  • Stucco around a new window in saw-cut stucco.
    Installing stucco on a newly installed window.
    DIY stucco applications.
    Howdy Folks, all the basic tools we use and recommend on Amazon's website.

    www.GiordanoPl... Jason’s Website.
    Here is the proper way to install a window note; we had to break out the stucco properly,
    • Patching exterior plas... .
    Plastering or applying stucco to a newly installed window that was saw-cut is not actual code, so don't saw-cut it and leave it up to the next guy to fix it.
    Instead, break out the perimeter stucco using a rotary hammer, thus salvaging the paper and wire for correct tie-ins. I used your everyday stucco; however, I added Lumnite as an accelerator to set it in minutes instead of hours.
    It’s easy for a window company to install their new windows if they say to cut the stucco.
    However, this leads to a hairline crack around the perimeter.
    Plus, the blade will often slice through the waterproof membrane, which is not good.
    So, how do you stucco a replacement window? Easy, it’s all here in this easy-to-understand video.
    You install new windows around your home and break them out properly;
    Thus no need to worry about leaking or hairline cracks.
    It’s best to break out the perimeter with an electric or battery-operated rotary hammer with a half-inch bit, as in the below video.
    In this quick how-to video, I’m improvising. I told the homeowner I would apply a bonding agent and the perimeter but could not guarantee a hairline wouldn’t form the edge where the saw cut in the stucco was done.
    I doubled up the bonding agent’s full strength around the opening and the inner saw coat and added extra wire to prevent any hairlines from happening.

    It's definitely an art...I enjoy the observations of technique and finish when you are matching styles, very interesting......I have a client who actually wants the stucco cut away from her window to build a wood frame around it to match the frames around her other windows.....it would be a similar gap to what you filled in here.....Not sure why she wants to do it, but that's how it is I guess.....

    • @StuccoPlastering
      @StuccoPlastering  9 лет назад

      kjv-study Hello KJV-study dude, If it were me I would leave the stucco alone as this cutting will compromise the paper membrane under the stucco, thus, creating a leak.
      I would simply use wood that can be saw cut and placed over the existing stucco, no worries about leaking stucco this way.
      Best wishes,
      kirk giordano plastering

    • @kjv-study2685
      @kjv-study2685 9 лет назад

      cool thanks for the advice, I was able to advise against it for now, but the idea is still in the clients mind, she really wants to do it...I assumed that I would probably have to put some new paper in and really caulk the heck out of everything.....I don't want to do it though, as the current stucco is intact.....The window is under a pretty large eve, so it's not getting constant water on it when it rains....The only problem with just putting the facade over the stucco is that the stucco makes a beveled edge off the window, so you can't bring the wood up the the edge of the window properly. I suppose we could bust the stucco out properly so there are keys and then re-stucco the busted out area up to the new window frame. Still I really didn't like the idea of compromising good stucco just to have a small aesthetic change made...By the way I have really enjoyed your videos, the art and industry of it is very interesting, and I really enjoy watching y'all work.....much appreciated....

      Morning Study Dude, go with your instincts, if your subconscious is saying don't do it, you are foreseeing your future lawsuit,
      no joke.
      I don't compromise my gut instincts anymore. They will conveniently forget your strong opposition to this foolish task or will sell the home therefore you are still liable when it fail.
      You can also get them to sign a disclosure, now you have to keep this burden or letter in your desk for the next 10 years, your call.
      BTW, a number of years ago, being a real nice fella as the homeowners had to have their desires met, my insurance paid out 70,000 dollars.

I retired recently, but my specialty was on site carpet dying and repair and I agree with you 100%, if you have real doubts or concerns, don't do the job. I always gave my customers an honest opinion if a carpet can be saved or needs to be replaced. Even with a few jobs I turned down now and then I still had plenty of work. Hey Kirk great vids!!
    Just wondering if you could do a video on how well you clean your tools. In most of your videos you say how the 20 minute muds and the concrete based muds where you use the accelerators if the tools/buckets are dirty the drying time is exponentially shortened.
    I'm pretty anal about cleaning my tools but I think a vid on that would really help the diy'er or the carpenter who is trying to spackle like me.
    Thanks again

    Hi Kirk, I definately agree about covering the windows and doors, as you say, it saves you a ton of time later and the man that thinks he is faster than you is talking out of his glutimus maximus, in fact I reckon that you two should have a contest with the loser having to run around the nearest town in his underpants.
    I'm not sure I actually like the skip trowel look, it reminds me of 1970's artex, but having said that here in the UK many homes have the pebble dash look which many folks also cannot stand. One thing that does look great on homes is pargetting, ie, designs in the render by freehand or else a design carved into a wood block and then this is stamped into the green mortar.
    I did a short course on the subject with an excellent craftsman called Bill Sargent, he is a real expert in his work and I think a little pargetting work can add a bit of extra value to a home especially a small feature over a window or door top.

