  • Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown (PC, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch) is an action Metroidvania that is a ton of fun and maybe a reboot for the franchise? I was skeptical, but it won me over. Let's chat.
Footage captured on PS5. Review copy provided by Ubisoft.

but unfortunately for now this is probably as good as it gets. people don't want to deal with iran and its government. the more important factor is probably that they don't have a market in Iran(the main target of a game absed on persian mythology) which is again because the Iranian governmet isolated itself and invited the world to sanction them.

Other than gameplay and smoothness, Persian is my mother language and they nailed the subtitle and voice acting. Surprisingly it is the first time we see this quality of work in our language and we are very happy. I felt honored that a game with Persian in its title finally gets the language right! And how well, perfect, it is perfect. I really recommend you to turn on English subtitle and at least try it on Farsi voice once.

It seems like the devs also did a fair bit of homework in terms of Persian history and mythology alike, such as with King Darius. I know the real king Darius probably didn't end up as a frozen giant who wields heavenly fire, but this game got me looking up more about the actual points of inspiration.
May this game and the devs get a lot of support and feedback, in praise, criticism and in-between alike.

Something people don't talk about enough (or that I know of) is the soundtrack by Gareth Coker (with Mentrix). This soundtrack goes HARD. It can be calm and beautiful and moody as well, but when it goes hard, it gets to absolute epic proportions to the levels of what the likes of John Williams, Hans Zimmer, and Danny Elfman put out, or even beyond that. It has some choir-work that would make Danny Elfman cry, and that alongside rockin' drums and guitars. - It actually got me, a musician who hasn't touched an instrument for way too long, to pick up a guitar again. I mean, really, it's fkn awesome! - It's also two and a half hours, by the way, but it's worth just putting on and having a listening-session, finding some favorites. I mean, yea, you have to be into that as standalone music. But I am. I rock out to soundtracks like this full-blast.

    • @KoralTheDad
      @KoralTheDad Месяц назад

The music is absolutely stunning! I love the use of the leitmotif from the main menu track over the course of different events, turning it more emotional, heroic or tense as the situation needed. I've also read somewhere they combined the traditional instruments with more modern sound and it's fantastic? It's definitely one of the highlights of this game, though I think it already has sooo many of them in general!

Not gonna lie, this is not the sort of game I play but love hearing your opinions on games, which is why I watched this video.
As for Prince of Persia as a franchise, I only have two experiences of the series. The film (which I really do not remember much about) and the original game back on the Amiga.
I absolutely loved that game but it was frustrating as hell as I never really got that far into it. Of course compared to today, the graphics were so basic, but back when it came out it was so revolutionary. The way the character moved was so much more realistic than most games back then (although games like Another World and Flashback took it to a whole nother level).
So yeah, gaming wise, it's the OG for me as that is all I have played.

I played the Mechner games, Sands of Time games, the Forgotten Sands, 2008 (which is actually terrific, it got a lot of shit for being “unfailable”) but I think they were on to something with that title and it had some legitimately insane set pieces. Sands of Time did stand out to me for the ridiculously good storytelling. The Prince narrating the adventure was groundbreaking and I think influenced a lot of games to try things like that.

Man, I would've connected this game's concept to the PoP trilogy lore by playing for example as the young adult son of the Prince. He wants to become an elite warrior and has big shoes to fill so he's never taken seriously by the Inmortals nor by his father. While the Inmortals go to the Prince's rescue, he goes on his own journey- he was there when they took his father and has seen the culprits so he follows that clue. The potential to continue the series completely fresh is there idk

I was introduced to PoP since DOS, and I have seen it evolved through the years. I'd say, this direction they did, is the right one for this IP. Prince of Persia back then was a breakthrough in terms of movement. It was the game before wherein you can move your character in almost 3 dimensions, and allowed you in game movement that wasn't seen in games of that era (Remember this was in the time of DOS systems). The level design was also good, surprising, and challenging. They tried an evolution towards God of War style gamplay because that was popular during the release of Sands Of Time, which was the PoP that I was the least fan of. This current version, looks like it paid homage to PoP roots as it tries to breakthrough traditional 2d-metrovania movement (though falls short of Dead Cells but still not bad). With that, I respect the current version, and I'm more inclined to even buy it now after Jake's review, as I believe that's where PoP should shine - dungeon movement and design.

