I think it's interesting that Mae's journal entry for the Janitor includes that she might actually enjoy being a janitor herself. A passing of the torch perhaps?

This is my personal headcanon as well except for the fact that mae is already the same type of entity and fully self-aware in the game but just doesn't realize it is a game mae just think that everything feels fake doesn't that sound like someone who is self-aware it can have two meeting's: an allegory to disassocia or a character being self-aware but why can't it be both and all honesty someone being self-aware and someone being disassociative could be viewed as the same thing but one is not the other. Not all disassociative characters in fiction are self-aware but all self aware people in fiction are disassociative I may be wrong I may be but always something to think about as a possibility

The Grandma was referencing how Mae beat the shit out of that kid with a baseball bat when she was a kid. The Grandma said "A bat in your hand" and "Red shapes on the grass" The red shapes on the grass was talked about before when talking to Bea or Gregg on the couch when they were talking about why she beat up the kid.

Now that you have mentioned about the birds having wisdom in the game, it is really surprising that the game didn't reference "canaries in the coal mine." It is the idea of how miners would put birds in the coal mines to see if the gases were toxic or not. Even though the birds aren't canaries, it would be likely that this would be the reason why there are no canaries and well bird characters having the wisdom.

Yeah, I think Mae was suffering from some deep, troubling depression, and disassociation. They also mention the town doctor isn't very good, he's a fill in for all types of work, and she probably never got the actual help she needed after her break down, leading to her coming back to town.
My theory is that there may be no, or little, super natural stuff going on. The cult is far more... sad in that way, a cabal of old men throwing people down a well, committing to murder out of superstition and false hope that magic will bring the town the prosperity it needs. People do irrational things when they're desperate, and sometimes the next generation will just follow what they've been told about those irrational things.
I think Mae facing the Black Goat had more to do with her facing her inner demons, like you said, but I think while she is fighting depression and a slew of mental problems, I think the biggest thing she battling is the concept of entropy. She's dealing with a big picture, her town, her friends, her house, even herself will all not exist one day, and since the town is dying, and she's depressed, she's staring at the heat death of the universe and thinking more about than anyone can really handle like that. She even mentions in her dream that everything was gone, Possum Springs didn't even exist anymore, but she had some acceptance, and thought she could rebuild.

    • @MeTheMeZ
      @MeTheMeZ 7 лет назад +12

That is a thing, it's not a perfect theory.
The only time I really remember it actually happening was the fence at the edge of town, the cult only mentions there were rumors one of their own could do it. I don't think it's too crazy to imagine with how long they'd lived there he knew a more mundane way through the fence, like a hidden hole, that Mae didn't. After all they've been doing this a while, and I can see them making a secret way through the fence to make their sacrificing faster.

I did have a thought on the bugs, and her nightmares, forgot to write it down! So, I don't dream much, or have many nightmares, but the times I have the most vivid, and often nightmares, is when I'm running a fever, or under extreme stress from life, and I actually think Mae might be both. She passes through the forest on her way back into town, and she goes to a party deep in the woods. You know what the bugs kind of look like to me, ticks. I think she may have picked up a tick early in the game, began running a fever from something she caught from it, and mixed with her daily stress, lead to her have trippy nightmares about things she's struggling with.

I realized that Mae is really determined. I mean even after everything that has happened she still pushes forward. She still continues on even after the incident that has occured. Even after hurting Andy she still continues on with life. And she does because of her friends' support. If you actually think about it the game focuses on real-life problems people face everyday. Mae has gone through a face in her life when her life just shatters in front of her. Just like what this video had, Mae tried her hardest to fight her inner demons. Some people are afraid of doing that. But Mae shows that it won't let her down. Mae is a hero, even if we don't realize it.

One note about the gas theory, while I don't necessarily prefer that one, it's likely Mae would be more heavily affected. It's mentioned twice that she's a lightweight when it comes to any kind of substances, mentioning that she often gets woozy from cough medicine and Bea commenting how it only took 2 or 3 watered-down beers to make her drunk enough to puke. It's a fair assumption that if the gas theory is true, she's going to be the one going craziest because of it.

