I have done this hike, Vernal and Nevada Falls, several times and it has never failed to thrill me. I have told others about it and directed them to some RUclips videos. But from now on I am going to use your video to inspire people. I find it the best for imparting the wonder of this hike, showing the optional routes, and giving useful tips. Thank you.
I have been able to hike this trail 3 times in my life. When I was 11, 18, and 46. 46 would be the last time, I was able to take the kids on this trail, but knees decided it would be the last time I would or could climb these stairs. It's a beautiful trail, wonderful video.
Excellent video. Hiking to Vernal and Nevada is my all-time favorite hike. Over the past 40 years or so, I have hiked to the top of Vernal 16 times and to the top of Nevada 7 times, most recently in 2019. I wish it could have been more, but that's how life goes. When I was younger, I would go up the Mist Trail all the way to Nevada (the short/steep route up the talus slope), but now my preferred method is Mist Trail to Vernal, Clark Point Cut-off Trail (and stopping at the viewpoint halfway up to look down at Vernal), John Muir Trail to Nevada, then back down the John Muir. Also, I just read that the Yosemite Conservancy raised something like $20 million for trail improvements in Yosemite and that about $5 million will be allocated to the Mist Trail. The granite steps need attention (slippery, as you mentioned, and many of the steps are too tall), the guard rails need repair (damage from last winter's heavy snowfall) and probably lengthening. I haven't seen a project description yet, but I am interested in the exactly what they plan to do.
Wow, this video of The Mist Trail in Yosemite National Park is amazing! The stunning views and waterfalls make the hike worth it. The tips provided are very helpful for anyone planning to hike this trail. I can't wait to visit Yosemite National Park and experience this trail myself!
This is a great breakdown of the Mist Trail hike(s)! I’ve done it twice, including a Half Dome summit at 60 years old and 10 permit applications. I would add that Spring time is optimal to see the waterfalls in all their glory. The cables don’t go up on Half Dome until late May. Pro Tip: if you do not score the permit for the cable climb, people have been know to wait at Sub Dome and kindly ask folks coming up if they have and extra permits (known as permit jumping) that you can tag along on. Sometimes hikers in their group drop out. THERE WILL BE A RANGER AT SUBDOME CHECKING PERMITS. If this works for you, be sure and offer to pay for the permit and a nice IPA 🍺
@@matthewstorm5188 Another great hike! Did this one also in late June of ‘22. You get that reverse view at the top of the valley. We also ran into some decent snow on the trail and could’ve used some micro spikes, but we managed without them…. 😊
Hi Travel SzN 👋😊 !! Thanks for this great guide, good to have the options so well explained. Wonderful video shots throughout 🎥….. 💦💦👩🏼🤝👨🏻⛰️ ☀️ !! Thanks also for all the links in the description 👍 !! Have a great week, cheers, Don 🙋♂️ !
Thank you for this video; this was perfect prep for my first visit to Yosemite and for taking a hike rather than a motorised tour. I did the longer version, up to the top of Nevada falls; so I loved Vernal falls but loved Nevada even more and recommend it to anyone considering it. Maybe it was the longer walk / hike that I wanted, the fewer people or just the fact it is so spectacular from that elevation. I started around 7:45/8:00 in the middle of last month and it was busy. After Vernal though it gets much quieter. A waterproof is useful but not necessary if it's sunny; near Nevada there's a fall you have to walk through and on the way down I didn't bother and was dry in 10 minutes. If you're thinking of hiking to Nevada I HIGHLY recommend it. You can do it in trainers / sneakers, a lot of people did but there are some sharp stones. It also isn't easy, like the video says; from the very bottom I saw people making a real effort. It gets easier later but like she says none of this is super easy but it is very rewarding. Oh final thing, if you have big feet (size 14 US), be careful, I nearly went feckin backwards twice by Vernal falls! It was gorgeous though and there's no waterfall like it in the UK so am very glad I went.
