I see a lot of "Not a Car" comments. But, I played this game and yes, you should play it. This game actually helped me understand previous generations views and why they are so different from my generation. It helps to understand.
I love this comment. Something interactive stories and video games can do so well that a lot of other creative genres can't as easily is to potentially create a sense of empathy for the character you're controlling who may not necessarily come from the same background or generation you do!
The ending of the game is SUPPOSED to be that way. It's not "rushed", it's purposefully non-resolutive. The fact it doesn't resolve all of the characters troubles is explicitly part of the game's thematics, (1) about how there are no magic long-term solutions to life's problems, and (2) how you can't try to bring back the past or lock the present in stasis, you can only try to make the best of whatever comes in future.
I think an ending that resolved all the issues would _also_ be questionable for the reasons you've stated and I don't think that's what RegularCars is trying to argue. The current ending doesn't even discuss any of the characters' futures which makes it feel much more like an abrupt stop than any kind of conclusion. Nobody thinks the ending should have magically fixed the characters' problems but some kind of final comment on them or implication of how the characters tried to deal with their problems would have been much nicer than a random murder subplot.
@@sprazz8668 contradiction: if you played bea's route, she predicts that gregg and angus breaks up. If you played gregg's route, and had that convo with both of them in the mall, you find that while their relationship is not perfect, theyre still determined to make it work. And it didnt really feel like the murder subplot was random. That criticism feels like it came from the unfair prescriptive view that all stories need to have a clean ending
On one hand, *NOT A CARRRRRRRRRRRR*; on the other hand, holy fuck Mr. Regular doing essays on video games?? I'd watch the shit outta this, please do more.
I don't watch car videos but I do love me some story analysis. And I think this is really great although I disagree with you about the ending. I think it fits the story perfectly. "yknow, something big did happen. and I feel like I should have woken up today, and like, have learned something. but I don't know if I learned anything, really." "weeeell, in my experience the big things don't teach you anything. but they make you something. and sometimes you gotta wait a while and see what come of it." -Mae and the Janitor in the epilogue There's this (relatively) action-packed and tense ending where the main cast faces certain death and then out of nowhere Germ, the friend who isn't really a friend, the character who you don't really know motivations or much of anything about other than "he's from somewhere" (even in the Weird Autumn edition), that guy saves your life because he happened to be there. Or maybe it's a sign of a loving God. It ties back into the lack of choice and control that not just the player and Mae, but most characters have. Mae is still a screw-up and doesn't get to be a hero who saves the town and her friends. She's alive by chance. And despite the mass murder she was part of (that the characters _do_ talk about quite a bit and are clearly emotionally affected by), despite this big thing happening, nobody's personal problems are solved. Bea still has a shitty dad and a shitty job, Mae is still mentally ill, Gregg and Angus are still moving away and their relationship might fall apart when they do. There's no real proper "conclusion" that ties up everything in a nice box because life still goes on, autumn turns to winter, the world keeps turning. All that actually changed was Mae's attitude, as seen in her big monologue during the ending. And that's all that needed to change, because the big story of finding a ghost that only Mae believes in and stopping the cult is really about identifying and confronting the ghosts in Mae's head. Which you do. And even if the cult is dead, which they might not be, the Hole is definitely still there, and you can't make it go away. But you can tell the hole to go "eff" itself because life is worth living.
it will only be unhandle-able and lose it's original feel wile simplifying what people originally bought the game for. tho the bolt ons for the LS... What about a 5.0l?
Thanks everyone basic story short I'm diabetic was running late for work need to take my insulin grabbed the wrong kind and overdosed I am at home thank you everyone for the positive responses you guys rule
I disagree about your conclusions of it being a game. How you play influences your relationships with other characters -- who Mae ends up being closer with and her relationships with those other characters IS different based on how you play. How close you end up to secondary characters is also changed by this.
I would love to see what Mister Regular has to say about Kentucky Route Zero, another game fitting within the Rustbelt Gothic group. It's a lot alike Night in the Woods, though deals with different themes in parts, and has a Kentucky setting rather than Pennsylvania.
Right on. It's clear you really went in-depth with experiencing all NITW has to offer. I loved the heck out of Night in the Woods and agree 100% about your interpretation of the overall theming and message of the story. NITW is about the characters dealing with the circumstances of ordinary living in a slowly dying rust belt town and learning to find a little light in their messed up lives, and I felt that aspect of personal interaction and growth was the story's strong point. The ending dialing things up to 11 and having an actual "murder cult of dads" certainly wasn't necessary, but I didn't feel that it ruined the experience. More of an "I kinda wish they had done X or Y instead" feeling. Still something I'd recommend to most people, particularly if they feel any nostalgia for small towns and/or that region of the country. Good characters, good music, good design, good atmosphere, and very slice-of-life-y.
Yes! This game and Persona 5 are my favorites in 2017. I can't disagree with the critique of the ending. But I still loved the game / novel and its characters.
Loved this video. It's always great to see people giving video games the serious critical attention you deserve. You definitely helped me appreciate this game a bit more, and vocalized some of my issues with it better than I could. If you ever feel like making another one of these, I would love to see one on Undertale.