It's REALLY uncanny how similar Mae and me are when it comes to things in life. Being a college drop out, 20 years old, messing up a lot, bottling things up, self doubt, possibly losing grip on reality itself, close friends basically being the only outlet of happiness. Minus the whole celestial/elder God cult thing. I never thought I'd connect to a cat in video game....even more than things in real life. I'm not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing, oh well. Really love how deep you analyzed this game. I think Night In The Woods tries to leave everything open to interpretation, but I think it tends to point the player in the direction of accepting the supernatural aspects as true; it seems unlikely that everyone is participating in the exact same delusion due to the gas leaks, but I suppose it's not out of the question. You do make an interesting point that our perspective of the events could be tainted as well, as we are experiencing the world through Mae's eyes.

It would very much seem that the player is meant to have their own perception of what's going on. At least that's the way I like to look at it. Whether you think Mae's dreams, and the cult's beliefs are real, or think it's all part of mental illness, and delusions from hard times, -you- the player are meant to have your own perception on what's going on.
And true, there is stuff happening that you don't know of, like the janitor (which I really like this theory for him btw,) but I don't think there is one answer, either that, or I think the answer isn't meant to be fully understood.
People do suffer from this kind of stuff, whether you refer to it as mental illness or whatever. And this game does a great job of helping you see things from their perspective.

Scams isn't a cat, If you look A. He has the mask on as he's falling with the shaft. and B. In a trailer you see him in a 360 and he has teeth like Bea and other lizard like ideas. So it's possible this is actually the old man who seems to hate you, There is also some proof of this. When your at Harfest he seems to be watching you, He looks up as you look by. Now you may say that "He's just a grumpy old dude" but it's possible he was acting like he was senile as a cover. he also is in the church with you possibly to make sure you don't die pre-sacrafise. And also when Germs grandmother is talking it's more likely she is talking about when she was beating that kid with a bat as she talks about how Mae only saw shapes "Red Shapes" as Mae says to gregg. Another odd thing is that she also talks about how her or her father or her grandparents did something dark in their past. In your grandfather's safe there is a tooth. One of the newspapers talks about how there was a group of people who used teeth as almost like a right of passage. This is just some stuff off of my head and I'm not even done with playrhthough 2. Anyways hope this is of help.

I believe the person in the original trailer is just one of the cultists. In the game files it shows Eide's head as a cat. However, the graphic is solid black so you can't see anything but his outlines. It's very clear it is a cat though, and the file name has the words "true head" in it.

      @thebombplays8537 7 лет назад +4

SwankyBox Ah, Sadly I can only go off of what I remember from my first playthrough. Personally I think either way his true identity in the end doesn't matter much mainly because it won't change much. If we do know him he's a minor character if we don't then that would be worse. Shame that there isn't much about it because it would have been awesome if they actually sort of attempted to make a reason to look for his identity. I honestly hope they expand the story with DLC someday but it seems unlikely.

My Theory: We do look through Mae's best friend after she is injured, so we, the player might be the janitor and know that Mae is experiencing the truth. The hole, the rift left in her soul caused by depression, gave the black goat a chance to break her down. (i.e. "We only recruit worthless members to society")Try to convince her to join him, with the other cultists.
Problems with your theory (as far as I can tell):
Poison gas affects everyone differently, also could be a blame made by the media.
Her friends were with her the entire time with the cultists.
The janitor might be reincarnated as the statue

One I feel shows just how deeply shes pained is when Bea drives her home. When she cries, at first it was the typical "im too drunk" cry, but soon shes bawling her eyes out, and not in a pretty way. What Bea said hurt her a lot more than she lets on

Just like at the end, the woods aren't the complete end, just like the complete start. After he fixes the door at Mae's old house, everything goes back to normal.

I think that within the story itself, it all has to do with supernatural stuff and lore and all that, which will be incredibly difficult but incredibly fun to figure out, but I also think that all the fantastical events that happened during the course of the game are put there as a more physical way to show the emotional journey that Mae is going through. Basically one of my favorite ways to tell stories: Awesome lore and stuff that also doubles as a metaphor for the more human version of the character's journey.

