I have been catching and eating turtles for fifty years ! I catch as many as 50 turtles on a weekend, and enjoy till the freezer is in need of a refill . Turtles are one of the easiest things to catch and stock up on .
Here some solutions I use when fishing with chicken liver. First one, put liver on a board and leave in sun until side one has a tough skin then flip to side two. May have to flip several time, the purpose is not to dehydrate it to toughen up the outer skin. The second method I use is to use panty hose a cat fisher best weapon. Once you use the toes of the panty hose you will have to tie to knots. So tie the first one then put what ever amount of liver you want and then tie your second knot. Dont worry about getting the hook thru the liver, just run the hook thru the panty hose 3 or 4 times. It will not fall when cast out whether on a jug or pole. The fish have to suck the bait off the hook.
I know this is an older video, but, I always use sewing thread when I catfish with liver. I'm sure you've already remedied this, but just figured I would shoot a comment. Thanks for the videos.
If you put the liver in cloth tubular bandage and tie both ends and run the hook in and out a few times it will never come off. Just a tip. Great video.
I find that beef shank works best , but I don't use jugs , I find it much easier to use a oak stick and 150 lb test line thrown out about ten feet . Tried and true and easy to find .
Holy turtle catching.. The lake behind the house here is loaded with turtles.. I can almost always catch 2 or 3 a day with the pole and hook.. I never thought about using traps. I just catch for the fun of it and release, but I might get hungry someday.. They seem to love kosher beef hot dogs though.. Neither myself nor the old woman wear panty hose and I probably wouldn't be caught dead buying them in the store.. lol
I hope you get a big ol' snapper! I don't know if you've ever tried an anchor line on your jugs. that's how we'd retrieve ours. No boat or pole needed.
There was an old timer that lived across the creek and up the hill from us when I was a kid that would take small or thin turtles and put them in 55 gallon barrels, one each and feed slop to them like hogs.
two good ways we set liver. my way is to set it out on a rock in the sun to dry out. depending on the temp., 1-4 hours. then back in the sauce bag till we go. not perfect, but it really works good when casting and in current. my buddy go's to the pharmacy and buys this stuff called surgeons webbing. (I think that is what it's called) it' a piece of really thin clothe in the shape of a Chinese finger locks that we played with ass kids. just cut in sections, fill with liver, and tie it up with light fishing line. this works great, but I'm not one to pay for this. his way does stay in the little bag longer. hope this help even one cat!! we all love your vids!
John, referring to retrieving *turtle jugs*. I watched some guys one day with a radio controlled boat at the lake. I asked them what happens if the boat ran out of gas. They pointed behind them at a fishing rod with an open face spinning reel rigged up with a large weighted treble hook. They said they could cast it out until the line went over the boat then the hook would catch the boat. I don't know if some kind of adaption of their idea might help you get the jug lines farther out in the pond. John, if by some chance you have read this far, there is a question I've been curious about. Do you still ride? I haven't heard you say.
Hi John, do you have a side by side now? Just curious since I saw one in the video and haven't seen or heard of it before in your videos. Thanks for the video, I always enjoy watching your videos.
Love your videos. I need help getting turtles out of a pond - seriously no fish now, just turtles. Awesome idea and going to try it. Tried the PVC trap, didn't work. Any other ideas?
dude when we go cat fishing we use treble hooks to hold that skunky chicken liver on the hooks. let us know if it helps for turtles. works great for catfish.
John use a piece of pantyhose for chicken liver keeps it all together ,A blind friend taught me this trick works everytime. We always tied the line to a tree on the bank or drove a stake in the ground got some big turtles that way.
It is people like your and your family who will survive if all hell breaks loose, which under the circumstances over the last few months, that we seem to be heading in that direction. I see that the inner city and the rich who can't wipe their own butts with die out first. We do have to stick together and keep praying for God to come in and take control of this great country AGAIN. We have lost our country to tyranny and crooked government. We have to pray together and stay together. God Bless.

Try some elastic thread on those livers. I do it for catfishing and it works great!
I hope you get a big ol' snapper!

Any update...Did you catch anything in this pond yet?

Elastic string we use it to tie on clams when fishing in the ocean it works great
Do you ever noodle for turtles? Saw it done once. You'd have to be crazy. One think I will do is cook it up and eat it. Good luck.

Nice videos. Saying Hi from Argentina!
Love that hat
Atleast you didn't forget the camera
ya ever check you jugs and cant find it , then later is it going threw the woods or across the field ! yup
use garlic salt on your livers to toughen them up! adds great odor too!
I like to put a long pull line on mine, to a stake or a tree. that way you don't need a pole or a boat to retrieve
you got me turtle hungry!

thanks for sharing.

That works really well.I done it like that before.
^ I've always heard to do this as well. Can't hurt to try!
For catfish use treble hook with chicken livers inside the pantyhose and hold onto your pole, night fishing big catfish.,
I wrap it in sewing thread myself.
The bigger species of catfish don't normally live in small and stagnant ponds like that. The only ones you'll catch there are bullheads
Just tie some line to the jug and throw it out and tie the line on a big rock near shore. (a lot of line probably good)
When did you lose your pool? Good emergency water source.
where did you get your hat I'd love to have one thanks jimbo
Pantyhose instead of cheesecloth my friend...😁👍
hey that's where we got skunked buy the sqwerls last yr
Thanks J !
Cool!
J, Try using an old set of your torn Nylon pantyhose to put the liver in.
sheep skin condom w holes works good.too!
Instead of cheese cloth try nylon hose cut a plus the size you need
thanks brother..
try to catch 'em swimming homie
Hell to the yes!!!
You don't need a boat use a intertube or a air inflatable swim raft lol..
+Brandon Blount
That is pretty good idea. It would be pretty easy for a guy find these items too.
especially with livers
I use sewing thread on my liver.
hey john u should check out cats and carp channel he has sum good ideas on keeping liver on the hook
iv found gizzards work better than liver
