I got so distracted with other reading that I barely read any of the 24 books I specifically chose for last year. So, I'm still doing the tbr game from the Reading 1001 group on Goodreads, again, but I'm thinking about setting an additional 1001 list tbr too for next year. The Goodreads game has us list 24 books, numbered, and each month the admins select a random number, which is the book for that month. I finished 2 of the 12 selected books, and just 6 additional List books.
Fun way to pick your TBR. I have a different book by Haasse on my mental TBR - In a Dark Wood Wandering. I’ve never seen anyone talk about her on booktube.
Thanks for this, Deb. I've been seeing Kestrel For A Knave EVERYWHERE on BookTube. Isn't it funny how certain titles keep bubbling to the surface? Happy Hols and all the best on your 2025 reads.
I may try and join you for The Pursuit of Love. H Rider Haggard books are fun from what I remember of reading them as a teen. Definitely split up the Hardys! This is a really great mix of books and a fun way of picking!
Hi Sandy. Great to be back in the “regular” video routine together. I see some books fulfilling both criteria: author and title with H. I suggest they become mandatory for 2025. Just to make it more fun ❤🎉… Happy holidays 😊
The Hand of Ethelbertha is a woman who writes and every man seems to fall madly in love with her- and she disguises family as servants to try to pretend she is all that and a bag of chips and the whole time you are like ??? I kept laughing but it is a longish book - the woodlanders is supposed to be closer to autobiographical and way more depressing kinda “way it’s always been” traditions getting tempted by new and exciting and consequences- the major of casterbridge is my favorite! Man gives family away in a bar and the fallout that continues to happen is very Hardyesque style! Loved it! Happy reading ❤
Camera Obscura is a really interesting book about Dutch society. It’s quite funny as well if you’re Dutch as many scenes are still apparent today. For people who aren’t Dutch I’m not sure if it’ll have the same effect though
That's a fun way to decide what to read! Hopefully you don't have too much trouble trying to find everything. I've read about 15 of them. No 5* favorites, but two stand-outs were Smilla's Sense of Snow and A Question of Power (this one was a difficult read dealing with difficult topics, but worth it in the end) . Least favorites were The Left-Handed Woman and Blind Man With a Pistol. A lot of shorter ones in the mix here so you should be able to knock off a bunch fairly quickly while dealing with some of the more daunting ones.
I need to go through your list and write down titles so I can do a bit of background checking and see if I want to read any of them. 🙃 Love seeing the Lists coming out again! 🤗
Kristien Hemmerechts is a well known belgian writer, literally translated the title is Margot and the angels 🙂 I read it, in the original dutch, back in 2003. Not sure anymore what it was about 😁
The Year of the H! Haha, what a lovely way to eliminate decision fatigue! I know you mean to read the entire 1001(+taxes) list, still, this randomisation method can bring so many hidden gems to light. Have fun reading in 2025!
Yay!! Love the lists! I need to look some of these up for sure. I will keep my ears open for when you read Hardy because i know I'll love those. 😅 I loved Kestrel for a knave
It's hard to find unique ways to switch up reading lists. I started a Goodreads group for nonfiction reading, and give 12 prompts each year... after awhile, everything seems repetitive. 🤷🏻♀I don't generally like to read more than 1 or 2 books by the same author in any given year, but as long as you have fun, no worries!
I love the idea of using a random letter picker and focusing on that letter. I spun an online letter picker wheel, and got E. I'll have to see which books from that letter I can find for next year. It does make you notice titles you might not have otherwise on the list. I had not noticed Enright or Erdrich were even on the list til I sorted it alphabetically to look at the Es.
Would love to buddy read The Hand of Ethelberta and The Woodlanders with you. I enjoyed The Mayor of Casterbridge. Good to see you gearing up for next year!❤
Hella Haasse is a dutch writer and very famous for her book Oeroeg about a friendship between two boys in Indonesia, then a dutch colony. My favorite of hers is In a dark wood wandering 🙂
Hehe you could always really lean into misery may and go for ALL the Hardy to make yourself extra miserable 😄 I kid Surprised to see Stranger in a Strange Land, tho it is a SF classic, I would expect others more. Skillets sense of snow is great! I randomly got it at a yard sale knowing nothing, and it really made me love Nordic noir. Great representation of that style, while also being something very strange and different! Super readable despite size.
“The Hand of Ethelberta” is the closest thing to a comedic novel that Hardy wrote. It’s lighter fare than his other novels. “The Woodlanders” might invoke tears. It doesn’t get recognized as much as “The Mayor of Casterbridge” but it should. I hope to read “The Go-Between” m by Hartley sometime in 2025. I’ve seen positive reviews for it.
H worked out pretty well. I've read the Haggard books: fun old adventure novels. Read House of the Seven Gables and liked it better than Scarlet Letter. Seen the movie version of Kestrel for a Knave; it's good. The Heinlein needs to be the 1991 version. :) I think all the printed ones these days are that. The Haase, Hildebrand, and Honchar might be hard to source. Second time in 12 hours that I've come across Hrabal. Must be a sign. :)