This was the most interesting thing I've seen in a long time. The only comparable thing I've heard this year is Ari Shapiro breaking composure and vehemently denouncing the year on air. It's beautiful, the delivery is on point, thank you
I love that you're branching out! From reinvigorating car reviews with your unique brand social and literary readings with low-brow humour to your diaries and history lessons to this. It has all been both very entertaining and enlightening. Please keep on doing what you're doing!
I'd seriously love to see a spinoff channel where you analyze themes in video games, movies, or other forms of media like this if you enjoy doing it. I've seen a lot of people try to break down this game and its themes but out of the blue, my favorite car reviewer has the best video on it. Even a podcast or something where you analyze themes like this would be really enjoyable.
This was brilliant. Thanks Mr. Regular. Stellar analysis dude. Reminded me of the good fun in high school English class, especially identifying themes and motifs.
I was not expecting this. This is fantastic, aside from not being a car. You seem really passionate about NiTW, passion and pen go a long way, I hope there's a call in your future for a spot.
I've always considered the writing in your videos excellent. I think it would be a great idea for you to make a second channel with literary content or some such, i love hearing your words!
Mr. Regular, your Miata video got me into cars, and as much as I am now all these years later obsessed to hell with them, I think you could make a topic on just about anything and it would be interesting, I just think you're a great writer/narrator!
i went through a phase where i was like.. obsessed with this game. i dont like it as much as i used to. but bea still is my favorite and sometimes even brings a smile to my face
1st: I hope the view counts on this video aren't as high as other videos for the simple reason that people are just waiting to have 20+ minutes to digest it. That's what took me so long to get around to it. 2nd: ..."didn't write themselves into a corner... wrote themselves into a cornfield." Why have I never heard an expression like this before? It's brilliant and makes total sense. Maybe it's just because I'm a fellow English-degree-holding-Pennsylvania, familiar with cornfields. 3rd: I haven't scrolled through the feedback which is likely to be filled with troves of hatred, but I wouldn't mind more videos like this in the future. Keep up the fine work, Mr. Regular & company!
An extended version of the NitW, called the "Weird Autumn" edition, was released on December 13th. Ah, I can't watch the whole thing, because I haven't played this yet and I want to but I'm soooooo happy that you played this game and felt enough of something to make a video on it! Also, I'm surprised that it has anything to do with Pennsylvania. I didn't know that and now I feel like I have even more reason to play it. : )
I might have to track down some rust belt gothic literature. I am from New Brunswick, Canada, and the themes speak to me, and remind me of a lot of similar issues there. It was the only province to shrink in the 2016 census, outside of a few cities the population is quickly falling and ageing. The economy has been stagnant, traditional industries such as logging were hit hard by the high dollar as they relied hugely on exports to the US, numerous pulp mills closed during the 2000s, major mines have shut down, and for years the government pushed hard to attract call centres, but they have also been closing. I'd love to find some more homegrown works, but there does not seem to be a lot of people writing about the area.
There's tons of great stories taking place in Pennsylvania, Rocky, Philadelphia, The Sixth Sense, Invincible, 12 Monkeys, The Philadelphia Story, The Young Philadelphians, Shooter, National Treasure, and many many more.
Finally got this game and played it. Fantastic video. Yeah, I'd love a sequel because pretty much nothing was resolved except Mae's crazy dreams. I want more of the town wandering and less crazy hallucinatey shenanigans.
You mean thank Clinton for NAFTA. Reaganomics is what revitalized the rust belt during the 80s and early 90s after Carter's stagflation made it too expensive to manufacture anything in America.
I was wondering when you'd talk about this. Thank you. :) Also that would be surreal, if Mr. Regular and The Roman helped work on a Night in the Woods sequel.
You know that scene from Dumb&Dumber when the cop pulls them over and says "Are you aware that it's against the law to have an open alcohol container here in the state of Pennsylvania?" Well, that was my idea of the place before RCR :D
Idea: start an enterprise called "Regular Reviews". This channel, RegularGameReviews, RegularMowerReviews, etc. each channel has a different host, therefore a different personality.
The 1992 chevrolet tracker/suzuki tracker was considered one of the most dangerous cars distributed in the USA due to its tendacy to flip. And i Challenge original cars to review this classic and give an impressional review of what its really like
1cool son-of-a-bitch another issue the tracker had (specifically in my country) was that GM couldn't decide on a name. It was called the Chevrolet Tracker, Geo Tracker, GMC tracker, Asüna Sunrunner, and Pontiac Sunrunner. And this was all between 1989 and 1994 lol
this channel is more eastern pennsylvanian than passing an amish buggy in a lowered VW jetta on a 2 lane road through a corn field on your way to pick up a hoagie from sheetz.
I loved NITW but your criticisms of the game's story were spot on. It felt like the game had a lot going for it and got more exciting with each day, only for the climax to seem rushed and concluded with a deus ex machina and the resolution leaving us with more questions than answers. There wasn't much as far as gameplay goes, definitely more story-oriented. The quirky characters, pretty art style, and beautiful music does make up for some of its faults. Additional small nitpick was it seemed the devs tried to subtly push in both a political and religious agenda that kinda stood out from the rest of the story, it feels a bit tacked on but nothing too blatant where it detaches you from the story completely. A sequel to this game would be interesting but I question how exactly that would be executed.
When I played this game, my mom was suffering from the same illness that Beatrice Santello's mother died off from. And it shook me to my very core. As of recent, my mother passed away and the more the days drag on, its odd how I find myself with similer mannerisms to her.