I have this weird connection between things I'm trying to establish in this game. We see animals, we see humanoid animals, and we encounter animal 'gods' through Adina and Mae. I have to guess that these animals into the 'humans' we see. Meanwhile, these gods, whether cosmic aliens or metaphorical, seem to be able to 'die' and transform, seen with the forest god and 'janitor'. It seems also that 'humans' can become the gods, or perhaps all these gods were 'humans' stuck in animal forms after death. One example is Ibon becoming the Black Goat, and the other is Corbin the cat thief becoming the supernatural cat we see in 'Lost Constellation', maybe even the cat god we encounter is Mae's dream.

Her cryptic speech, the way she kept warning Mae, saying how "being in the wrong place at the right time" could be bad, and turning up after the cultist kidnapped that kid and passed through the fence. As if she was watching out. And Mae and the groups first seeing the cult where she falls after nearly getting shot is her being at the wrong place and the right time. There are quite a few members of the town you notice go missing, typically towns people who look like they are workers/laborers, which the cultists are implied to be. Ah I love this game.

Oof... Hearing you talk about the depression thing hit me pretty hard...
Because I also have a similar kind of depression.
But my theory isn't much of a "theory" but more of an explanation.
When she was playing that game, and the computer broke, that caused her depression. She lost something that she had grown so close to. And to see it turn into nothing but shapes and colors led her to believe that everything she once known and loved will end up that way, too. She couldn't handle the pressure of losing everything, so she distanced herself from reality.

My part of a theory involving Mae: Definitely depressed or having a mental illness of some sort, each certain demon/alien animals represent her and the ones who are close to her. Bear, representing Angus, Squirrel representing (I think Gregg?), Crocodile, which is Bea, and the Cat, Mae. Some mental illnesses are said to somewhat 'predict' futures, or as a type of Deja Vu thing happening inside of her dreams. Well.... either a mental illness of some sort... or she was born as a part of omnipotent higher being, or at least part, anyway. As her life is obviously not normal based off of the circumstances, such as the Janitor, which may be a type of god, choosing to monitor Mae throughout her endeavors. Mae also had a random day where she just.. Snapped, and saw everything as shapes and calculations and lines, this may be a part where she had been enlightened, seen whichever dimension she lives in, such as a 4th dimensional being looking down o a 3rd dimension. I don't exactly have time, or the memory to type everything out. Please remember this is only part of my theory.

I always thought the janitor was a guardian spirit that watches over the town.
Also he and Germ's family could possibly be color variants of grackles or some form of corvids (crows, ravens, jackdaws, etc) which are considered spiritual animals who often are associated with the dead and spirituality.
The birds in Possum Springs may be seen as such, and if so, then that explains why the birds seem so spiritually inclined and involved in the town.

I think I’d like the game better if the whole thing was created by her depression and her friends went along with it to help her because that’s what the story should be about. Not about demons, aliens or gods, but about mental illness and it’s affect on life. That would make the game so much better in my eyes. The game would feel so real and emotional.

Death of the author is an important phenomenon to understand when interpreting hidden information in a plot. Specifically, the creators said that the cut content revolving Germ's grandma is not canon, therefor it cannot be canon. By adding cut content to the official plot it can make other elements that did make the final cut less consistent. Sometimes things are cut for a reason and the surviving bits are shaped to function without the cuts. This is why Undertale theories have such a labyrinth of unexplainable bologna: people keep trying to cram in plot tokens that no longer fit the big picture.

If the Janitor were a god, I feel like he'd be more of a Janus-esque god. This Roman god was the god of doorways. Doorways between the future, the past, etc. Mae mentions that the future may be happening or may have already happened, the exact representation of Janus. This would also make sense for the Janitor's appearance now. He has gone through the door to the future. He now is older. And he is also fixing doors, which a god of doorways would do if the separation became intact.