For me this is so far an incredible game, graphically the art style is cool, movement, combat and difficulty like you mentioned is perfect and I think scaled very well as you go through the game.
I'd love them to go away and do another game similar to this with the original Prince even if it's taking the original story but keeping it in this platform style I think that could be a good move to get fans back on side because this game has gotten a lot of great reviews.

Sadly I don’t have the means to play WW/TTT anymore, but if I like this enough then I can probably snag a copy of SoT to play on the Xbox as it’s backwards compatible - OR I could just wait for the remake, but fudge knows how long we’ll be waiting for that.

New ideas are always appreciated, this game def caught my eye. I agree, it's a bit tiring having SO many remasters of games i already know. Plus i actually often prefer the old visuals. I love low poly models and ps2 textures

It's nearing 2 months layer, but here's my two Euro-cents: The very first PoP, the one you'd launch in DOS, was actually one of my very first games alongside wolf3d, Duke Nukem II, and Tomb Raider (which was mind-blowing, moving to "real" 3D), and then later I of course also ended up on the "Sands of Time" games, which I thought was a cool progression of it. - Heck, I even played "PoP 3D" before that, which actually was interesting enough because of the "re-imagining" alone, even if it didn't hit the mark. And then I wasn't too crazy about the style of that "reboot" (which I'll come back to), but they actually did what I wanted them to do, and that is to make a more "serious" follow-up using the Anvil-engine. Though, I didn't up playing it due to a very mixed reception. - But anyway, when they showed the first trailer of this latest entry, I was also like "tf is this", but probably more in how it kind of gave the impression of a simplified mobile-style game at first, especially since they seemed to try and act all "appealing to the youngsters" with the hiphop-music they added. It's such a (poor) marketing-move and it didn't do it any favors.
BUT, at that time, perhaps on the same day or even the same video or event (was it Summer Game Fest?) they also showed some behind-the-scenes stuff with I believe the director talking about what they were doing, and he made it clear that he was a fan of the originals and had a vision to made a modern version of it. - So then I was like "OK, we'll see then.", and indeed, I completely agree, it makes total sense as a modern present-day version of those old games, with even inspirations of basically all of them at that. - I think it could barely be done better.
I haven't played it fully yet, by the way, just the demo, but yea it plays really well and it even challenging, that's what matters. Now, I'm still not crazy about its flashy almost anime-like style, with everything being so crazy-fast and all that. I mean, the way I would have done it is keeping it a bit closer to the original, where motion is "realistic", as if you were watching humans from the side, though still with more action and perhaps even superhuman stuff like in the "Sands"-games. Yet, still not as "arcade-y" as what we got now. - STILL, I think it makes sense. It needs to be engaging or it would fall flat. I can really tell the developers gave it their all in terms of level-design, puzzles, action, feel, animations, cutscenes, art, and all of that. It's also a goddam polished and complete product, and I'm glad that Ubisoft greenlit this, because this is what I loved about Ubisoft-games in the past. I'm not even very down on their big bloated projects, at least some of them (though I don't care for how bland "Far Cry" became, while I really like the side-stuff like "Blood Dragon" and "Primal", for instance). But this is what should be supported more, from both sides.
Finally, something people don't talk about enough (or that I know of) is the soundtrack by Gareth Coker (with Mentrix).

