I’m Canadian- we all remove outdoor shoes in our homes. It’s considered extremely rude to wear your outside shoes into someone’s home. It’s so ingrained it’s normal.
In Switzerland it is the same. Remove your outdoor shoes & put on slippers. I am actually South African, but we did that in our house in Durban. Mum was raised by German nuns in Boarding School.😊
Switching between outdoor and indoor shoes is standard practice in Japan all-year around. They don't do it just in houses. They also do it in some shops, especially the kind that sends traditional kimonos and such. Even within the shop/house, if you are going to step onto tatami (fine matted floor), you take off even the indoor slippers and walk in socks. If you're not brought up in Japan, you might get caught with a hole in the big toe of your sock (as I once did)!
Great advice...epecially changing into slippers once inside the front door! (as you say there are all sorts of nasties on the sidewalk). Btw, have you noticed how all toasters come with the shallowest crumb trays that always seem to spill crumbs onto the counter top? I managed to find a small enamel coated shallow cookie tray the same colour as my toaster that I rest the toaster on, and it collects most of the 'crumb fall'. Merry Christmas to you and your family Taryn!
I aways take my shoes off when I enter my home even when I have families and friends they always take off there shoes off . All what you mentioned I do this all the time it make me feel good.
Merry Christmas and Best Wishes to you and your family for 2025, Taryn!! ❤ Your tip, in a previous video, when you showed your makeup routine, about applying the waterproof eye shadow pencil, over your eyeliner was brilliant!!!! Thank you! 😊
Taryn, I noticed that you store your indoor shoes on different shelf to your outdoor shoes. I do this too. This is the key thing to do otherwise it’s just pointless. If they’re just swapped over to the same space/shelf it just transfers the germs from the soles of the outdoor shoes to the soles of the indoor shoes. I’ve seen too many people do this & it makes no sense to me, they may as well have kept their shoes on indoors. I have a porch at the entrance of my house with a little threshold step & the rule is no outside shoes come in past that step & no inside shoes go out past that point. The difference in the water colour when I clean the two floors tells me that it’s definitely worth doing. Especially as I have a lot of carpets & rugs.
I sterilize my outdoor shoes by standing in a prepared, shallow antibacterial solution, before I enter the house to prevent bringing bacteria, etc. inside and once in, I still change my shoes to another pair that I only wear inside.
Please consider adding a seat inside your entry door, so people can sit down to take off their outside shoes. A bench seat with two shelves under it lets you store outdoor shoes on the lower shelf, and indoor shoes or slippers on the upper shelf. Changing your shoes standing up is awkward, and if you have visitors with any balance or mobility issues, they won't be able to do that at all. If you're having indoor air quality issues, you need your HVAC inspected, maybe serviced, maybe upgraded. A quick way to monitor air quality is with a CO2 meter on the wall in each of your most-used rooms. Outdoor CO2 is currently 425ppm; what you accept indoors is up to you but 1000ppm is where acute poisoning symptoms start so you definitely want to keep it well below that! If you can run all your indoor air needs through your HVAC and never need to open a window, you will drastically reduce the amount of dust entering your home, but be aware all that dust is going into your air filter instead of your house and your family's lungs so the air filter will need regular maintenance.
I had a rental property once. Tenant left so much grease in kitchen that i had to use oven cleaner to get the cabinets clean enough to paint. Replaced the countertops.
I have tried the no shoes in the house but it didn’t work for my family. My husband loves to work outside and he wears lace up shoes. I tried keeping the shoe covers by every door, but no go. Since he is our primary provider, I decided this was one battle I would not fight.
My mom used to tell this story. One time when she was young she was helping my grandma clean and my mom said, I can't get this clean. How do you get this clean? And my grandma said, you have to use elbow grease. My mom said, where is that, under the sink? :-)
My walls have to be cleaned because they are white. I found out dish soap and water are all you need to use along with your sponge or rag. Last Saturday I cleaned the top of my cabinets. They need cleaned more often than I do them.
Due to circumstances, I share house space with 2 people who simply refuse to see the encrusted dirt and filth in the place. I have cleaned the stove and a few other surfaces that I have to use frequently. I have now gotten a couple dash appliances to use in my room. I'm trying to get into low income housing where I will know at least my apartment will be clean. I don't know how people just live in filth.
Oh yes, I endorse the daily wipe round of surfaces. With the kitchen sink, I sprinkle some Vim in it just after doing the dishes, and wipe round with the dish cloth. This removes grease from the sink, and disinfects the dish cloth.
It’s a good thought not to wear shoes in the house. I have to wear shoes all the time because they support my feet. I am 70 years old. They have to lace up , they cannot be slip-on. I will HAVE to make this happen‼️ I am getting new carpet in January. I also have chickens and often have to step in the coop to care for them.
My podiatrist recommended taking off your outdoor shoes and changing to "indoor" sneakers with good support to wear in the house. He said it's better for your feet. You would still have the support you need without bringing outdoor dirt, etc into your home.
Yes it’s hard isn’t it. Slip ons or mules are easy. Sneakers or lace up boots not so much. We come into our laundry room from garage and have no where to put a bench so we have to come into family room to sit and put shoes on and off.
It is an OCD thing. The whole house has stuff that is not good. It is not going to make much difference. The same people who obsess over the outdoor shoes will eat food or take pills that have hit the floor. And do you wash your pet's feet each time you go in and out? But you are right that kitchens put out the most filth, followed closely by your bathroom. And your ceiling fans attract lots of dust daily. Oops, gotta hire a maid to clean daily. And never mind the health articles saying too clean of a house does not build up your immunity. Bye bye

