Life is neither good nor bad, horrible nor joyous, and depending on the kind of person you are you'd choose to see it in one way or another. Made in Abyss captures this thought perfectly in my opinion, and it shows so much about a person if you ask them what this show is about and they would either say it's torture porn or a beautiful adventure. In a fantastical world where there is promise of beauty and treasure beyond compare to our own it is only fitting that the tragedies that come with this promised gold would be just as great and perilous. This piece of fiction teaches us that to overcome hardships we need to keep our humanity and innocence unharmed, not to look back but continue forwards, if we are to dive deeper into life's tragedies. That is why I think there is meaning behind these characters being, not only children, but consistent in their flaws and motivations and innocence. If they had let the Abyss corrupt them they would have easily succumbed to its horrors, instead the characters choose to continue in their positive outlooks despite the horror they continously face, even the more pessimistic character in Nanachi holds this same kind of naive hope. Not many people can stomach this show but for those who can it truly is a warm darkness filled with both curses and blessings.
I also want to add to the theme. Sunlight in the Abyss is an indicator that the forcefield is where it's most present. The curse and dangerous fauna are more prominent in those areas (which is most of the abyss) the closer you are to the center, allowing for daylight horror. It's the small dim pockets where it's safest, where the curse's effects are minimal to none. This comes to show that light can also be a source of peril while darkness can provide shelter. Thank you for this video. It deserves more views for paying homage to the fantastic background as well as going into its tempting appeal. One of the things I love about this series is the cosmic horror setting. It's as beautiful as it is grotesque; alluring as it is harmful, but mostly mysterious. I read a few comments comparing the Abyss to a pitcher plant and I can see why.
The 1st layer: Like a coastline that marks the boundary of two worlds, on the one side familiar enough to be comfortably explored, on the other littered with the temptations of the unknown depths lurking further down. Descending it is the beginning of curiosity. The 2nd layer: The familiar world is almost literally turned upside down. Descending it means going beyond the known world. The 3rd layer: The Great Fault testing the limits of one's curiosity. Descending it is to take the plunge into the belly of the beast. The 4th layer: The Goblet of Giants, as if make one realise how small they are, how far they've come and how much more there may be. Descending it means a strong potential to commit one's life. The 5th layer: The Sea of Corpses takes you back to something primordial, the edge of life and death. Descending it means the total commitment of one's life and never returning. The 6th layer: The Capital of the Unreturned, where the now forever lost souls must gather - the true underworld of the underworld. The promise of a golden city is akin to the promise of heaven, having now effectively passed through life and into death. The 7th layer: The final and unknown truth, where perhaps the God* of the Abyss awaits. *I find the idea of a "ring of light" mentioned in the 7th layer very interesting. In short, if you believe in an expanding universe, then that universe came from a singularity - a point of pure energy from which all things came. You could quite easily equate such a singularity to God. Some physicists in recent years have supposed that a singularity is not a fixed point and that they may move in circles. As they would presumably do this at something like the speed of light, then a singularity can only be imagined as a ring of light. In other words "God" could be represented as said ring of light in the 7th layer. No idea if this is what Akihito is going for, but like I say, it's very interesting to me.
@@Thesenshin7 Lmao, thanks. Yeah, MiA is quite easily my favourite anime and is shaping up to be just about my favourite story in any medium, from any era (fingers crossed it sticks the landing). I think the concept of the Abyss lends itself to all sorts of metaphors, but as things have developed this is how I see it now. Also I'm a terrible disciple of the caped baldy - my comments are rarely 20 words or less 😂
@@adan3956 I may look into it. Out of curiosity, is it part of Buddhist hell that one can escape by leaving something valuable behind? I know there's something like that in a version of the Japanese underworld and think that may be true of the Abyss (my current theory being that one can escape the 7th layer by leaving behind their Haku, which for Lyza would be Riko, and having gone insane that's why Lyza sent Reg to go get her).
The lesson Made in Abyss try to deliver is that when someone goes into a place of despair, so dark that's it is so agonizing is when you'll realize what are the best things in life are the ones you've had been living before. It's somehow a story inspire by H.P lovecrafts "The Nameless City", a man finding a stairwell that leads far deeper into the pitch darkness carrying a torch, as he descends deeper and deeper his torch went out leaving him in a pitch dark chasm, his two options will be to crawl back into the light or keep on going down trying to find what's there down under. We can say that the Torch = obsession, the world he left is the past he taken for granted, and what lies deeper is a mystery maybe worth discovering or not. When the fire of Obsession vanished and you're left in a darkness, when going to the light of the past is no longer an option, all that's left is the Regret, Homesickness, and the comfort of the Hell you've had before, as you try to keep it together what's left in your former self.
I've become obsessed with this series. I've seen all the anime thrice, and read the manga. Nothing has ever made me feel so much for the characters present.
