iTunes Backup Location Change - How To Change iTunes Backup Location on Windows PC
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 5 окт 2024
- By default iTunes store backup files in Windows system drive. We can easily get rid of this by creating symbolic link of CMD NTFS Junction Point. Unfortunately iTunes doesn't provide any easy way to change the default backup file location and change it to another drive! This is not really good practice at all. In this video I showed you how you can easily identify where the iTunes backup file is stored by default and how to change iTunes backup location on Windows PC. For example in Windows 10, Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows Vista, Windows XP.
Default iTunes Backup Location...
C:\Users\{{Your User Account Folder Name}}\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup
Note: The system drive can very PC to PC.
Command To iTunes Backup Location Change...
mklink /J "%APPDATA%\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup" "Destination Link. i.e. D:\Backup"
Note: You need to use exact same command provided here. Otherwise you will not be able to change iTunes default backup folder location.
The method I showed you here within this video is applicable for all iOS devices like iPhone, iPad etc. Because iTunes works in same way for all iOS device backup. To change backup location of iTunes you might use some third party software if you can't mess with symbolic link creation using CMD. But as I provided you the full command to create a symbolic link for iTunes backup file location you can easily copy and paste it in CMD. So I do believe with very little effort you can do it yourself. No need to buy or spend money for just a one time work.
If you still have any question or if you face any problem please let me know in comment section. I will try my best to help you to get rid of the problem.

Finally an iPhone-related tutorial video that:
1) teaches us something new / not obvious
2) actually works
Well done, sir.
Thank you for your nice comment. Let me know on which topic I should make my next video..
That was brilliant! I’d been scratching my head about the lack of space suddenly on my c drive despite keeping it only for system files. Now thanks to your video I have 77gb free! Huge thank you 🙏🏻
man i think you just saved my life haha! my iphone back up is 70GB i was 5 minutes away from clean wiping my whole pc just to restore my back up that i saved to my SSD 😅 life saver!!
Mklink gives error in Windows 10 in powershell can u pls help me out
Just commenting here so I can know if they update a way for windows 10. Same error issue happens to me too
I am also having windows 10 Error. the command needs to be different, but still with the proper command its not working for me its saying backup is corrupted in itunes. Help please. here is command for windows 10 (replace USERNAME) :
MkLink /J “C:\Users\USERNAME\Apple\MobileSync\Backup” “D:\MobileSync\Backup“
@@yaskewween8739 congratulations error fixed after 1 year😂
My Apple files are not located in AppData, and instead in a folder called Apple, then MovileSync, then there’s the backup folder. I tried modifying the pathways but I’m not quite sure how to, and powershell isn’t recognizing mklink
Is there an updated version i really need to back up my phone and things have changed
Yes! The right click command opens Powershell but you want to open CMD, so if you go to the top of your folder and click in that location field “This PC > Local Disk (C:)” if will highlight that field, just type CMD and hit enter and that allows you to open CMD in the folder. Hope this helps if you hadn’t found a solution yet
Finally, no nonsense and so easy to understand!
I tried to do exactly the same but I am getting an error. The term “mlink” is not recognised as the name of a cmdlet, function, script file, or operable program.
I guess you are making a typo or probably trying to use mklik in the powershell instead of CMD right?
Hi, if I copy my backup from Computer A (in C drive) using pen drive, then I transfer it in computer B (in D drive) does the backup will works?
It should work. But I never try it though