    Excellent demonstration. I have been dreading the day I will need to replace my aluminum frame windows, but this video may give me courage to tackle it. I have a sand finish, so it might be a bit harder to camouflage than with a rougher texture. Should a do straight cut or make it jagged? I suspect an elastomeric finish will cover any hairline crafts should they develop. Thanks again.

    Hey Kirk,
    Been down a window/patio door rabbit hole lately. All these nail fin windows provide somewhere for the stucco to butt into at the window - simple.
    I see some big aluminum doors, bifold, etc (fancy) where the stucco is at a clean 90 degree off a flat frame. So the wall is offset (proud) a stucco thickness from the flat window frame. There is no flange the stucco butts into. So I see it has to make a 90 degree to join the face of the window/door. A bit like a J trim. How do you guys do that? Do you use a cheater bar, a Jig, or something to get a clean 90 degree edge on top of a flat flange?
    That sounds confusing but without image it's best I can describe. Would love to see more industrial windows and door set up on here if you guyts do em!

    • @StuccoPlastering
      @StuccoPlastering  7 месяцев назад

      Good morning, we don't do anything when we have that situation. To see the J-Trim one-eith-inch return is not a bad thing. I see all kinds of flanges or trims, that are not noticed by the average person. As long as they are functional and necessary. No big deal. In fact, the video we are uploading today shows a window that installed cockeyed, we had to put a heavy texture just to blend it in. Cheers.

    Kirk. Show us please how you tape that plastic to the window. It looks as if you taped a square of plastic to the window. That looks time consuming. But, maybe not. Painters use a hand Masker that rolls out a spool of plastic and tape together: as the plastic comes out, so does the tape.

    • @StuccoPlastering
      @StuccoPlastering  8 лет назад

      Howdy Spencer, as a rule I prefer a vinyl tape as it adheres better, yes it sometimes pulls the paint off, but that's the nature of covering windows.
      The interior blue tape is great also but will not adhere throughout the evening, this is why I keep a large stock of Vinyl tape on my truck.

    • @StuccoPlastering

      Hello Esther, you would have to add more wire, its best to chisel or break out a little bit of existing stucco netting also to avoid a perimeter hairline crack to. Its best but up to you, if you dont break out some of the original, you may end up with a crack, this crack can be caulked with Mor-Flexx caulking if you choose to go that route🤔

    so like in this case... it's fine as there's a large overhang, but if there was a ton of water raining down pouring on top of the stucco above the window here... is there any flashing? like where would water that gets behind the stucco escape above this window?

    • @StuccoPlastering
      @StuccoPlastering  Год назад +3

      Hi Phil, One has to do the best possible with what they have to work with. To fuse the window frame to the paper and flashing is the absolute best, especially if Sikaflex 1A caulking is used. I prefer all folks add a metal z-flash on the tops of windows. However, we do the best we know how when seeing how the contractors left the windows. I have walked off my share of jobs where windows were installed pitifully. 🤔

    Do you ever put brick molding around the window after it is cut.

      RC unleashed Hi RC, I just do the stucco work, however many contractors do install this trim prior to my application of stucco.
      Best wishes,

      Evening Spencer, the first coat of stucco is called a scratch coat the second coat is called the brown coat,
      Can Ol Kirk apply just a single coat instead of two?
      You betcha.
      Will this one coat be as strong as two as long as it's the same depth?
      great question, glad you again, again, you betcha.
      best wishes,

    Hi Kirk, We own a 30 year old stucco exterior home. We are replacing windows and want the best possible seal. Planning on new construction, vs retro. Is this the right decision? Thank you. Your videos are super helpful!

      Good Morning Darren Dude, yes as retrofits rely on caulking instead of proper lathing.
      I have been called many times to correct retrofits when or if the caulking fails

      @@Lawless187indika Howdy Good question, that's when they remove a window and insert a new one without breaking out the existing ones. Retrofits last as long as caulking does. Not long.🍾
