After doing most trades for 30 yrs stucco is pretty straightforward......not whole lot to it if you have basic bldg skills, physically tho pretty demanding.......its one of the more "forgiving" trades If that makes sense
Greetings Jennifer, if they have rotted out that unusual, however, I have seen this, weep screed are galvanized so that they dont rust. I have seen garages with no wood frame left as the water deteriorated them, it's just stucco holding up a garage. Many of these will still last hundreds of more years just like that, just stucco. You can leave them alone as the stucco will stay in place or break out 6 inches above then replace, you will open a can of worms if this is done so be prepared. Hi Kirk, After an old house has been painter a dozen times , the stucco looks like mission finish. Can you recommend a product for patching prior to painting. The rapid set boxes in the store are 16/20 and too coarse. Always a pleasure to watch you and your crew Kirk. From an old UK Spread and hod carrier. Tim
Happy holidays Tim, yes, you need to buy a cementitious finish product, La Habr sells Santa Barbera smooth mission finish. BMI sells Marble, etc. You want the 30/30 mesh sand, as the medium or 20/30 is too heavy, and, of course, you know that the rapid set is 16/20, which is the course's sand is too heavy or thick also. Not to change subject here but looked at a 100 year old house in Detroit yesterday. Wood plaster lath walls and ceiling have surface cracks all over. Is 1/4” drywall best solution, going over existing? Thanks . I realize gutting is best......
Happy holidays Gary, change the subject, my brother, no worries. My home is a victorian that is 130 years old, with the same wood lath. I recommend you do as I did. Remove any buckling, apply a bonding agent over the wood lath and old plaster. You can skim the wood lath with Diamond veneer basecoat, then skim-coat the complete walls with diamond Veneer finish coat. I did not gut my interior as that would have been counter-productive. The fact is all homes move with rain and time, will some of the cracks re-appear? Of course, as it's not in no man's power to control the earth's movement. Hello Kirk I have another question, the windows on my ready to stucco house have 2" thick x 5" wide foam forms around them, I have stucco netting with rounded corners on all edges I can see this will take some time to do with my scratch coat, my question is can I scratch coat my windows first before I do my wall or does both have to be done at the same time, thanks for your time Kirk I would be happy to send you a check for this and the next 25 question, lol Will.

Hello Kirk, I have a question about interior "plastering" using tape setting compounds like Durabond and Easy Sand by USG. You say to always use Plaster Weld or other bonding agents and you apply that over raw plaster and painted surfaces. My question is if a painted wall is primed with an oil based primer like Kilz Original, would that suffice as a bonding agent for the taping compound? Thanks
Greetings Dude, taping mud does not require a bonding agent, but I have not used taping mud for at least 30 years. All of the fast setting gypsums such as easy sand or any of the veneer plasters do require a bonding agent. Sure many people dont apply bonding agents, I do as I dont want any problems in the future years ahead with separation. Get plastered like stucco Kirk and Jason Giordano’s sound plastering advice

Hey Kirk, got a problem that I could use your opinion on, which is valued. Building Koi pond of CMU. Last coat will be Epoxy paint. After block was finished, painted on Quickcrete bonding agent. Then cement plastered the CMU with mortar cement and sand, but added Bonding agent into the mix! Came off in sheets! So.....chiseled all the cement plaster off, but the bonding agent is still on the CMU in the for of a rubbery thin membrane. What do I do? Grind it all off?......or apply more bonding agent before the next coat of cement plaster??
Sounds like you didn't water-down your bonding agent, your mixture should be 90% water, that's why it fell off. I recommend at least scuffing it with a grinder and applying a watered-down bonding agent.
@@thane1326 Wow! 90% water !! Who knew?? I will grind off the surface with a diamond cup and then acid wash the surface, then neutralize the surface with baking soda wash. A final pressure wash with 2600 psi should be good for just a good mechanical bond. Appreciate the tip.
Happy holidays Moss, no bonding agents should be added to stucco. The popular product, "Sika bonding agent," is used instead of water and more often for tile grout. However, you added a bonding agent into the stucco that was mixing. By adding a bonding agent in the mix instead of painting it on the basecoat or substrate, you render that bonding agent useless. This will not usually affect the stucco's inability to adhere. I believe you tried to stucco over a dusty or dirty wall or didn't have enough suction to the wall before when the new coat is applied. This made for poor adhesion. You must wet the existing basecoat, for the new stucco to adhere correctly. I recommend removing the loose finish, then try a mechanical bond. This is keeping the base coat moist with a water hose before re-finishing. Bringing peace, love, and harmony back to the world of plastering. Why? Good question, glad you asked, if you stop in the middle of a wall, then finish from this point on another day, you will get a cold joint, whats a cold joint in plastering term knowledge, If you apply your finish coat and its a color finish, you will see the line, this is called a cold joint.

Hi Kirk,
After an old house has been painter a dozen times , the stucco looks like mission finish.

Kirk, I am using easy sand 90 minute gypsum compound, so can Kilz original oil primer sealer act as my bonding agent? Thanks

@@mossgoldstien138 That sounds like it'll definitely get the job done. Good luck
Moss Witness never add bonding agents in the cement. That’s why it peeled off.
