I miss Scott! He got me into the hobby and got me excited about it over ten years ago. Thanks Scott! Your earlier videos changed my life for the better by bringing this awesome hobby to me, my friends and family and I have since spread it to many people as well.
Thanks so much, Scott! A friend brought over a copy of Puerto Rico, and he didn't even know how to play it. After almost an hour of being confused and having no idea where to begin, your video saved us!
This is the very best instructional video I have ever seen!!! Extremely well organized to take you from “the big picture” to the details and even some helpful tips for new players! Fantastic job!!!
Scott this is by far the best breakdown of how to play the game. My only complaint is I found your video last. I have been intimidated to teach people how to play until now. You have some very lucky students I'm sure.
Great review, and you're absolutely right about explaining the GOAL first. A lot of reviewers (surprisingly) do not understand this, and it forces the viewer to watch the video several times before they even understand any of it.
Scott, you really do a fantastic job of not only explaining the rules and flow of games but also a great job through your explaining about whether or not I'd be interested in any game you're talking about. Excellent work, my friend - please keep it up!
Just bought it last week, glad I did! I downloaded the 2 player rules and played it 5 times this week. Had a game night last night with 5 people, and was hesitant to teach the game to them after we had played Catan because it just looked so complicated and I didn't know if they'd like it. Well, luckily I had nothing to worry about. They caught on near the end of the game, and now they want to play it again. It's just a fun game! Less cut-throat than Catan too.
Good tips at the end. One thing about the fast building strategy is to take quarries as quickly as possible, for the cost reduction allows you to then build faster than other players.
Hey, Scott! I've stumbled upon your channel not too long ago, and I've enjoyed videos you make a lot! I like that you present board games in very clear and analytical way and yet manage to keep it easy to watch and entertaining. I've also noticed that you haven't posted this kind of board game reviews for quite a while - are you done with it? If not, I'd like to see more of them. You've mentioned San Juan in this video, but didn't mention Race for the Galaxy which is probably more famous game and I would like to see your review on it - it should be just as interesting. In any case, thank you for your videos, it was a pleasure to watch!
Good luck on finding people to play with! I bought PR not knowing if anyone else would like it. Luckily, a couple friends play Settlers of Catan, and they liked PR. You could look for gaming groups in your area too.
Great review. I purchased the ios game as it has a pretty decent built in tutorial but this filled in all the gaps. Now I'm ready to buy the real deal. Thanks!
Wow I'm usually turned off by a game solely centered on Victory points. I like the racing, dexterity, or travel around the board stuff. But this is amazing. I've always liked complex games, but not ones that have a perfect rhythm turn-for-turn with a bunch of phases or steps. This is genius and realistic to a real Puerto Rico. I wanna give a applause to the guy who actually made this game. This took serious thot and changes i'll bet. Looks GREaT! good review too. Thank you.
Great video, I'd have a hard time explaining this. It seems to have a lot of depth but not brain-melting like Twilight Imperium. I might get it, the only problem would be finding others to play with.
I'd really like to try this game. I've just begun to get into board games that aren't 'mainstream' I suppose you could say. I'm afraid that I wont be able to find people to play with though...
What would be a good way to make this game a bit easier (less overwhelming) in the first play for beginners? I was thinking of not considering the special functions of buildings. Another option would be to take out the captain, and only get points by building. Any thoughts?
Agricola is dense. Both use wooden and cardboard pieces, but Agricola is more expensive because it has larger wooden pieces, more of them, and many cards. Both games are very durable due to the wood and thick cardboard, so the added price (from what i can tell owning both) is only that Agricola has more and larger pieces. Both games are excellent (Puerto Rico is my favorite) but if you're a serious gamer you will like both.
Can anyone comment on what game has more value, Puerto Rico or Agricola? In terms of replayablity, parts, etc. The latter costs around $20 more, so I'm wondering if it's because it's better in quality of parts or something.
You know what is a hilarious irony? I am a Puerto Rican and this game is NOT sold in Puerto Rico and it is neither available in Spanish. Anyhow I'll be buying this really soon over Ebay or somewhere else, I am amazed at the strategic gameplay it seems to possess. It far surpasses the crap we have over in America; like Stratego and Risk. lol !!!
You suck Scott. You 'forced' me to subscribe your wonderful channel.. :) Thanks for the very detailed and yet not tedious explanation and the extra tips! Hope you don't mind I Liked this... :P and I'm glad I watched til ... wait, nevermind... nothing to look here folks...
I never like Puerto Rico. Don't know why. It's not that I don't like heavy-thinking games - Agricola is one of my top favourites. And it's not the theme - I mean, I do feel that this whole growing-selling-shipping theme, represented by bits of cardboard, is a bit dry, but I enjoy chess, and that's totally abstract. So don't know - just don't like it.

