Can This 450bhp RS5 Make Me An Audi Fan?

  • When it comes to German cars, I've usually been a BMW or Porsche fan. Audi and Mercedes have never quite delivered what I wanted. However, the M4 left me very disappointed and now with the opportunity to drive a first generation V8 RS5, will I find something to love about Audi?

I drive my RS5 daily - wouldn't want to drive anything else. The traction advantage, the sound and the way the car makes you feel - priceless. Mine's facelift and there's a considerable difference between the two. Facelift makes the quoted power, its gearbox is improved (hydraulics) weighs if I remember correctly 30kg less, looks better due to facelift lights, panels etc.

    As a 5 year owner of a 2013 Audi RS5:
    1. It's big? Here in the USA, it's not that big. It's certainly not as big as the average car in the USA WHICH IS A Full Size Truck/SUV. It's no Volkswagen Jetta, but it does not feel as big as something like a Dodge Charger/Challenger.
    2. Gas Mileage? Again, compared to the average car (which is a truck), it's normal. If you compare it to similar cars, like a V8 American Sports car or a similar sized Luxury coupe, it's not so bad compared to modern turbo cars.
    3. Expensive to Maintain? It's a halo car for real people. You can take it to the local drag strip and put down solid 12 second passes, then drive it across your state (or country in Europe) at 175 mph to make it to your local Opera showing. It is a luxury coupe and it is also a sporting GT that approaches the highest limits of car performance. German cars require attention, maintenance and care, German cars also reward you for your trouble. If you love the car, it is worth it and you will love it if you ever drive it.
    Other Complaints:
    * Heavy Steering? The car has 3 different settings of steering feel that you can set. Dynamic is wonderful when you're sweeping the fast lanes clear on a long drive, but will tire you out in normal driving. Try using the Comfort mode if you need a break and plan on having a leisurely drive, but even on your first drive, you should probably try them all out to decide on your preferred mode.
    * Transmission Jerky/Upshifts a problem? The transmission also has 3 different settings basically Lazy->Calm->Jumpy. You should try them all out to decide on your preferred mode. ALSO, these transmissions are learning, so if your personal driving style does not match the driving style of the previous driver, then you need to use the reset procedure so that it can learn what you like. I have "FIXED" at least 3 other RS5 owners' "transmission problems" with this.

@@bartbielaszewski you're on the right track but slightly off: The front Fenders ARE aluminum instead of steel like you inferred but it's not the different metal base that makes them look different, it's the shape. If you look at any B7 RS4 and its aluminum front fenders there will be no difference in the perceived color. Audi made a smoother transition on the RS4 compared to the boxy Rs5 fenders.

Depends how you up and down shift! This car's motor likes revs (and conversely, the driver usually likes the v nice exhaust note that comes with them!) and you have the steering wheel paddles so you can pick the revs to suit and conduct the exhaust/acceleration orchestra accordingly. Sports mode, one of the 4 driving mode options, revs high and notably stiffens the suspension but you'd normally only use it if you just robbed a bank or want to have a good fang!! Yes, she is big and hefty but she's got the right wheels and suspension to keep her on the road and she dances well! You can then pay for the fuel after robbing the bank! No, it's not that thirsty really! This also depends on how you driver her.

    Great review as always James.
I've got a facelift of these - 2014, it's my daily driver but my commute to that station is only 2 miles! I've had the car for 3 years - the engine is a masterpiece and the gearbox works well when you're gunning it. Less great around town - it's a bit jerky. It's also very comfy in comfort mode and is a seriously capable cruiser. In my ownership, i have had re-occuring problems with the DRC (audi's adapative dampers) - they leak and fail quite a lot. I've had 3 of the 4 replaced, under extended warranty. FYI in my 3 years of onwership, i've done less than 15k miles, so there's clearly a problem with them. I've had the brake-disc problem James mentioned in his video, however it should also be mentioned that people that hold the car on the foot-brake in traffic are likely to experience this more.
RE the engine in this generation of RS5 and RS4 - the B8 4.2 V8 is different i believe it the 4.2 V8 in the B7 RS4/R8 V8. IIRC this is related to Audi's later V10 unit.
The multi-media system is pretty average now - i believe 2015 cars had android auto/apple car play but don't take my word on this as I am not sure.

Not sure if it’s my imagination or poor memory, but the facelift feels like it turns in better, feels slightly lighter (?!) , upshifts faster and quicker on corner exit too. the Audi A series are pretty good for - ahem - audinary drivers and driving, but when you're going at proper speeds that engine slung out over the front axle results in terminal understeer and horrible handling. It's not helped by the weight either. But I suppose if I wanted to drive like that I should have an R8, right?

I find the different driving modes make such a big difference. But if I’m honest - I also drive mine in Individual with the steering in Comfort and the same for the suspension. I find Dynamic is just a bit barmy for daily driving. In Dynamic and auto it loves to surprise you with a vicious downshift and holds onto to the gears all the way!

Great Video! I watched this after owning the 2015 RS5 for half a year now. Let me tell you, even with the costs at the pump under Uncle Joe, it's my daily and no issues. I get about 26 miles to the gallon. And the tires, I just got all Michelin Pilot 4S for under $1100 with an alignment. This car is my baby and because I don't yet have a wife, I can afford to keep it. I would guess it wouldn't stay too long after pumping out some kids, but my nieces and nephews absolutely love it! FYI, from what I have read on many chat rooms, this is not the same engine as the R8 at all. It was made from lessons of the V-10 and except for the 4.2 liters, has little to nothing in common with the R8's engine. I didn't realize that until after I purchased it. But it alwast bothered me that it had different horsepower and torque than the R8 as well as redline. The engine was made exactly like the V-10 minus two cylinders. Loved your take on the car.

Very nice review! I was looking at the RS5 about a year ago but decided against it due to the added weight of the V8 and the terrible fuel economy that came with it. I chose a 2015 Audi S5 instead. It does have 120 less hp (but around the same torque) but I average 23 mpg in city driving and close to 30 mpg on the highway. Also being a supercharged 3 liter v6 means that there is less weight up front. I also made sure to get the upgraded Audi Sport rear differential which, when combined with the lighter engine, helps to prevent the understeer problems that the earlier S5/RS5's had. Also, since it is a supercharged v6, it shouldn't be too difficult to make back part of the 120 hp loss with a few thousand in aftermarket upgrades. Overall, I'm super happy with my choice, especially since this is my daily driver, although sometimes I wish this car sounded as good as the RS5. Maybe I should take a cue from BMW and play the sounds of a nasty v8 over the stereo while I drive it around?

    • @robertfitzpatrick3141
      @robertfitzpatrick3141 6 лет назад +4

I find that an odd comment, there is approx 60kgs weight difference in weight from the V8 to the V6, as for the sports differential its on the 2011 model of the Rs5. The RS and the S really aren't comparable at all, I used to think the same having a B7 S4, compared to a B7 RS4, it was night and day, that car was 80bhp shy of the RS4 then and wouldn't come close performance wise, not to mention setup wise, in terms of suspension and braking, transmission etc, even down to body panels being made from different materials. the Rs5 has 120hp more even with the S having a supercharger, you could upgrade the Rs5 engine to add a supercharger, it would take it to 644hp tried and tested.

Two different animals, M4 vs RS5. M4 lighter but with a turbo which has pros and cons. RS5 is heavy, AWD which is not really necessary and adds to the weight but with a more stable, planted ride. I’d rather have an RS5 with a larger displacement V8 with more torque and less revvy, but Europeans don’t do that. RS5 has to be revved up to have fun unlike M4 and then don’t have a gas station be too far away.
