    09-AUG-2022. An Aer Lingus Airbus A330-300 (A333), registration EI-FNG, performing flight EIN13J from Windsor Locks Bradley International Airport, CT (USA) to Boston Logan International Airport, MA (USA) after departure was informed by other pilot about fumes from the engine. About 1 minute later the crew declared PAN-PAN, reported compressor stall and requested return to Windsor Locks.

    N178CF: Best I could tell, about 1000 feet AGL that Shamrock let out a burst of… fume of the right engine.
    TOWER: Shamrock 13J, any issues with your right engine?
    EIN13J: Yeah, we are just sorting that out. Did you see anything on the ground there?
    TOWER: Pilot just reported it.
    EIN13J: Yeah, we had a big long bang with no indications here just yet. So we’re just gonna level-off at 4000 for a moment.
    TOWER: Okay, if you need to circle back for RW 6, let me know. Do you wanna stay on this frequency or go to Departure?
    EIN13J: Stay on this frequency for a moment, Shamrock 13J.
    TOWER: Roger.
    DAL2251: Tower, Delta 2251.

    DAL2251: 2251, I saw… It looked like a compressor stall on his right motor.
    TOWER: Delta 2251, thank you.
    EIN13J: And Shamrock 13J, PAN-PAN-PAN, we would like to return to the airport. And we’ve just got a compressor stall in our engine.
    TOWER: Shamrock 13J, wind 320 at 5 RW 6 cleared to land.
    EIN13J: Cleared to land, Shamrock 13J. Just confirm… fly heading again?
    TOWER: Heading 32…
    EIN13J: Shamrock 13J, give me a heading again.
    TOWER: RW 6 cleared to land.
    EIN13J: We need radar headings just for a moment. We’re leveling at 4000. We just need a minute or two to get it sorted. So just let me down ... extended downwind.
    TOWER: Okay, turn right heading 240 and I’ll hand you off to Approach control for vectors.
    EIN13J: Heading 240, that’s copied, Shamrock 13J.
    UAL2042: United 2042, visual 24.
    TOWER: United 2042, Bradley Tower, cancel approach clearance, turn right heading 330, climb and maintain 3000.
    UAL2042: Alright, say that again?
    TOWER: 2250, stand by, Shamrock 13J Heavy, contact Bradley Approach now 123.95, expect vectors for RW 6.

    HOW I DO VIDEOS:
    1) I monitor media, airspace, looking for any non-standard, emergency and interesting situation.
    2) I find communications of ATC unit for the period of time I need.
    3) I take only phrases between air traffic controller and selected flight.
    4) I find a flight path of selected aircraft.
    5) I make an animation (early couple of videos don’t have animation) of flight path and aircraft, where the aircraft goes on his route.
    6) When I edit video I put phrases of communications to specific points in video (in tandem with animation).
    7) Together with my comments (voice and text) I edit and make a reconstruction of emergency, non-standard and interesting situation in flight.

    I am a supervisor at BDL. I fueled this when it initially diverted here. It's still there. They will be completely changing their number 2 engine.

      @@msjdb723 They ended up bussing the 314 total people including crew up to Boston. Very long day for them. They actually went back to the gate in DUB due to a medical emergency. So they left 2 hours late from DUB before they diverted from BOS to BDL.

    One correction to the subtitles - she said "we can't exit onto Hotel". It sounds as if that was because of the fire and rescue vehicles being at that exit.

    That pilot knew EXACTLY what she wanted and communicated it clearly and firmly. She also chose to err on the side of caution and have services on standby which was a very smart move.

      @@khiggins7231 Listen, I know that people who suffer from like conditions tend to take up for one another, but seriously No one is calling out their, or your, obvious low testosterone levels.
      Yes the voice on the recording above would indicate the testosterone level of an average 12 year old girl, but You and he should not feel discouraged.
      Though you will have to spend your lives correcting people who call you "Ma'am" on the phone, you can also celebrate the fact that you have very little risk of things such as prostate cancer or male pattern baldness, when compared to those with average testosterone levels.

      They were even nice enough to convert fuel to pounds without having to be asked for it. Generally I feel EU pilots have better communication with ATC and amongst one another. Maybe it’s because it’s more formal and there is less banter?

      @@kushalraj EU flights will be dealing with a lot of pilots for whom English is not their first language. Banter doesn't translate well from English to German to French to italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Swedish etc

    There must have been an additional complication beside the compressor stall. I’ve been on two flights that had compressor stalls - both in the 1970s on 727s, center engine of course. But after the loud bang and shudder, we continued climbing and headed to our destination on both flights. No further problems. Perhaps this particular engine suffered collateral damage from the stall.

      AerLingus is a top notch airline and highly trained pilots. I would not fetter in flying with them and watching this, makes me even feel safer. They are one of the best in aviation.

    I was an airline pilot for only one year when I was a passenger on an SAS flight that had declared an emergency due to no oxygen at 35,000 feet. The flight crew was so panicky that I wish that I had been the flying pilot instead. I spent my time trying to calm the adult passengers around me, who were in tears, because of the quivering voice of the first officer, as he donned his oxygen mask.

      Yeah he continued to fly around aimlessly until he ran out of fuel. Crashed and burned he did but thankfully they were only American on board.. 🙂

    fast talking isn't working good. Maybe it helps in normal operation, but in stressfull situations, there should be a standard and clear communication, why isn't that standard proces with airline/atc?

    Wow wild to think I had flown on that plane earlier in the year. I have a few recordings of the take offs and always sat on the right side. After seeing this video its a shame I didn't get it on film.

      Initially they were going from Dublin to Boston but diverted to Windsor Locks. So they were just going to their destination.

      pan is more of a warning and mayday is more of an emergency, but they get treated the same in the USA

      Pan-pan is an urgency call, mayday is an emergency call. BTW re. what the commenter below said about the USA: neither are generally used by US crews - they go with the "declaring an emergency" phraseology.

      internet says 9500' vs 6800' feet, so maybe?

      @@jamescollier3 6800' seems to be enough for a normal MLW, maybe they wanted the extra length due to having degraded performance in the event of a go-around.
      I don't know, just speculating here lol.

      After the incident, tower asked if they wanted to return to 06 and they said yes. After that approach asked for 33 but they were probably already configured the ils frequencies and everything for 06 approach. They had enough happening already in there. Sudden runway change in that situation is not what you want.

      Shorter runway, flaps 15 landing possibly? With a compressor stall, I sure wouldn't want to count on the #2 engine for TOGA power, though they still had the engine...

      Most likely they just were already setting up for 06 and didn't want to change at the last moment, they just wanted to get down ASAP.

      They're very rarely given to airliners here haha. Circle to lands are way more common as far as visual maneuvuers are concerned. Otherwise it's all ILS or RNP/RNAVs

      @@davidkavanagh189 Apologies, I find the comments section are usually filled with more americans than europeans on these videos haha.
      I wonder if doing the ILS is encouraged at most eu companies during emergency situations, if availible, given a (potentially) lower workload? Going through my flight training right now, but this is a bit of a knowledge gap at the moment.