Still the best How to play Puerto Rico on RUclips in 2022

Thank you SO much for this video and the enthusiasm for the game! Yours should be the most popular.

Without a doubt, the best rules explaination for Puerto Rico on RUclips. Thank you for this video!

Thanks a lot for this video, Scott! This was a fantastic overview and everything was very well presented.
Excellent review of an excellent game.
Great job of describing the game and the game play.
Great resource for choosing a modern game.. Thanks for taking the time to do it.
Good tips at the end. One thing about the fast building strategy is to take quarries as quickly as possible, for the cost reduction allows you to then build faster than other players.
Got to congratulate you on managing to simplify even the most complex gaming instructions, thanks
Thanks for the video, Scott! Really enjoyed it and our group will be trying PR out tomorrow for the first time.
Awesome!!! I really enjoyed your explanation of the game. I was thinking about getting the game. Now I'm definitely going to buy it!
Great video really helped me out. Thanks Scott.
Awesome review!!! Thanks, I'm sold!
very good and detailed review of the game :D as well as the guide for the game as well, nicely done mate 5/5!
Recently bought this game because of your review ^^ It's going to be interesting to play it in a couple of days.

Well done. Thank you for such an excellent review!
Awesome review. Thanks for you great work.
Great video!
Thanks, my friends and I are looking at playing our second game this week. We got the captain phase completely wrong the first time.
Great review!!
Good luck on finding people to play with! I bought PR not knowing if anyone else would like it. Luckily, a couple friends play Settlers of Catan, and they liked PR. You could look for gaming groups in your area too.
Thanks for the tutorial, this game overwhelmed me a bit when I tried reading the manual.
Amazing review. Thank you.
Thanks Scott.

I love this man, get on the PR express!
Very nice & helpfull.
I meet every week with some friends to play PR. As a fun strategy game, it's second to none.
what a great game. I lose everytime, but I have fun everytime.

@ahtartersauce101 I completely agree. A brilliantly designed game.
Construction Hut is awesome in larger games.
whoa this was 15 years ago???

I was thinking of not considering the special functions of buildings.

Great game! Thanks for the video! What is your opinion on the expansion?
This was very helpfull, thanks
@jgarcia0417 I tried it, but I don't think the game needs it. I find that there's enough variety and interest in the base game.
The roles in this look like they play almost exactly like the Strategy cards in Twilight Imperium 3.
Agricola is dense. Both use wooden and cardboard pieces, but Agricola is more expensive because it has larger wooden pieces, more of them, and many cards. Try Munchkin Quest. I think you'll be quite happy with it. I think it meets all of your criteria.

@theelephantgun you mean wharf?
Hey Scott, thanks for the video! Is there a higher quality upload of this video anywhere? Thanks.
heh, this video was filmed in 2009, so this is as high quality as it gets for home video at the time!
4:40 to skip some extra stuff and get straight to the "how to play" stuff
@noircei16 The one game I can think of that meets these criteria is Glory to Rome. It's not as strong in the comedy department.
@Darklordbrink I played once with one with trees. I didn't care for it, so I stick to the base game.

The factory strategy: get a factory.
@noircei16 Cosmic Encounter. Abstract. Strategy. Very light, but not guillotine light. Infinite number of play possibilities without any expansions.
Excellent, patient, informed style, unlike some of the more hyper, annoying coaches on here.
How long does a game last for, lets say, 4 persons?
Dont worry, i finally found out!
Me and my family tried and we did almost everything WRONG! Lol
I ordered this game off of Amazon..... I'M FUCKING JUICED lol

If you play a good game with annoying people you're going to have a bad time mmmkay?
