Here in Ohio, lately the way to get a used kayak under $1k is to find a used one that was only $500 new! That is only a slight exaggeration.
Several people I know have travel 6-8 hours to buy a used kayak at a decent price.
The covid has turned quite a few people into entrepreneurs. They will buy out what the big box stores have, to create an artificial shortage, and double or triple the price.

I watch both you guys. Lots of great info. I'm always learning something new from you two..
I'm compelled to say, this eve I went out with my newly outfitted
Liquid logic Remix xp9 and literally had the absolute best paddle of my life as far as comfort goes.
    Here's the magic combo.
I recently got the full foot bulkhead kit to replace the foot pegs I didn't even know were available till the other day for my xp9. My feet would be sore when I paddled a long day with those foot pegs in it ... Ouch.
Anyway, now in my xp9 with the new full foot bulkhead and the new high seat back that works great w sprayskirt by the way, in addition to the new Jackson happy seat that locks my legs into place w/o any effort.
    It's nearly like I'm paddling
in my easy chair...At 63 I'm so loving how it helps my older broken back.
Never will be w/o them again on the water.
The full foot bulkhead, the high seat back
    & the Jackson happy seat.
    Smiles

Most of the old composite Kayak companies have sense either stop making them or went out of business entirely. Necky Kayaks gone dagger composites gone wilderness composites pretty much gone. Even the British companies are hard to find in the US nowadays. Thankful Sterling still makes great composite kayaks in the USA, but they are pricey!

Hey there Dan! Reaching out in sort of desperation, as kayak dealers in WI are almost nil and the only place to really demo them within 2 hours of me is a place that has been really rough to deal with.
First time kayak potential purchase, going to be using it to fish in lakes, but also want something I can take to places like Boundary Waters in Minnesota, which is primarily a canoe area due to the portages and we'll be fishing and camping there.
What are your thoughts on something like this - nativewatercraft.com/product/ultimate-12/
Do you like hybrids at all? Would the reviews out at paddling.com (paddling.com/gear/native-watercraft-ultimate-12-kayak/) be worthwhile or do you find them to be inaccurate?
Thanks bud. Much respect and appreciation from the frozen north, Wisconsin.

Its not a unique rudder system. Mirage kayaks have been using that system for decades. I am sure they didn't invent it either. Also, your paddle holders look more like fishing rod holders to me.

    • @kenwebster5053
      @kenwebster5053 4 года назад

@@HeadwatersKayak I expect it is not efficient due to induced drag losses from 1, being very low aspect ratio. 2. Being so close to the surface, there are pressure losses to the surface. Stern hung rudders always have this problem at the top end and while it isn't stern hung, it is almost the same issue near the surface. It does however avoid getting hung up on rocks etc and not a bad solution to landing through surf.
Rudders & skegs mounted well under the keel and forward of the stern are the most efficient but this is problematic for kayaks, except for retractable skegs. A rudder on a kayak is basically a trimming skeg rather than a steering device as you still have to edge the hull to turn. Kayak rudders tend to be pretty ineffectual without edging or edging the wrong way. All the rudder does is compensate for side slip in adverse conditions so it is really acting as a skeg, improving direction stability.
Basically, the longer and deeper a rudder is, the more efficient it is and the more effective small deflections are for it's area. If it is efficient enough and large enough, it could become a turning device but that would be unusual in kayaks.
