you made a good point! you can't keep the energy full throttle the whole set. I've described it for years as, you have to keep it like a roller coaster ride. what fun is a roller coaster that just goes straight up or just stays flat. the fun is in the ups and downs and twists and turns. and you spoke on bringing the energy down, which I too have talked about it as, when you come down it only makes that much more fun to come back up again. roller coaster.

Love this video it's exactly what I have been wondering how to do!tips were great and I think you should have a part 2 to this topic. You can even share some events where you successfully read the crowd. I will never forget the time I saw you at create in Hollywood. The dance floor was so packed that these 3 guys were about to get into a big fight I remember you saw that then dropped some cumbias mashup and everyone went crazy! It's like they completely forgot about fighting and started jumping together. Most awesome moment ever!!

Pre-made files with what you want to play most or the ones that are most banging, based on where you're playing that night could help you figure out what to make it. So if youre playing for 1 hr and each song is 3.5 to 4 mins and youre mostlikely only going to use 2.5 mins of it youd need about 30 to 40 tracks

The best way to develop reading a crowd skills is to play bar/lounge gigs. The patrons there are almost always composed of a mixed crowd. Also because the venue is so intimate, you can see easily if someone is feeling the song or not.

Great VLOG, reinforced what I thought was right about energy. Hate djs that just go all killer, no filler. The crowd energy needs to be controlled, this makes the drops hit harder and highlights the stand out tracks. Also I like to use bootlegs and remixes to keep different areas of the crowd happy.
Obviously to those djs that prerecord their sets then this VLOG will blow your mind!

Would love a vlog dedicated to what you mean by "storytelling." I've heard in your previous vlogs you use that term, as well as from other djs, how they try to tell a "story" with their track selections, but I'm not sure what you all mean by that. Maybe an example of what kinds of tracks/how you organize each performance, or an example of a "story" that you made in one of your previous performances would be nice :)

    hey laidback luke
your one of my favourite djs and i just wanted to ask if you could explain this to me or answer some questions for me.
    1. what app is best for production, i have fl studio and don't know if that's the best, yet its easy for me to use?
    2. im currently starting out to dj and have a numark mixtrack platinum, is that good or not what you'd not normally use at a festival. could you maybe do a video on the best controller to use or if it doesn't make a difference?
    3. could you do more like producing videos to help us use the apps you use so we can learn skills from you?, obviously not your secrets but just some tips.
    4. when should you be looking at signing to a record label?
    5. whats the best way to get your music out and be heard? is it soundcloud, spotify, youtube??

Tips for changing genres successfully during a set?

    • @infanimations
      @infanimations 6 лет назад +18

depends on the two ends of the transition. some tricks by me:
      1) loop song 1 at some point that sounds like it was in a build up, a vocal or something similar, and lay it over the build of song 2 slowed down to song 1s tempo, then linking the 2 tempos together and pitching the tempo up to the original tempo of song 2. the new tempo should be reached when the pause before the drop comes in, there you cut out song 1. this mostly works for increasing tempo, for example going from house (128) to trap (140).
1.1) if you have a song in the original and in a remix (Which is in another genre and/or tempo), you can play the version in your starting tempo, then transition to the second version in the new tempo. it makes it seem even more natural.
      2) there are songs that switch tempo in their own boundaries, like going from house to trap or moobathon. they can be used to easily transition between tempos.
      3) if you want to go down in tempo, what i usually do is either transition at the brake of the songs and more or less hard cutting to the second song in the new tempo, or using halftime to get down. an example would be to have a trap song at 150 playing, then transitioning into Propaganda by DJ Snake at 75. the crowd wont notice at all if both songs are in a breakbeat, but it can also work with other types.

KingKong lmao, it comes with the territory. very little sleep. lots of groupies. lots of travel and exhaustion = bad mood and less tolerance.

Thank you for this video Sir Luke! I just started my dj journey here in Japan. It's somewhat difficult to read the crowd because of the taste in music and language barrier. This vlog helped me a bunch. Thanks so much!

Your best video yet for DJs, you bring a global perspective only a high end DJ can provide. I would subscribe again if i could.

A good idea for a video is how do you choose your track lists?

For God's sake, ever since I found out that Laidback Luke would be present at Daydream Festival, I was dying because that day, I loved your set, from a very small dream to see you and listen to play live, without a doubt the best.

Proud pinoy over here! I grew up watching you, I remember you doing promo for the dmx-1000 when it first came out. But I definitely would want to see you do another in my mind video using strictly vinyl.

Hey Luke, a feedback from Brazil. I was shocked about people don't aprecciate the samba or tribal oriented eletronic, because for me that's the bomb haha. But is true that I've never heard a lot of this in the clubs.

Hey Luke! You should do a video on how to pick dj gear for beginners and whether or not the pioneer cdjs are worth the price despite all of the pros using them. Should we get a traktor kontrol s4??