In Germany, too!
In Asian households too.

Learned the clean as you go from FlyLady. “You can do anything for 15 minutes” and “You can’t clean clutter” are life changers. 😊
Thanks for posting on a holiday... that's dedication! Merry Christmas, Taryn!
Merry Christmas to you and yours Jenny!! 🎄❤️
Indoor sneakers were revolutionary for me. I don’t love slippers and I run around a lot in the house, it’s great!
Awesome!
Thank you thank you thank you
"Explosive residue" is fertilizer. Purified nitrates that are in plant fertilizer is an ingredient in a type of explosive.
I'll never understand how one can not take-off their outdoor shoes, especially if they've got wall-to-wall carpets inside 🙀
Thank you for sharing!
I don’t.
Thank you!
Happy holidays! Thank you 😊

Removing shoes when entering a home makes such a huge difference, especially with allergies.
For sure!
I had a rental property once. Tenant left so much grease in kitchen that i had to use oven cleaner to get the cabinets clean enough to paint. Replaced the countertops.
Wow!

Just show them by your example. No need to say anything further. ❤
@ I don’t wear outdoor shoes in the house, and haven’t for years, but I’m not forcing this on my husband!
Maybe try the shoe cover holder, then he can just step into the shoe covers rather than having to put them on by hand.
@@debbiemize2269of course not, poor man😂😂😂
1. Never wear your outdoor shoes inside.
2. @2:25 Do a daily wipe down
3. @4:25 clean as you go
How do you get your (my husband) to remove his shoes when he comes into the house?
He has always done this but it also helps that he did this growing up (like me) and before he met me!
My mom used to tell this story. One time when she was young she was helping my grandma clean and my mom said, I can't get this clean. How do you get this clean? And my grandma said, you have to use elbow grease. My mom said, where is that, under the sink? :-)

We always take our shoes off in the house.
I live in Hawaii, it is disrespectful not to. We always leave our Rubbah Slippahs outside!
👍
I don't know how anyone can function living in filth!! Great tips & Merry Christmas Taryn! 🎄

My wood cabinets need cleaned. Suggestions?
I like either Dawn powerwash, or, some soapy water works wonders on wood cabinets!
I have always left my shoes on in my home. I have a dog in and out of the house. This would be impossible for me to do

I never take my shoes of. Too much work …. All those laces
I have to wear expensive, custom fit, orthopedic shoes. I can't afford a pair to wear only inside.
Too much talk. Just give info