I loved Smilla’s sense of snow. Beautiful book 😊
@@eiketske excellent to hear! ❤️
That's about the only one I've heard of, that and the Thomas Hardys. Smilla's Sense of Snow was made into a movie, starring Julia Ormond.
This list has so many books I’ve never heard of. Love how random the planning is to the books you’re reading this year. Fun! 😊💙
It was a fun way to pick and added a lot of variety
Fun way to pick your TBR. I have a different book by Haasse on my mental TBR - In a Dark Wood Wandering. I’ve never seen anyone talk about her on booktube.
That is one of my favorite books by Haasse and in general 🙂 Wonderful historical fiction about Charles d’Orleans in 15th century France
Interesting! I am curious about her writing.
I enjoyed the memoirs and confessions of a justified sinner. I'm also reading through the 1001 list! : )
I can guarantee you that The Mayor of Casterbridge and Kestrel For A Knave are excellent 📚
Perfect!!! I am ready for it!

Awesome!! Gina said she was going to bring it camping this year 🤣⛺️
@ 👏
I also read the Go Between. I think you might like it. It was not my cup of tea, but Nicole on a day of small things really loved it.
Loved that book. Distressing but excellent.
@ great writing, but yes distressing
Good to know. I am going in very blind
Hi Sandy. Great to be back in the “regular” video routine together. I see some books fulfilling both criteria: author and title with H. I suggest they become mandatory for 2025. Just to make it more fun ❤🎉… Happy holidays 😊
I hope to be making regular videos again for sure!!

Interesting!! We will see when I pick it up.

Yeah. I hope not. I haven’t looked for any of them yet. My library system is pretty decent but I imagine I will have to buy some
I love lists and when my lists have lists...speechless! Great video!
@@MyBookHauledLife-Essie I should make a list of my lists 🤣🤣
Lots of choices I've enjoyed and some that look intriguing and I've added to my list. Haggard is really fun!
Lots of new to me authors! Should be an interesting year

Always up for a buddy read if one appeals to you! ❤️

We shall see how it works. Thankfully these authors are not on my “hate them” list 🤣
Novel approach Sandy! Nice mix.
I've wanted to read something by Anais Ninn ever since the name turned up in Jewell song. 🤪
Ooohh!! Should be an interesting one!
Oh, I just read Hollinghurst's newest novel, Our Evenings and loved it. Will read another of his with you.
Awesome! Let me know which one interests you the most
In the Line of Beauty sounds good. Margret Thatcher as the devil reference, grabbed my attention. @MsReadsAlot

What an interesting method for choosing titles. Hardy and Hesse are authors I admire. Other good authors in H too.
It seems like a good list for being a random selection. Excited to get started with them
Would love to buddy read The Hand of Ethelberta and The Woodlanders with you. I enjoyed The Mayor of Casterbridge. Good to see you gearing up for next year!❤
Awesome!!! We will have to figure out a good month!
Paradise of the Blind was a great read.
Excellent to hear!
It’s an interesting way to select your 2025 reads!
It was a lot of fun! Love the mix
This was a fun way to create your 2025 TBR for this reading project! Good luck with these.

It will be interesting to try and find some of these books. Fingers crossed that I don’t run into too many problems
This was fun! 3 Hardy’s in a year is a lot though, even for a Hardy fan 😂😅
At least it wasn’t 3 James Joyce or failkner. I can handle Hardy ❤️
I read king Solomon’s - it is very chauvinistic and is one of his books featuring his hero Alan Quartermain.