@TravelSzN Hi Steph. I enjoyed your video. thank you. i’ve done many of those hikes. but I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis and was starting to be impaired, I took one more trip to hike some favorite Yosemite. I did happy Isles foot bridge and then passed on the trail instead of trying the stairs. about five minutes into your video you talk about an area that you say is one of the most dangerous areas on the trail - steep drop, people fall and die. amusingly that was the first spot on the trail where I had real trouble. I was hiking along with difficulty but OK and then suddenly it was too much for my damaged nervous system and I swerved without control and almost went over the drop. i managed to hit the ground about 2 feet from the edge. I was hiking solo so nobody would’ve known what happened. my friends back at the lodge would’ve missed me.
I'm so glad you were safe from going over the edge and made the decision to turn back around! Your friends would definitely miss you! Thanks for sharing your story!
Awesome! Thank you for your comment! And have an amazing time in Yosemite! May and June are my favorite months to hike the Mist Trail (because you usually get misted from the waterfall more in those months)!
My favorite place in all of Yosemite, the mist trail. Park closed due to snow and flooding, this has been a crazy winter, we're going to break records.
Thank you for the video. Very helpful in determining what options to take since I have a 10 year old son. The option going through Clark point is what we will do
Just hiked the mist and Nevada on saturday. My Legs are starting to feel better😂😂😂 There was ice on the stairs while I was there. Pretty scary. Those steps are steep and not the same size. Some steps are small and easy to climb, Some are knee height and a big step is needed to climb up lol. Very draining as it was my first hike or active activity in years. I now know what I need for next times visit
I'm glad you had a safe hike! Yep those stairs are rough! I haven't tried the hike in freezing conditions, but I bet the stairs get even more slippery. Was there a lot of water coming down Vernal Fall when you hiked it?

Hi! We’ll be visiting (1st time) Yosemite on 1st week of Dec 2024. In terms of shoes, do you think we can survive Mist trail by just wearing Adidas Ultraboost or Nike Vomero?
Amazing break down! What time do you recommend first time hikers to make their way to the trail? Also, do you know around what time there isn’t any fog in the morning?
Have a great time on the hike! If it's your first time doing this hike, just be careful and take your time on the granite steps as you get close to Vernal Fall - they can be slippery! If you want to avoid the crowds I'd try to get to the trailhead before 8AM. If you don't mind lot of people hiking around you, the trail is the busiest between 10AM and 3PM. The fog conditions in the valley change a lot depending on air, stream, and ground temperatures, so I can't give a definite answer on what time fog lifts. Some days there isn't any fog at all. Have fun in Yosemite!
Would it be a bit easier to turn right instead of going straight, eliminating the stairs and loop of Option 2? Would that eliminate the railed section with the steep drop-off?
Hi Debi - you could completely skip the stairs portion of the Mist trail by turning right at the junction a little ways past the footbridge (John Muir Trail to Clark Point). There are more switchbacks and the route is definitely safer than the mist trail steps, but if you go that route up and down, you miss seeing Vernal Fall up close and personal. The John Muir Trail to Clark Point is more of a forested trail, and once you get higher up you get views looking out around the valley, but you don't really see Vernal Fall from that trail (unless you start hiking down to the top of Vernal fall from Clark Point).
Is this hike possible for those who haven't hiked? Are there any dangerous factors like bears, wolf or any kind of animals that harmful ? Can a person finish this hike in 1 day? How long it take for you with this hike?
Hey, thanks for the video! Gonna visit Yosemite in ten days, together with three friends! Do you recommend hiring a guide for this hike? Or is it one that we could easily do alone? Thanks in advance!
