I don't know, I want to like him but I can't help but find Hazel to be really hypocritical. He's angry at and hates Ozpin for his sister's early death and for recruiting and turning children, teens and youths into child soldiers yet he's siding with a Evil power hungry psychotic centuries old queen who in all likelihood frequently kills and murders children along with their parents, and we can clearly see him hurting and torturing Team RWBY, JNPR and Oscar all of whom are clearly according to Hazel himself children.
And Emerald too is no better. I guess you can argue that he ultimately regrets and feels genuine guilt over his actions and atones for it in his final moments, but it would have been more satisfying to see Hazel actually pay for his crimes in a court and function as a sort of conscripted fighter. And while we're at it let's do the same with Emerald, seeing as her redemption arc is really subpar. Yeah, have them actually pay for his crimes in a court of law and function as sort of conscripted fighters against their former Mistress.

Hazel was always a character I liked. He wasn't right, but he did what he needed to for his goals, and for those of who he served, and nothing more. He didn't want to fight Ren and Nora, he didn't want Sienna to die that day, he only wanted his vengeance against Oz, and only the minimum needed for Salem's goals with Haven, nothing more. He knew his limits and the limits of the job intimately, and he was prepared to take the hit when the job fell through. He was also the only person to treat Emerald and Mercury with any true respect when with Salem.
He wasn't an evil character, just one whose goals were misplaced, and he found the wrong person to lead him in that. I was glad to see he fought Salem in the end, even if it was the end for him.

Which is ornic since Ad seemed to be introduced as Hazel's character in the trailer. Someone who fought for his fellow faunus but eventually crossed the lines when he was willing to kill humans.
Then volume 3 onwards just bastardized whatever character he had to emo obsessed ex boyfriend. The while Faunus inequality part was honestly a lot of wasted potential.

I always loved hazel even when he was and evil and mad guy in volume 5 and hoped there was redemption for him because out of everyone in Salem's circle he seemed like the only non evil or asshole of the group. When he turned and had the moment with emerald my heart melted and I was just so happy getting something that I never expected. Truly a character to be remembered.

But, not til 31:00 did I believe that he would give his life them..... and for his own redemption!! One of the greatest deaths of redemption I've EVER seen since Vegeta's in DBZ!!!
Hazel could face his sister in the afterlife in the end.... with true honor!!! Bless his soul and thank you for showing us his full tale, I'mStrange. Please keep making these poignant posts. 😎👍🌹🎆✊

I always liked Hazel, the moment he helped Oscar and was so iffy on Adam killing Siena, it shown he is different to all the other Salem crew. What I didn't expect was him to become a father figure to Merc and most of all Emerald, that "Go." made me tear up cause it was so sweet. Hazel was key to Emerald in realizing Cinder didn't give sh#t about her and that Hazel cared. Too sad that their nuke took Salem off for only a couple of hours when Hazel himself said the best he could do by himself was several hours and here he had a kinetic energy blast from Oscar and they took her out for the same time, so idk that didn't make sense. But he went out like a boss, and one of few good characters in volume 8. Ironic how imo this volume started going downhill after Hazel died.
I always liked those characters that sympathize and care for other people, that's why Ironwood was my fav character before volume 8 till they decided to ruin him, and that's why Hazel is my favorite male character of the RWBY series
Rest in peace big fella, you are amazing.

feel free to disagree, but I felt like Hazel's character had a certain charm to it until it got to the part where he realized Ozpin was in the same room as him. I loved the cloud of mystery surrounding his entire person. I loved his ambiguity, how intentionally emotionless and calmly he handled tough situations like when he was with Adam and Sienna. It almost felt like he was a higher being of some sort, that neither of them was really worth his time. It was awesome, it was mysterious, it was badass, all until he started fighting Ozpin. After that he just sounded like a kid who's trying to find someone to be angry at but can't because he knows he's in the wrong.
Volume 8's Hazel was fine as well. It felt almost as if he was just somebody trying to follow his instinct and acted tough on the outside but was really conflicted on the inside, and that he ultimately did not know who he should serve, or if he should serve anyone at all. I just wish there was a bit more of a smoother transition between the two seemingly entirely different personalities, and that CRWBY played with the first one a bit more.
Once again, feel free to disagree. I don't have that much experience in writing, I'm just going on based off how much I enjoyed Hazel as the timeline progresses.

Jaune and Hazel are definitely meant to be foils. It might not seem that way because they don't ever actually fight... but their was no way Jaune wasn't going for Cinder at Haven. But it's still pretty obvious. Ghost-Ozpin calls Hazel "wounded in a way that can not be healed," and then the next episode Jaune gets a healing Semblance. A lot of the RWBY characters (not just the villains) are deconstructions of "morally grey" archetypes. Hazel represents people like The Punisher and Red Hood, who deal with their pain by finding things to break and kill. The story points out how this is an idiot way of looking at the world, and of COURSE the bad guys would just use you as a tool.
