@@danzansandeev6033 Yeah it took me a second. When he first was shown I did a double take and thought "Wait I know that guy." It wasn't until he started speaking that it clicked with me.
Did you notice Joel was sleeping on his good ear when they snuck up on them? That's why he couldn't hear them coming. The attention to detail on this show is just amazing.
When i saw that the first thing i said was "noo, youre on your good ear!". I wonder if that will come into play later, that he got a little too relaxed, i think because he had some giggles and released some stress..but that ultimately leads to him not being as attentive and bam got snuck up on. It could be nothing but i felt a little of that.
She states that FEDRA school taught her how to hold a gun so I assumed they taught her how to clear the chamber and handle one as well. I think you missed the part in episode one where Ellie talks about FEDRA teaching orphans like her to be FEDRA soldiers when they grow up. FEDRA was making kid fascists like most authoritarian regimes do.
I mean...every school in the apocalypse should be a military school, ideology aside. It's just practical survival skills.
@@viktorstagnetti7491 Courses on gun safety and other survivalist skills don't require military school. As recently as 50 years ago public schools all over the US were teaching exactly that. Those are skills farm kids need.

@Viktor Stagnetti I mean agree with survival skills being taught, but fuck fedra. Genociding healthy people, raising child soldiers, ect. It's prolly what would always happen in this situation, but that doesn't mean it should.
When Kathleen, the merc leader lady, was interrogating the doctor she mentioned that Henry sold out her brother to FEDRA and that got her brother killed so she basically just wants revenge on Henry because of that

@Pitiless Nightmare in the game there is no Kathleen. The Hunters are just mobs of raiders who make life hell for Joel and Ellie. Love that they've given them more depth and the casting for the leader is very interesting. Great actress

Not me screaming that they did the pun book and the magazine scene… I was like … they’re doing it!! They’re doing it!! … also The tank filling and the convo that followed was for sure a nod to the hydro dam part in the game where Joel is like “I know what it is, but I don’t know how it works”
My exact thought as I saw it too
The implication is that Kathleen blames Henry for “snitching” to FEDRA about her brother, which led to him getting beaten to death in a FEDRA cell and Kathleen then spearheading the revolt to take over the QZ. Obviously that’s not the whole story and we’ll probably be hearing about what happened from Henry himself next episode but Kathleen’s so blinded by vengeance, something is going to go SPECTACULARLY tits up.
Given, ya know, the ‘breathing’ floor and what is likely under it
You can see how she landed the job, but also can see why she isn't a long term solution.
Unfortunately for everyone, lots of different forces have aligned themselves to pop up at the same time... Episode 5 is going to be the episode with the most action. It's going to be chaos.

From what I've heard her brother was leading the revolt and after he died she took over by default I guess, bc she's an extraordinarily bad leader.

A couple of things:
There aren't Starbucks in the QZ, Ellie was just saying she's seen a couple closed down ones and "That's what they used to sell?!"
Also, Perry, the second in command of the hunter group, is Tommy's actor from the games!
I want to believe that Starbucks survived Outbreak Day, because those stores spread like a fungal infection 😉

I’ve driven over that blue bridge at least 30 times. It’s the I-70 bridge at Wheeling, WV. And that is exactly what it looks like. Including the surrounding buildings.
My headcanon on why Kathleen is in charge is that in taking over the QZ, most of the rebel leadership was killed and she was some mid-level rebel shoved into the leadership role
I am from KC and I agree that they are not representing the city well but I also understand why they used it.
And when Adam was talking about staying limber and...lubricated... A lubricated groin. Priceless!
Kathleen has real Karen energy. She spoke to the "manager" and killed him.
I am KCK born and raised. Yes, Jay...Kansas City has many fine people and qualities. This episode reminded me of watching The Day After when I was in high school in the '80s. Whether it be a nuclear event or a fungal pandemic, seeing my city buildings serving as the backdrop for an apocalyptic wasteland is devastating. (Mushrooms, mushroom clouds...equal amount of emotional trauma).
On a happier side note, Pedro hosting SNL this past week was such a joy! The "trailer" for the HBO Mario Kart series was so fun. I'd watch the heck out of that show! C'mon, HBO...make it happen! And for a further KC tie-in, the Super Bowl wings commercial they did with Pedro sporting Chiefs gear and a Patrick Mahomes jersey made my heart so happy!
22:15 I think this is what I appreciate most about the series. The longer episodes just allow you to breathe & be in the moment.
I don't think anyone is going to breathe in episode 5. This is going to the most chaotic episode of the season.
Joel and Ellie, Sam and Henry, the hunters, and the infected all just getting along together in peace i'm sure 🤣

