I love that you made this video. This game is so strategy heavy that I didnt know where to start. This should be way more popular. Great vid.

Thank you for the video. Finally a video about strategy instead of a "how to", a runthrough or a review. Those are nice, but videos with strategy are rare.

Thanks Ray. Only played one game so far, but your tips seem to make sense. I found the sound fine listening on headphones.

Time to come back and make more of these. Teotihuacan maybe? Clans of Caledonia? Underwater Cities?

I was able to win recently playing an unorthodoxed game. My opponent was out producing me, but I was generating more doubloons, so I out built him. I was able to buy 10 buildings and fill my board, while he was forced to skip buying 4 times allowing me to make up the difference in victory points he had gotten from shipping to win the game.

Thanks for the comment! I think your group probably ends a lot of games through building instead of VP depletion, needs a lot of doubloons, and focuses on trading expensive goods for income. That is why I put economize at #3 above blocking out ships (Besides coffee is just an example, it can be done with any good.) I would still recommend that the 1 time out of 100 you don't trade it you block out a ship...

    "Producing *rice*"?
    What?

  • @rayreviewsgames

Even if it's a measly 1 (or 2 if captain) VP, it will potentially cost the other players a lot more if they can't ship their own goods. As always, different tactics are going to apply to different situations and different player styles. Reading your comment made me want to play again, so I immediately did. Let me know if you're ever up for a game on boardgamearena. com. Whether shipping dominance or fast building is better is a fun debate.

3 of us just played for the first time tonight, 3 games. My winning strategy in game 3 was to man 4 corns and start shipping 5 VP at a time. Now how do I get the game to end quickly before the other players' crap starts producing for them? Buy the 3 slot mills whose empty slots deplete the settlers fast. Unsuspecting, on another player's mayor card, I moved my settlers off the top to the lower plantations opening a huge number of needed settlers ending the game by surprise. (17 settlers)

Nice Move. It always good to end a game on your terms when others don't expect it.

Didn't know you could move the settlers around the plantations. Good tip 👍

Very important is the turn before you get the red governor card.

Sorry about the sound, I'll work on improving it in the future. What makes it hard to hear? Is it too quiet, there too much static, or am I talking too fast?

    From the rules:
"Note: In the captain phase, EACH PLAYER MAY GET SEVERAL TURNS TO LOAD GOODS ON THE CARGO SHIPS. When it is a player’s turn to load goods on a cargo ship, he must load if he can.
However, a player may load goods of only one kind on a turn.
The captain phase CONTINUES, clockwise around the table, AS LONG AS at least one player has goods he can load."
I think my next video will need to be How to Play Puerto Rico. :)

My apologies, you're right. I've never played that way though and it looks like I've been playing incorrectly this entire time. I've always played that each player has one shot to load as much of one good onto a ship as they can. I'll have to go over my rules at home and see if this is clear.

No it keeps going round and round until no one can play anything more. In fact you must ship even if you do not want to. Say you had saved coffee to trade but there was a coffee or empty ship you must ship if possible.
An example: 3 empty ships so I place two white on ship 1
player 2 places 3 yellow on ship 2
player 3 places 2 white on ship 1
back to you and say you have 2 coffee you would have to load them onto ship 3.
      then to player 2 etc.

Its too quiet. I think you're too far from the mic.

Yeah historically. Every few rounds, brown dudes arrive on a boat and work on plantations or in the city. This allows the player to make cash money and earn reputation in the form of victory points. Sounds like Puerto Rico in a nutshell haha.
Great game. It could have been themed as any island but Puerto Rico just gives it a theme that sounds exotic while still approachable for Americans.

@@FSCB2013 Americans? It’s a German game made when the American audience was not very large.

While generally good advice, I completely disagree with tip #4. If I am the only person producing coffee, there's no way in hell I'm going to want to plop it onto a ship just to block it. I'm going to want to trade it 99 times out of 100. In fact, if given the chance, the other players will probably pick captain to force me to ship my coffee so I only get 1 measly vp for it.

in the first half of the game you want to trade it in the second half put it on the big ship and hopefully have a harbour as well. Shipping some of the good does not prohibit all trading also (if you trade first).

  • @bigworm5024

Securing the harbor increases your chance to win by at least 999%

wait what? what's this talk about shipping goods on multiple ships? you're only allowed to ship ONE KIND of goods. You can't ship goods on 3 different ships.