Honestly, it's a mixed bag for me. The original games were something special - it wasn't just about its fantasy setting, but how it brought acrobatics to life in a way that felt realistic. Remember how the first game's movements were based on actual human motion? That brought an element of realism that was pretty rare at the time.
Now, everything's super flashy and leans completely into fantasy. It's more like Dead Cells rather then PoP. The combat and movements now feel totally exaggerated, prioritizing style over the authenticity that was the hallmark of the original series.
Ubisoft had a chance to take a different route here. They could've created a whole new IP, something fresh and exciting, just like they did with Assassin's Creed. Instead, they chose to go back to the Prince of Persia well, but in doing so, they've strayed from what made the franchise stand out in the first place. (Kind of what they did with Prince of Persia 2008)
I understand the need to keep things fresh for today's audience, but there's a certain charm and more grounded feeling in the original that's missing here.
So, while new players might enjoy the high-octane action and dazzling graphics, for others familiar with old PoP games it's a bit of a letdown. It seems like a missed opportunity to introduce a new IP that could have stood on its own, rather than trying to remake the classic and losing some of its magic in the process.
Thank you for coming to my TED talk.

Though it's not exactly the same type of gameplay, the Zeno Clash series and the recent prequel Clash: Artifacts of Chaos may prove interesting on providing combat in a great and stylish bizarre prehistoric monster world with more grounded movements.
You won't really see any parkouring or wall running acrobatics like in PoP though, but it's a series with very much its own identity, imagination, world, and solid gameplay in a bizarre yet oddly grounded world.

i play the sands trilogy every year at least once. it's one of my fav game trilogies , and i still enjoyed playing this new game.
I don't see it as a let down at all. it's clearly a different experience from the sands trilogy.
I'm just glad to get a new prince game , if this succeeds there's a chance we could get games like the sands trilogy. we're already getting a remake of sands of time.
as long as it isn't a shit game and actually succeeds, i don't see this new game damaging the reputation of the pop franchise

I still love Warrior Within. Pretty sure it was described as 'When Sands of Time started listening to Linkin Park' but I love Linkin Park so it was fine. I remember Ubisoft being the company that made cool acrobatics in games. Splinter Cell had things like climbing and split jumps, Assassin's Creed had parkour, but Prince of Persia had crazy swings, flips, slides and jumps. It's nice to see them bringing that back a bit with this one.
I played the demo and had some fun, but I still have the 'this is 80 Australian dollars?' feeling. The storytelling especially just sort of felt low budget. If it was a bit cheaper I'd be much more likely to pick it up but at the moment I think I'll wait for it to go on sale.

9:52 if leaks are anything to go by and a news update in November SOT remake may be closer than we think, and I kind of expect these two to coexist simply because that’s something Ubisoft had been doing recently with it’s IP I’m also noticing a tone shift with POP it’s going back to not entirely light hearted but less god of war like warrior was

Been a fan of Prince of Persia from the 90's, when the original 2D platform game released on 3.5" floppy disc! Was one of my favourite games as a teenager. I then bought PoP 3D sometime later. So Prince of Persia is just so nostalgic for me, like the original Doom & Doom II...

Look, this game is good and fun. I do enjoy it BUT I don't want this style to be the future of POP franchise. I want to see an actual AAA POP game in full 3D 3rd person action adventure again. POP deserve it. Yes original classic POP was indeed in 2D style, but we all know the 3D era is the one that make POP popular. I mean just imagine game like DMC and GOW somehow got a new game and it was 2.5D style like this. Sure it could be good, but trust me a lot of people will dislike it. Another actual example I can give is Darksiders Genesis. This game was okay, but a lot of people don't like it much since it is not a full 3D like the previous games. Again, I don't hate this Lost Crown, I love it. But for real, if this Lost Crown was actually in full 3D hack and slash game, this game will blow up in hype. This Lost Crown is really not in many people radar for getting new game now, not even for most POP fans. That is the sad thing because this will lead to Ubisoft thinking people don't want POP back. People want the actual POP game in 3rd person back. Not to mentioned the remake of SOT that supposed to be in development now...which idk, they could be cancelled it...that game is in development hell now. It just sad to see this is what happen to POP franchise now...

I'm so ready for a good metroidvania and it's a bonus that it's a POP game.