That roller-coaster is at worlds of fun. It's a theme park in Kansas City. Rode it many times. It's cool to see KC in a big time thing because you definitely don't see it much.
The best cameos from the game are Jeffrey Pierce who plays Perry and was Tommy's voice actor on the game, and that pun book. I wasn't sure the pun book would make an appearance and here it is sowing the seeds of bonding between Daddy Pedro and his mushroom murder baby.
Why am I crying at Joel apologizing to Ellie? I blame Pedro's performance. He's been SO good.
Seeing Joel stay up all night on watch, all because Ellie was scared...so fucking heartwarming.
Joel is going full Dad mode and I doubt he even realizes it.
The dad jokes were a perfect device to help spark his humanity, allowing him to start to bond with Ellie. His past haunts him so much, and copes by cutting himself off from it. He doesn't remember who he is anymore, but Ellie is reminding him. She's bringing Joel back to who he was before the world had that very bad weekend.
Ellie has grown up in a post-apocolyptic world, but contrary to what Joel believes, Ellie has hope for the future, and wants to enjoy her life. (I believe she knows how her story plays out, and what her immunity means. She has to believe, and does believe, her life now has significant meaning, which, I think, gives her that joyfulness. The death of **spoiler** filled her with guilt, anger, and self-loathing, but her immunity gave meaning to it all...she has a purpose now, and so **spoiler** didn't die in vain) Her seeming naivety, from Joel's perspective, sparks his Protector mode, something he's very good at, but that mode is inextricably linked to his Dad mode around Ellie (you have to have kids to fully understand what that means).
Joel's cynicism, from such a tragic past, is starting to erode as he sees how joyful and spirited Ellie is. At first, he thinks she's dumb, naive, and wants nothing to do with her. She's a burden, a promise made...and just cargo. But, he's transforming, emerging from his cocoon...it's so beautiful to watch. 😭
Joel: "First time you hurt..."
Jay: "a Brian." 😂
Kathleen said already what happened to her to be in search of Henry: she believes he ratted her brother out to be executed.

Lots of funghi species have huge underground network called a mycelium. It is literally a way in which funghi communicate with plants and trees.
I like how the ground shaking part in this episode reminds some people of Emergence Day from Gears Of War. I never played them (though I wish) but I know what they mean about "Emergence Day" in that franchise.
"How would she know that joke....?" Well Adam, I believe Ellie is meant to be 14 in the show and she's been raised in a FEDRA orphanage so she probably heard plenty of adults talk loosely around her 😅

Since I have no knowledge of the game, I spent a good chunk of the episode thinking this was one of those scenarios where Henry had long-since died, and was basically just a bogeyman used to whip people up in a frenzy.

I'd like to think, Joel was able to relax and fall asleep so he wasn't as alert and wired for sound like he normally is because of that last interaction before he fell asleep😎. Dude probably had not giggled like that in 20 years. Crazy how they have similar scenes in the last couple of episodes and be completely impactful and be completely different. 🤘🔥🤘

If I had to guess what that underground thing is, I would go with the huge fungi monster that was shown in one of the trailers. Sh*t is about to go down, at least the wait wont be as long this time.
yea, I started replaying last of us remastered, and passed the part where tess dies, and they literally just have her try to kill the people that come to the fedra building, trying to trade, and they just kill her, and you see her dead body when leaving the building. on this balcony area above her.
As soon as I saw her pull out *THE* joke book I actually threw my fists sky high. And I’m so glad that they added the diarrhea joke because I was afraid they would *run* out of ideas.
But seriously, this show is so insanely faithful to the game that it doesn’t feel like a show but almost like an expansion pass/extended cut of the game. Even though I do miss the scene of Joel teaching Ellie how to use a rifle and then saying “No matter what happens, you make every show count” I still love him teaching her how to use the pistol because a) it shows the bond between these two growing and b) it tells the audience that Ellie had some training from FEDRA so her learning quickly feels natural.
And now we are getting to see the more human side of the people who were trying to kill Joel and Ellie in Kansas City (instead of Pittsburgh like in the game). Neil Druckman and Craig Mazin said their inspiration came from how throughout history there have been cases where the revolution that usurps a repressive regime becomes just as bad if not worse than the previous regime. Also loved that we got to see Jeffery Pierce (aka Tommy from the games) finally show up in the show as Perry the right hand man of Kathleen.👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽

A Brian from Kansas City here (Overland Park). Grew up on the Missouri side and can confirm Kansas side is better. Also, can confirm, finding the exit back to the highway from the city with a map (even with Google Map directions) suuuuuucks here. If you don't know the area, you will get lost. Also, I'm Team-Not-Shoot-Or-Knife-Brian. ;) I don't see many big budget films/shows focus on Kansas City, so it was really exciting to see so many familiar spots, like the roller coasters at World's Of Fun, or one of the Love's Arby's truck stops. Lot of memories.
Just a heads up! The next episode will air on this Friday as the super bowl is on Sunday.

Ellie had me cackling this episode. I felt bad for the guy she shot. But I loved seeing her and Joel bond. And I’m interested in learning more about the rebels and Henry and Kathlene’s story. No spoilers I haven’t played the game. I just binged all 4 episodes today because I love Pedro and the show is relevant to today and my field of study. Kinda. And the accessible version of the game comes out on pc in March. Did we get episodes on Saturday and Sunday this week? They mentioned 2 episodes. But man this show is so good!

She was not. None of the hunters here had any depth, so it's nice to see them flesh it out. The overthrowing of Fedra was present in the background.

Karen had mom speechifying energy. She could rally a crowd after years of PTA speeches.
You can see the attributes that led to her being a leader, but you can also see the cracks and her personality flaws that would lead such a leader not to be there for the long term.
Unfortunately, she chose a really bad time to be caught lacking with all that's happening in the vicinity right now.
