    Cantaloupes here are the best I have eaten in a long time. must be something to do with the heat and dry weather . I wonder how many people know how much strain is on the body, bending over picking, standing up, throw the melons to the trailer. Hats off to Sammi, Ben, and Logan. actually all the gang. Thanks again Logan for letting us help you farm.!!!!! I got tired watching you guys.another good video.

    Oh don't forget to buy yourself a "steering wheel table" for the car! haha, I bought one for $10 on Amazon. Get it from under your seat. Put it up to the steering wheel and it sets there all by itself. Then you can eat your meal without using your lap! I bought a few for gifts and they kinda thought it was a gag gift until they used it and loved it. My niece travels a lot for her job and she uses it to set her laptop on it. She slides the seat back further and she said she loved it.

    It ain't much, but it's honest work.............. Love how you say that all the time Logan. However I'm going to disagree with you........... As far as it ain't much..... Man, it's so much more.
    The food you, and your family grow and produce, the way you pick it when it's ready........... The quality ....... Yes, that's a lot more.
    Subscribed yesterday, only seen like 6 or 8 videos so far. BUT they are all quality products, family, and full of love............
    I actually work for a Major Food Store chain. Almost 19 yrs now. And even though they strive for the best possible fresh produce, and everything else they sell...............
    It doesn't come close to what I've seen here. Even though all divisions purchase from local suppliers as they can, it's just not like what you guys have. Picked early to help reduce shrink, so it's nice, but............ Is it really ripe? Example......... When you was picking those cantaloupes you was looking for color. Yup they was mostly all ready. Hell, I could almost smell them as you was picking them. Last time I bought a store melon it was green. Had to let it sit for some time to get ripe. By the time it was ripe, well it had been picked to long and I ended up tossing it out.
    SO......... when you say it ain't much........ Yeah, I disagree. You're giving high quality, fresh picked, ripe and ready to enjoy food. So just remember the real service you guys are providing............
    Also just a little note..... As I said I work for a grocery company. Semi retired now, floral dept, but I also work in the produce dept. And being 63 yrs old I do know what fresh, ripe, and ready produce is. And it's not something you have to hold on to for a week to be able to eat it.

    When I was young I had a delicious slice of cantaloupe. As I bit into it, I felt a crunch. I looked down at my teeth marks on the melon, and there it was.... half of a large beetle. And PTSD was born.

    Thank you! The opening had me wondering if you knew any traditional work-songs lol They say it makes the work go faster, and brings extra strength for lobbing melons great distances :) Maybe Ben would enjoy singing one for everybody? (just making trouble lol) I wonder what a load of water costs these days? Is he bringing 6,000 to 8,00 gals. a load? Thanks again Logan!

  • @HalbertS-wt5hr

    Melons are such a feast or famine. When it's hot they all seem to ripen at once, then if you get a cool night everything stops and they're not as sweet.
    With the climate changes we're experiencing I notice the date of first frost has been getting later in the year for the northeast US, so better for growing things like melons and don't have to worry as much about pumpkins getting frost damage in the field before Halloween.

  • @jimsingleton3790

    Hi guys, Donna here. So I'm a gardener and found out from the vegee boys, that they cut off all water to their tomatoes when they start to ripen. Do you guys do that as well?

    • @HalbertS-wt5hr
      @HalbertS-wt5hr 2 года назад

      That is a common recommended practice, and also especially with cantaloupe. If water starts going into the melon when it is almost ready to pick it will dilute the solids and make it less sweet and less flavorful.
      If you carefully taste a cantaloupe you will often notice that it sweeter at the bottom end than near the stem. That is because water enters via the stem, and the stem end will be "diluted" first, so less sweet.
      With tomatoes, irrigation close to ripening can also cause cracking, so that is why you cut off the water,

    I grew Athena variety this year and twenty hills produced 108 very good melons ,,,last year 20 hills produced 212 good melons. But they were a different variety I think they were ambrosia

    • @HalbertS-wt5hr
      @HalbertS-wt5hr 2 года назад +1

      Ah yes, Ambrosia, they have the most unique almost tropical flavor. Customers loved them once they tasted them.
      They also had a unique appearance, both the shape and the skin netting. But that was many years ago that I grew Ambrosia; moved on to more modern disease resistant varieties. I still think if you can produce a good commercial crop of Ambrosia a strong following could be developed for direct marketing.

    • @bobbygreen2291

      @@HalbertS-wt5hr they were sweet and tasted good but were very soft meated , unlike the Athena we grew this year which were very firm inside
