This is so different to almost every other interpretation I've ever heard. His 16th notes almost sound like they are swung!

What a masterpiece. I always was in love with this piece but hearing HIM playing it WITH HIS OWN HANDS? Hands down the best interpretation we can hear. I have goosebumps. He was a genius.

this was so light and so fast, just like a summer breeze. Very interesting how rigorous he was with the rhythm, which is not something you expect in impressionism. It's so cool we can hear him!
Stunning how different his crescendo is at 1:09 compared to every other version I have heard.
I agree completely. I was talking with my daughter who is a pianist and I mentioned that I loved this version better than the others as the pace is a bit quicker and that crescendo makes it feel different. She has smaller hands and said that is such a tough stretch to make at that pacing.
Hm, I was disappointed. Pardon me for saying it (I'm not a musician so maybe I lack appreciation for some aspects), but it sounds like at 1:11 he made an error...

This piece was never recorded by Debussy, the pieces he played for Welte Mignon are well documented, this one is unfortunately not one of them. In this time of (accidental) misinformation we all need to be more accurate.

I played this piece recently. Debussy is one of my favorite composers. What a wonderful performance!

Wonderful. Interestingly, so jaunty the way HE does it. So easy to make it sound like maudlin prog rock.
I imagine Claude Debussy created this wonderful composition for the girl with the flaxen hair like me😊

Piano rolls don’t usually have the the subtlety of live playing. Actually this is a good quality piano roll.
Thanks for sharing this recording of this great prelude, played by the master himself. A little quicker than some, but a great performance. The direction "very calm... " doesn't necessarily mean slow, anyway.

The roll was made 1913 and Debussy was playing himself then. And you do hear his way on an other piano. So sort of, it is the way he played it, with the sound of an other piano. So yes, he is playing. 1913”’!!! Isn’t it amazing!!!

Unlikely. He didn't play this prelude among the five he recorded for Welte-Mignon. Only these: "Danseuses de Delphes", "Le vent dans la plaine", "La cathédrale engloutie", "La danse de Puck" and "Minstrels.

ok, so Debussy doesn't respect any of the dynamics he wrote himself. I am confused;)
I am not sure, but piano rolls don't necessarily the differences of dynamics (and of timbre) intended by the pianist ; but the nuances of tempo, certainly, and I find them fascinating in this case
@@madrigal1956 The Welte-Mignon sistem was the most advanced one on recording the exact dynamics of the pianist. Many composers changed their interpretations of their own work, depending on the change of their taste.
