortable moments with Russia over the last few years I lived here, but they came to nothing. This time feel a little bit more real.

Well it's not the USA's problem.
Western Ukraine is probably the last part of Ukraine Russia would want to attack, but it's best to have a contingency plan and "emergency evacuation backpack" ready - juuust in case. You live close to the Polish border, best to have a car, without kids it's even walkable in perhaps one day (70 km) if the whole city has the same idea and you end up stuck in traffic.
It's even less likely they would bomb the roads to the border crossing, but just in case better to have paper maps (no GPS?) and an idea how to get there off-road or perhaps via forrest paths. Better safe than sorry...
Sorry if I'm scaring you, even in case of full war these measures are unlikely to be necessary, just something I would do - knee-jerk reaction basing on war stories I heard from the generation of my grandparents and great-grandparents.

Preparing a good defense can be good!
No, in case of war, peaceful surrender is their only chance. Russians are too powerful with much more modern and numerical weapons, to safe civilians in case of attack, surrendering is the best option. Ukraine is already the poorest country in Europe, if Russians bomb it, it would be materially too destroyed to recover in the next 50 yrs or so. And yup, they have literally 0 chances to defend.

There are no shelters in newer parts of Kiev and there is no place to hide in a winter cold city.

Basements and undergounds
A large part of Ukraine is rural areas. These shelters shown here in Kiev were built for the cold war. There are no new shelters and few military targets in Ukraine. Russia is not interested in attacking Ukraine , but only preserving distance between Russia and US or NATO military installations.
If more military hardware threatens Russia from Ukraine under control of US or NATO, , then it is a different situation.

It hurts hearing that some might have hope in other European countries to help, maybe even the union, but the fact is that no help will come. EU and other countries are too afraid of action against Russia. Russia has only 140k soldiers ready for attack, its nothing, they need at least 500k. 60k out 140k are young guys 18-20 y.o. without combat experience who have been forced to join the army under compulsory military service. Ukraine has more than 500k people with real combat experience who are ready and willing to fight. Ukraine also have a decent number of anti aircraft missles. The main problem would be missle attack. But it has nothing about occupation but rather damage. They will not be able to occupy and handle the land. Therefore there is no sense for them to start the war. There are also many other factors which would prevent russians from open attack. And they are not related to NATO or sanctions. Thats why everybody is calm in Ukraine and preparing for Christmas. Reality of war is different. You can spend years fortifying and defending but with modern tech it can all come crashing down in a mere few days. For example, 2020 NK war. If matched against a better equipped and stronger tech army, youre bound to suffer more casualties than the attacker.

And its obvious that during 8 years they have been rotated at least 8-10 times. Now put the numbers on calculator. And no, they are not just seating in the trenches. Almost every day there are wounded and dead from both sides. Today 1 ukrainian soldier has been wounded because of artillery fire. From January 1, 2021 till December 2 , 2021 there were 2367 artillery sheling fire towards ukrainians side. 65 soldiers died, 265 wounded.

This is a very deceptive video. You interviewed 2 English speaking people in Kyiv and declared that Ukrainians are preparing for Russian bombing. There is no preparation for war going on in Kyiv. The only preparation going on is for the New Year and Christmas.
1. The Ukrainian government and Defense Ministry have said that these Russian troops that are supposedly massed on the Ukrainian border are actually 250 kilometers away from the Ukrainian border and the equipment shown in those satellite photos have been there since the summer, when there was another invasion scare.
2. The government and the defense ministry have not announced any preparation for war. Troops and military equipment are not being sent to the border to defend against a possible invasion.
3. Reservists are not being called up to prepare for a possibble invasion
4. President Zelensky gave his end-of-year press conference on November 16 and he did not announce any preparation for war (the focus of the questions at the press conference was a scandal involving the use of a government helicopter to transport guests to his chief of staff's birthday party).
5. Zelenskyi delivered his annual address to the parliament on December 1 and he did not annouce any preparation for war.
6. Most of the invasion scare is taking place in the Western media and in videos like this. The Ukrainian media are not focusing on it because they know there are no invasion troops massed on the border .