  • @fennecboo

    Nice video, decent analysis.
There is a level of evidence that this may be a product of Mae experiencing psychosis alongside coincidence of the organization working inside of Possum Springs. She is showing possibilities of either a mood or personality disorder; something along the lines of bipolar disorder or even schizotypal personality disorder. Stress may have led to tripping off a manic phase thus leading Mae to withdraw from college and increase her bizarre train of thoughts. There may be some hints to this issue being hereditary. We as the player see these hints in the interactions with Mae's mother. During the day in which her mother is going over bills, Mae reveals that her mother is often seen as moody, suggesting there may be some genetic predisposition to her developing a mood disorder.
This does not fully explain a lot of her early onset symptoms, as it seems that she has consistently had trouble making connections with others in possum springs. Her issues may arise from an ongoing sense of social isolation; her idiosyncratic behavior perhaps caused a rift between her and the people of the town. Her behaviors are bizarre and her beliefs are a tad strange, but she was stable until she drove off to college because her friend group offered her a sense of solidarity. When she left off to school she lost this support. When she entered college Mae started experiencing schizophrenic like symptoms, perhaps due to stress and a lack of support.
There is a lot of detail in NiTWs to be able to give rich speculation. It could all be real as well; maybe the line on her mother's side has some connection to the other side? Candy, Mae, and Molly all have the same "nightmare eyes" she goes on about at the fire. Molly does show some hesitancy when she first sees the arm, maybe she is a little more knowledgeable about the deeper secrets of Possum Springs.

Now here is something interesting, all of mae's friends by sheer clues from dialouge say that this is all gonna fall apart, meaning that gregg and angus are going to leave and bea is unsure about here future. Along with her parents and about the house, she feels that her memories are going to die! She came back because she had to put the memories back together or make them keep holding on. She is battling against her friends, family, memories, and even herself to keep it together. She feels that if her childhood isnt kept together then her life means nothing. Mae knows its a loosing fight but she wont let herself belive that. Her childhood was falling apart because somewhere in her mind (during college) that casey was gone. But what if i told you that CASEY AND MAE ARE THE SAME PERSON OR A SYNCRANIZED BODY! weird but i need more time to explain look under this comment for more...

For more clarification, weird autumn mentions something really specific "Sometimes you can't see someone Until they're goooooone" this is almost a direct refrence to when gregg says at the end of the game, do notice anyone missing today. this is also in a relation to casey aswel in the part "Her family drove her awaaaay" meaning that casey left because his family drove him away.
Or.... Mae could have already known since Junior high her childhood was falling apart and HER parents drove her away causing for a bigger meltdown. any way thats all i got GREGG RULZ OK?

Also you may of missed how the bird lady pastor mentioning God is in this church and not long the janitor walks in, which is part of why I think the janitor maybe either said God or a being associated to.
Ive noticed it myself in Ratchet and Clank and have basically more or less called the Plumber God, as mythologies of the past are full of situations where gods who appear on Earth not as great kings or lords but rather as humble positions. It also is effective too, cause while we go day by day through our lives, we never often consider the people who work tirelessly to make sure the world around us is maintained so we can, hence, why God characters in media tend to be Janitors or Plumbers.

  • @fandomsnstuff3860

I think the janitor went through the same situation as Mae, he found the black goat and the cult but moved on with life. remember they chose people who don't have a future and meaning in life? well I don't mean rude but he is a janitor at an old age but still remains positive throughout the game. The black goat could still be singing and calling out to him as well as Mae at the same time making their connection.

With the thing about depression, I suffer from depression too but I think it should be noted the difference between mood disorders (mental illnesses that sabotage emotions) and psychotic disorders (mental illnesses that sabotage perception of reality). Depression, a mood disorder, doesn't usually cause dissociation as it's a symptom of a psychotic disorder. But looking into things I think I found a diagnosis for Mae. Schizoaffective Disorder.
The umbrella term of a disorder when one has both psychosis and a mood disorder like bipolar or depression. I think bipolar disorder would fit Mae, as technically it does have symptoms of depression but also includes mania, including fits of anger. Remind you of anything? Like Dr. Hank telling her that she had anger issues? This would tie into her dissociation and hallucinations as well. I hope this helps and makes sense!
