He wasn't condoning the war at all just acknowledging support for the American troops there at that time. He gave his version of how he felt if the age was increased & a draft was called that include those in his age bracket here in America his reaction & response most likely he's have. What I got from it was him poking at himself as to say he wouldn't have had the ability or been able to to distinguish between a right time & a wrong to time to fire his weapon at his stage, age of life. .
I don't think his intentions was to make light or make fun in any way the seriousness or other associated with the war then in regards to the killing of innocent women, children, civilians. Only that he wouldn't have been able to have kept proper composure & handle the situation rationally.
