Sennelier watercolors are lovely for glazing layers, and St. Petersburg White Nights are great for beginners, in my opinion! Your paper and brush type may effect your lifting abilities, & certain brands/pigments can contain dyes or colors that are more staining, (like QOR, which I adore as well, especially for wet in wet works,) which can make lifting more difficult. I've heard tell, people have used the household cleaning product, "Mr. Clean Magic Erasers", to lift or correct areas nearly back to the white of their paper but personally have only used these to clean stains from my palette so far. Wonderful description of the burnishing technique with colored pencils, Lioba! I, too, utilize the Luminance and Polychromos & absolutely love them! This is a gorgeous painting, and you've done an outstanding job with the piece. I've been enjoying your videos over the years! Thank you for your time, efforts, and generosity in sharing your artistic experiences & knowledge with us all! Blessings. 🎨💜
I believe this is more of an issue of knowing how to paint an eye, so I recommend Istebrak for that! I'd be really nice to have a video from Lioba in watercolors though.
This was an AWESOME video!! I feel like I learned so much from it 😂 I'm the worst at painting floating heads and leaving the backgrounds blank. I will have to try this fun splashing technique out one day, thanks for sharing!
Lioba, I love your style. I do portraits right now, but I am so obsessed with photorealism that one could ask Why bother with painting? Why not just have the photo? Good question! So I love the idea of making my portraits more painterly. I just don’t know how. I like your incorporation of color pencils with watercolor. I have been using watercolor pencils with watercolor. I should try color pencils. Thanks so much for your art and sharing your techniques and skills!
Beautiful portrait! When you started doing it, I really didn't think those splashes would work but they do. I really recommend Arteza paints for beginners or casual painters. The quality is quite good at a very affordable price compared to the more professional brands. I work with watercolor pencils, traditional color pencils and some watercolor for washes and backgrounds. I like having a matching color pallet across all the mediums. It makes it possible to get some really neat special effects. Great explanation of what you were doing, as well.
Well I just saw this and think she's totally beautiful!!! Of course I love her face but I also think her hair is so amazing. Your colors are beautiful and blend so wonderfully togethe. Thanks so much for this fun tutorial.💖👍👍
Beautiful result, as usual. You said the model's name like she's famous or something. I don't recognize the face or the name, but boy oh boy does she make a good model!! Her whole face is so pretty and expressive, and you captured every aspect of her face and hair wonderfully, and were still very free with the colors and composition elements!! It's funny how you said doing splashes makes you feel like a real painter, although your being a painter seems pretty real to me all along!!
Kenna (Cozy Kitsune) is a RUclipsr and Instagram model. She’s been problematic in the past, like stealing artwork and then chastising other people for “stealing ‘her’ artwork”. She’s pretty, but she’s had a bad attitude in the past that has hurt her reputation a lot.
Your videos are always so full of helpful information. This one is no exception. Thank you for taking the time to do your beautiful work and to post your highly informative videos.
there are many good artists who painted amazing watercolor masterpieces in RUclips but your work is my favorite . I always watch your video tutorials.I really love those abstractions ❤Lots of love from Philippines❤❤Merry Christmas!
I love this gorgeous gifted artist!! She's SO lovely, her talent is truely brilliant and her tutorials are outstanding! " My cup runneth over" with appreciation and awe! 💜💛💚💙xXx
I recommend Da Vinci for my beginner watercolor students, the price is SO good for professional quality. I don't believe students over the age of 12 should use anything but high-quality supplies because otherwise, you're fighting too many battles to increase your skills and confidence -fighting your unpredictable supplies at the same time as fighting inexperience. I add Silver Black Velvet brushes and Arches paper, too of course ;)
Melinda Wolf Da Vinci watercolors are professional grade?? I always thought they were student grade because they are a great price. Maybe I should try them.
@@sarahlaw5797 I find Da Vinci to be similar in quality to Daniel Smith and for classes I can buy them in larger tubes and give everyone a pan full to try. I first heard about them from another RUclipsr about 6 months ago. I am not an expert on their colors but all 6 of the ones I've tried are very high quality and have the benefit of being good in layered washes as well as being able to lift color when desired - with Qor and Daniel Smith, colors do one or the other well but usually not both things.
This is such a wonderful tutorial and portrait Lioba, thank you! I am currently working on your Seoyeon tutorial in Patreon and really enjoying it 💜 love from the UK xx
My fav palette to use is gansai tambi, Kuretake I don't have big experience tho, I rly wanna try schminke palette but it's so expensive 😢. Also question for the fabriano paper, how do u get such smooth look for the skin, I tried it and the effect was so abstract, even tho the background was beautiful i had to work on it with colored pencils more than usually, so I can achieve the realistic look that I want, has is to do with the watercolors? Or a specific technique. Thanks for another video as always beautiful study. Edit : anyway u just said it's not fabriano 😂
That was AWESOME! I don't paint much with watercolor but this inspires me to take another adventure. Lioba, can you make paintings in the style of Monet? That would be a great masterpiece of yours again!
Beautiful paintings, all of them on your channel. Do you think that it would work to use watercolour PENCILS (insteed of the ones you use?) and also normal water colours with brush. Thanks
What pencil did you use to draw that and what do you think is good for a beginner? I recently got interested in painting and I'd like to do portraits and landscaping. I'm thinking about getting acrylics first and I heard they dry faster by you can use mediums for it.
I really love to paint with acrylics I can really recommend the Lukas Acrylics they only cost 4€ for a big tube but if this is still too expensive for you as you need a minimum of 5-7 for good mixing I can recommend a cheap amazon set I bought one for 12€ with I guess 24 shades in tiny tubes but those are great to start out they tend to be seethrough especially the darker ones but just mix a bit white or black in it to make it opake. For watercolor I recently bought the 12 pan also from Lukas. My brushes were super cheap from amazon and they are so amazing I painted with da Vinci brushes before which are super expensive and the cheap ones even work better. Another tip invest in some good paper, doesn't need to be super expensive but just a bit more sturdy and higher quality than basic paper. My fav brushes: www.amazon.de/gp/product/B012354EE2/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 The acrylics I started out: www.amazon.de/gp/product/B00J4BEG2E/ref=ppx_od_dt_b_asin_title_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 And the Lukas Colors: www.amazon.de/Lukas-Künstlerfarben-Cryl-Pastos-6er-Acrylfarben-Sortiment-Spielzeug/dp/B0012FDZMW/ref=sr_1_5?__mk_de_DE=ÅMÅŽÕÑ&crid=31HU797QCCVUB&keywords=lukas+acrylfarben&qid=1563614878&s=toys&sprefix=Lukas+a%2Ctoys%2C142&sr=1-5
Would you say it's possible to get this result with Arches cold pressed 140 paper? I find it's so textured and I'm struggling to use colored pencils on it
Prismacolor are very soft pencils, so it is hard to keep them sharp. If you want pencils that stay sharp a lot longer, I love the Faber-Castell Polychromos. Some art stores have them open stock if you want to build up a collection of them slowly since they’re kind of pricey. They blend just as well as Prismacolor, and have just as much pigment, but have a harder core so they stay sharp longer. :)
I just spotted a mistake: At 13:07 I painted the hair with a worn-out calligraphy brush (amzn.to/2hYo3yX) not the Neptune detail brush! You can add hair strands with the detail brush, too of course! :)
My brain: Ok! i got it!!
My hand: No, you don't!

Can you eventually do a more in depth video of how to paint eyes? This is the main thing I struggle with in water color portraits.