Hi - this is a really popular hike and the trail is pretty easy to follow to the top of Vernal Fall, so I do not think you need a guide. You will definitely see lots of other people out there on the trail. Some people have a harder time following the trail when they get to the top of Vernal Fall. If you can download the Alltrails app, it is really helpful in following along to see where the trail goes. Have a nice time on your hike, make sure you pack lots of water, and stay safe! :)

Here is the link for more info on that trail (I have these in the video description too): www.alltrails.com/trail/us/california/vernal-falls-and-clark-point-via-mist-and-john-muir-loop
I'll be going to Yosemite in November for my 60th birthday, and (weather permitting) wanted to hike the Mist Trail. Im a beginner though, so i think hiking to the footbridge would be good. I'm thinking maybe the hike to Vernal Falls too, but a bit nervous about it. Can you recommend some good hiking shoes that I could buy?
Have a great time in Yosemite! There are a lot of decent hiking shoes out there - if you are prone to rolling your ankles/have weaker ankles, I'd recommend hiking boots with some ankle support. Make sure you have thicker socks that go above your boots as well. And try going on some walks for a few weeks before your trip so your shoes are broken in/more comfortable when you are hiking. I usually buy my hiking boots 1/2 size up from my normal shoe size, but check dimensions before buying because some brands make the shoes larger or smaller :) I have a pair of these that I love: amzn.to/3Pq5WBi I also have a pair of these, which have nice traction on rocks, but don't have the same ankle support: amzn.to/46hZnr8

Hello! Have a nice time in Yosemite! I am very sorry for this delayed response - if you already visited the park, I hope you had a wonderful time! For first time hikers/National Park visitors to Yosemite, I'd recommend the Lower Yosemite Falls Loop and the Cooks Meadow boardwalk. Mirror Lake would also be a great one - all of these hikes are in the valley, pretty popular trails that are relatively flat.
Do I need a permit or anything to hike this trail? I live in la and want to take a drive sometime maybe this week to hike up and see the waterfalls. Just not sure if driving up there last min would be fine
Sorry for the delayed response! No permit required to hike from this trailhead to the base of subdome (you can see Vernal Fall, Nevada Fall, etc). If you wanted to go to the top of half dome, you would need a permit to get past subdome. You just need to pay to enter the national park - more info here: www.nps.gov/yose/planyourvisit/fees.htm#entrance-passes
Hello! So I want to know more about the easy way-via footbridge. Will the directions show it? I can’t seem to find Mist trail via Footbridge in my Alltrails app😬
Are you talking about a half dome permit? You need to enter the lottery system for half dome permits. You do not need a specific permit just to hike to Vernal Fall, Nevada Fall, etc on the Mist Trail.
Upper or lower Yosemite fall? Upper Yosemite fall is much more strenuous than the mist trail to Vernal Fall, and lower Yosemite fall hike is much easier. 😄
Glacier Point was once an active glacial area, and the panoramic views of half dome and the big U-shaped valley seen from Glacier Point are evidence of past glacial activity as well. A little more info here: www.nps.gov/yose/learn/nature/tiogaglaciers.htm
I went today and MY CALVES WERE HURTING SO BADLY! ( includes feet) When you get to the stair part there's gonna be a mist of water coming at you but then...SUDDENLY IT RAINED?! (also thunder)....... I just went to vernal falls tho. Also its a 1/2 hour walk so.....6/28/23
Wow! We were on Mist Falls Trail at the same time as you! We started back down from the very top of Vernal Falls at the first sound of thunder. How long did you wait for the shuttle? We ended up walking to Curry for the shuttle because there's parking at Curry (not at the Mist trail head) and people get off the shuttle to get their car at Curry, making room for others. Happy Hiking!!!
Yosemite means "killers or murderers" I would never ever go here there are so many disappearances happen here...very dangerous place. However you cannot deny it's beauty.
Don’t let that negativity deny you the majestic natural beauty that is a one of a kind bestowed to us. Keep your feet grounded. Enjoy those trails and waterfalls and wildlife. Go with others that can enjoy it with you and keep safe.
This is the best video about the trail without being constantly interrupted by narrator's personal appearance. I really enjoyed it.
