It was in what I presume was the admin block. The brickwork around it looked freshly moved and there were magazines / paperwork around it that were still dry. The plastic casette was very badly damaged and melted but the tape itself was just dirty.
wow! back in the day 1980/81 I was 12 or 13 and My Dad was area engineer for NEEB, North Eastern electricity board as it was then and in school holidays I would go with him, long before mobile phones etc he had a long wave radio under the passenger seat so he could be sent to emergencies of power outages as they are now known as! We went one day to Steetly Magnasite and I was in awe of the huge crystal blue swimming pools or in actual fact settling ponds (some worker or manger told me a cautionarey tale of some local kids that had drowned in one of the many ponds) and then I was allowed unacompanied to walk the wooden pier to the end where the sea water was extracted, good times long before the health and safety police arrived. Thanks to my Dad long gone, but I have been back walking our dog with my wife and seen the demolition of the site and chimney and now rebirth with modern houses.
Its a crying shame, looking at the website, seeing old photos from the 80's and 90's, clear blue see, and no litter in sight, look at it now, rubble and drug users and kids drinking in what looked a serene place.
Sadly gone but never gone my grandad worked-there from 1970-2004
Well done for finding this. Amazing place