Viewers who face problem with hard link creation follow these steps...
1- Delete current backup folder from MobileSync folder.
2- Click inside address bar and copy current folder location from address bar. Your current folder location might look like "C:\Users\Guest\Apple\MobileSync\Backup". Whatever it is just copy the full location.
3- Then use this command mklink /J "C:\Users\Guest\Apple\MobileSync\Backup" "Here write the destination backup folder location for example, D:\Backup"
4- Press enter.
Anyone with backup folder creation problem can comment with his current backup folder location and destination backup folder location. I will help you to get rid of your problem.
how to undo the whole junction and restore itunes backup to its default location in your C drive? Would deleting the linked "backup" short cut folder with the little arrow work? If you delete the "backup" short cut folder in your C drive, will the actual folder in your G drive get deleted too?
Also, in windows 10 there's another folder called "Roaming" after Appdata.
And how to restore that backup into iphone ..? Since we are saving it different drive
its my first time to writ a comment in RUclips . and its for you because you are the best, its work very well and you help me a lot .............. thank you
Thanks man! Had to edit the file location a bit to fit the original folder, but after that, it worked flawlessly!
I'm working on it at the moment but it appears as if my original folder isn't in appdata either.
Mr. Rafi thanks for video, can you tell me how do you have apps icons on window like Mac, itunes looking on bottom screen?
I used a software I can't remember the name right now. Maybe object doc. If you are interested I can make another video on how to decorate Desktop like I do..
Hey, your vedik is superb. But my problem little more of what you explained. I have taken back up and then formatted my phone and now when am restoring then it’s showing less space. How to do now
thank you so much it's 2021 and apple still hasnt come up with a directory alternating for Backup, this helped a bunch, thanks !
Thank you for your comment too.
C:\WINDOWS\system32>cmd /c mklink /J "%APPDATA%\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup" "E:\My itunes Backup"
The system cannot find the path specified.
Thank you soo much😭😭. when my disk was filling automatically when I downloaded itunes, i ignored that it is backuping my 40gb phone data which I don’t even need
after i click enter in cmd there's a backup folder but when i open it, it says location is not available
thanks bro for your advice but can pls advice if we wants to restore the same date then is it possible if yes then how ?
Yes you can restore any backup. Just copy paste the backup you want to restore within the newly created backup folder.
Thank you man! Good work! You've just saved me buying a new computer or a new hard drive I'm still rocking Windows 7 also. Subbed before I even tried it myself! 👍
Thanks a million man... 🙏
i think i have an alternative..
after moving the backup folder to another location, right click on the backup folder -> send to-> Desktop(create shortcut) ... a new shortcut will be created on the desktop.. now simply copy the shortcut folder to the "MobileSync" folder in C:\..
-->this eliminates the code part in command prompt..
-->if you want the backup folder in its original location just delete the backup shortcut in MobileSync and replace it with the original backup folder
--> this also avoids having you to delete the original backup folder
correct me if im wrong.. im not sure if this works..
I got your idea. Let me try. If I succeed I’ll make another video and credit you for the idea. Thanks..
No it doesn’t work. Only the way I mentioned here will work. I just checked it.
This is the best video I have seen on how to do this. Thanks, Rafi, it worked!
My pleasure. :)
I found the error

I had to install a registry modification to allow me to have a "command window" option instead of a PowerShell window option. I got the same error you had with the PowerShell window. You can find that modification easily through Google.
@@aigledemasyaf i got that...
It tells me cannot create a file when that file already exists... what should i do?
Hi, you have presented the video in a fabulous way which I really like. Thank you very much!
I would like to know how to remove the hard link that I already created.
You can simply delete the folder as normal folders. Then create a new folder naming it Backup so everything will be as before. Hope this helps.
So there is no need to launch imd and get it done through there?
IMD = ?
Sorry i meant cdm. My bad
No. As said just treat it as a regular folder.
Guys for all who are on Windows 10 and only find power shell command prompt U can open cmd from searching it up and pasting what he wrote there and it will just work as fine

Bro after using this method, I’m unable to restore the data back into the phone. Kindly advise.
Can you please explain exactly what issues you are facing?
Hey,
the "Apple Computer" Folder in the Roamimg folder is missing :/
What can i do?
I think you didn't install iTunes on your computer?

Hi are you got right path
Can’t you just go into itunes preferences & in the device (or advanced I forget which) tab it shows your backup path & a button to the right “change” to change your backup folder, then select the different drive & folder & be done???
It is a new feature. Once the video was created there wasn't any feature like this.
Hi bro can u give explain me how to change location when I take backup Because my c drive not enough to take backup
Instead of c drive you can backup in another drive too. Just change the drive letter from the give command. If you are still facing issue let me know in details. I would try my best to help you.
Excellent, well done! Easy. Worked in Windows 7 exactly as described *****

Hi my backup was in C drive when i wish to restore backup in phone there is no enough space available in C drive for image file created while restore as a result restore is failed. Please suggest what i can do
You need to clear up some space in the C drive.
Most things work for me except the cmd command code

Try using MkLink instead of mklink. Also make sure you are using elevated CMD

Hi..
i have backup my iphone in external hard drive and my computer is not able to work.can i restore my iphone from new computer?
Please help me..because my iphone is totally erased.
You should. First connect iPhone to new computer. Take little bit backup. Cancel it. Then go to the backup folder and delete the recent uncompleted backup. Copy backup file from external HDD to the backup folder. Then again connect iPhone to your new computer and see what happens
this process is possible for that problem?
Yes possible
Thank you so much rafi for the suggest best solution for me and that solution really work. My iPhone and me feeling much better 😂. Again thank you so much rafi🙏🏻.
No deceiving complement but this was the solution of my problem because I initiated back up of my iPhone on iTunes on my laptop and it failed because no storage left, the drive shows that it’s completely Ish but when I enter it it doesn’t show the back up folder unless you do what’s done in this video and show the hidden drives and the back up folder for the iPhone

mklink doesn't work in Windows 10 powershell, you must use CMD and type in the entire directory, the %APPDATA% needs to be replaced. Also, at 2:11 /j stands for junction and not hard link, /h is the hard link command.
Thanks for corrections
