Hi John!!! This type of music symphonic and also folk metal have never been my cup of tea...... don't like the mix of the operatic vocals with the metal. I remember when they appeared with Tarja and thought it was not a cool mix of styles, but they seems to have a big fan base and that's cool and proves that i might be completely wrong, lol.... cheers and be well
Yeah, I was never the biggest fan of symphonic metal in the past, but once, someone from another channel asked me to do a Nightwish ranking with them and I listened to all of their albums. Since then, I have been a fan of this band. This genre is an aquired taste. There are a few other good bands like Epica and Beyond the Black that I like as well.
Just FYI: "The Day Of..." is not about some AI apocalypse, but criticizing/mocking it - it's about the constant fearmongering of how the end is coming every few years, but it's all nonsense. Funny and ironic, some Christian reactors completely misunderstand the song to be a prophecy of doomsday, practically demonstrating the point by being controlled by their amygdala and imaginary fear lol.
Tryed to rank the album songs, be aware the songs are quite new to me also, so i might rank it diffrent after more listens, maybe listening with the upcoming lyric videos, will change my scores. Yesterwynde - 8/10 A ocean of strange islands - 10/10 The Antikythera mecanism - 8,5/10 The day off.. - 8,5/10 Perfume of the timeless - 9/10 Sway - 8,5/10 The children of Ata - 9/10 Something whispered follow me - 8,5/10 Spider silk - 8,5/10 Hiraeth - 9/10 The weave - 8,5/10 Lanternlight - 9,5/10 Album rank: 8,8/10 My description of this album could be this, a wall of sounds, and songs that take you in directions you cant predict, in a good way, also very doffrent vibes in the diffrent songs, after listeng to the album several times it did grow on me, and i feel the album gives a diffrent vibe listening to it from start to finish, then when i just listened to the singles, love the album by now!!
“Something Wicked”??? … it’s “Something Whispered Follow Me” 😐 Just busting ya balls lol 😜. Yeah I agree it’s the best album they’ve done with Floor. It’s a very textured and proggy album (possibly the most progressive album in their catalogue). Takes some listens to unpack but once it sinks its teeth in, it goes deep. 9/10 from me too. Good review. P.S. Lanternlight is the most gorgeous and tender song they’ve ever done 🥹
Objective and direct review, the is not any pretentious of superiority here, it is a great analysis, 🧐 thanks for that! Hope to see more about your work.

Great review dude! Pretty much on point regarding how I felt about this album after listening to it 3 times (after 3 listens, that's when I give my initial review/rating). I think 'Yesterwynde' is the best Nightwish album featuring Floor Jansen. I honestly enjoy 'Dark Passion Play' and 'Imaginaerum', 'Oceanborn' and 'Once' more. Largely because the core sound (guitars, drums) stands out a bit more and there's more expression to those instruments (in my opinion). However, Nightwish's evolution in sound is interesting. Each eras of Nightwish has a good amount of music to offer and never sounds one in the same. As far as symphonic metal goes, EPICA is my favorite because they explore heavier territories (some good death metal growls contrasting beautifully with Simone's amazing clean and operatic vocals) allowing more breathing room for the guitars and drums. The orchestral arrangements in Epica's music to me are more balanced (not so over the top) where often times is more supportive than it is upfront. Anyway, it's nice to expand the music pallette checking out other styles of metal. Great review man!
Thanks I appreciate the comment. I agree that this is the best album with Floor. I have also listened to Epica and I also like Beyond the Black and Therion.
I've lost interest in Nightwish since they've released Endless Forms Most Beautiful. I've more or less outgrown them. But I'm glad you're digging the new one from them
That was a mostly underwhelming album (a few highlights). It lacked the fantastical and whimsical energy of the Anette Era, and took a turn towards themes of science.. which just felt super dry. Human: Nature had more melodic music in my opinion, but was their first record in the new Era that didn't include a background orchestra. So it was unique but felt less cinematic. This new record seems to be a fusion of those 2 records, but I don't think anything will ever top Imaginaerum. That record was like visiting an amusement park. Tuomas seemed a lot more playful back in those days.
It’s far from their best, but some standouts like The Children of ATA and Hiraeth make it solid. Their last opus is Imaginaerum. After that the magic went south.
@jcrockandmetalreviews I totally agree, and I generally disagree with the Annette haters who say she was not up to the nightwish job. However, I have to say that it had to wait for Floor to do Poet 'properly'.
Album of the year this one!
It is a contender.

It's their best album since *Human :||: Nature* . That was a breathtaking masterpiece. This goes one step further. 🤘🔥
Yeah, I thought it was a big improvement

Thanks for the correction. I the imagery in the music video makes more sense now.

Good ranking. I agree, there are no weak songs on this album.
Since it's release I have played it 4 times. I feel it has a lot of "Endless Forms..." elements in it. Definitely an improvement on the last album...
Yeah, much better than the last album.
Best since Imagenarium
That was another good one.
Btw…., Tuomas = TOO- MOSS. 😜🤘
Thanks I'll keep it in mind when I do the ranking video 😄

Thanks I agree with your score. And I don't mind the correction, sometimes I take notes using voice typing and it comes out wrong LOL
@@jcrockandmetalreviews I, for one, wouldn't be averse to NIGHTWISH writing a song (or starting a concept) concerning "Something Wicked"! :)

That's understandable, but the last 2 albums with Floor were kind of the weaker ones in their discography. This one is much better in my opinion.
You never outgrow Nightwish because they refuse to stagnate or pander to fans who choose not to vo with them.

The Annette Olzen albums are awesome

One of their better ones In my opinion