I love all the references in your reviews to great games like this one.
Always love it when you mix it up like this.
Great game, great review, 10/10.
The Smelters are such an obvious reference to the Steelers. But playing this game reminds me of my home town in PA and I love it

i really enjoyed this regular video game review, id love for more like this
Now this is why I subbed to this channel.
I think I learned more in this 24 minute video, than all four years of my highschool English career. This is a very well written story, good job man.
oh yeah I forget that Mr. Regular is a proper nerd
An extended version of the NitW, called the "Weird Autumn" edition, was released on December 13th. I have not played the pre-update version of the game (someone got me the game for Christmas, thinking I'd like it. I did!), and thus I am curious to see if the additions made make the ending more satisfying compated to the original version.
Thanks for the interesting and legit educational literary analysis! (I need to read "The Lottery...) I've literally never seen your channel before I went hunting for NitW analysis after beating the game.
Man it is a shame this video has so few views what with how deep it is. I know I greatly enjoyed listening.
no, this is a car.
Mr. Regular, if you ever wrote a book, or had a hand in a possible NitW2 I would throw money at you and roman, with as much force as could be put into digital transference of currency. Additionally, I would definitely love having more videos like this, even if you put them an an alternate channel to keep with the "CAR SHOW" set up of this channel.
I just came across this and appreciate your commentary.
That might not be a car or even a game, but damn is that cartoon goat in the first picture cute as fuck.
If you think middle-aged people are cute, I guess.
Loved it. Looking forward to more of these from you guys! Enjoy your time off this week. :)
Thanks a lot for doing this! Was interesting to hear how you broke down NiTW in game POV and literary POV.
Many of these same themes can be seen in the run down imagery of the American South in season 1 of True Detective. While not the main theme of the show, the desolation was striking. I love RCR taking a chance with this video and it was extremely well done.
I love this channel for this kind of stuff
woah a games review
that's okay, I loved this game, it's weird to see two of my passions melded into one

This tube needs more Non Car Reviews! Really would love some book reviews in this style, c'mon this is almosdt a Dracula Review in itself! Brilliant!
I like this game simply because it was different to most of the games I played. I have not completed it yet, so I have not watched past the 5 minute mark, so I can't wait to come back here to watch the remainder of the video
I knew this was coming! I FUCKING KNEW IT! I HAD THIS FEELING IN MY BUTT IT WAS COMING!
As I'm from Pittsburgh, I'm very pumped about this.
Oh fuck finally, I've heard the podcast over and over about this and its finally out

I like literary Mr Regular
Ah, I can't watch the whole thing, because I haven't played this yet and I want to but I'm soooooo happy that you played this game and felt enough of something to make a video on it! Also, I'm surprised that it has anything to do with Pennsylvania. I didn't know that and now I feel like I have even more reason to play it. : )
I might have to track down some rust belt gothic literature. I am from New Brunswick, Canada, and the themes speak to me, and remind me of a lot of similar issues there. I'm glad someone else read the interview with the developers and saw that Rust Belt gothic term and how head on it was.

I would like more Mr. Regular book reviews. I liked his summary of Edgar Allen Poe.
finally a literary analysis style video of night in the woods!!
I would love to see more of these!
This taught me more about literary analysis than any english class I've ever taken. Wish I could've had Mr. regular as an actual teacher
Rather interesting to hear about "The Lottery". I had to analyze that story multiple times during high school.

Not the usual stuff, but still very enjoyable.

I was wondering when you'd talk about this. Thank you. :)
Also that would be surreal, if Mr. Regular and The Roman helped work on a Night in the Woods sequel.
For the first time ever i actualy stopped the video when the spoiler warning came up. If Mr. Regular said to do so, that story has to be good.
Great video as usual.
Would love to see rcr work on NitW 2 and do more literary analysis videos in the future
Yeah...but what about Bea's car?
You know that scene from Dumb&Dumber when the cop pulls them over and says "Are you aware that it's against the law to have an open alcohol container here in the state of Pennsylvania?"
Well, that was my idea of the place before RCR :D
I want to take this audio and put it over some of the "exploring closed malls" vids on RUclips.

WE WANT REGULAR GAME REVIEWS
I like it. I like this direction.
NOT A CAR
-e in the world that this isn't about automobiles. It was great.

R.i.p...
RCR is the only automotive channel I'm subscribed, everything else is videogames for me, so... *shrug*
Y'know what? I'm okay with this being a thing that happens sometimes.
i liked the ending. articulating why is more than a comment
