How would turbofans cope with mach 2 flight? What about the stress on the engines? How hard the engines work after achieving supersonic speeds would be related to how efficient Overture's airframe is (I think Concorde can maintain mach 2 flight without using the afterburners), correct?

    • @seraphina985
      @seraphina985 3 года назад +1

      Several manufacturers do indeed make flight-tested receivers capable of using signals from multiple constellations. They are generally sold as GNSS (Global Navigation Satelite System) receivers as that is the standard term for any satellite navigation system providing global coverage. Such multi-constellation systems not only benefit from redundancy but can provide superior accuracy in general with more data it's possible to solve for the position at higher precision with the same confidence threshold. This is simply due to the fact that there are a bunch of statistical techniques to detect, quantify and even filter out random noise in ordered data, and these work better the more data points they have to work with. The satellite signals are ordered data about which precisely the sorts of assumptions needed to make those techniques work can be made (Basically these techniques rely on the data having known internal dependencies which satellite navigation data signals do all times are related by the physical constant c for example).

    That's the Symbol for a VORTAC, not a TACAN.

    • @gagerutledge4620
      @gagerutledge4620 5 лет назад

      He labeled it wrong on the right, but he did say "VOR TACAN symbol" or VORTAC, which for military aircraft, can just be used as a typical TACAN station. The VORTAC symbol looks more similar to a TACAN symbol than the other VOR symbols because all a VORTAC station is is a TACAN station with VOR bearing capabilities.

    Really helpful as I’m interested in the engineering and physics too. I like the lighthouse analogy. Loads of explanations made a VOR sound like an NDB otherwise. Also due to the timing we must have precision below 1 degree radial. I was previously thinking the VOR must transmit a different signal on each radial.

      Don't be too sad. There's tons of electrical engineering jobs in the avionics industry. I'm a software programmer for an avionics company and I still get to learn a ton about airplanes and helicopters. I even get to make virtual instrument panels that look and behave like the real thing!

      You can still become an aeronautical engineer if you work for an aerospace company! An electrical engineer is a aeronautical engineer if he/she works with aircraft. In fact, getting an electrical/mechanical degree is generally more recommended than an aerospace degree as it is broader and allows you to find work in more places.

    • @SunnyWu

      There are other systems in place though and they are being used too.

    • @MartyInTheWoods
      @MartyInTheWoods 4 года назад

      Thank you, but I am guessing you were not asked or had a say-so in the financing of the US GPS. Things like this just get decided over the US taxpayers head (or even behind their backs) - some call it the *industrial military complex* en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Military%E2%80%93industrial_complex , which Eisenhower warned early on about: ruclips.net/video/8y06NSBBRtY/видео.html
      Fortunately other countries also have satellites in place.The EU for example has the Galileo system: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Galileo_(satellite_navigation)
      It is accurate down to 0,2m precision! Read who has been and is financing the project at the moment!
      You are welcome :-)

      @VesperTV_ 4 года назад

      US GPS, European Galileo, Russian Glonass, even a chinese one coming up. They're all available at the moment and it's unlikely galileo will turn the light out. (compared to GPS/Glonass). Note that GPS is already preventing usage in some area of the worlds or intentionally reduced precision. Also, they charge you for anything more precise than 20m on ground (that's why sea swimmers are complaining when using smart watch as it doesn't show their path very well :D)

    I don't think the US Air Force would turn off access to the GPS satellites. Civilians have become so dependent on GPS, that it would be a disaster to the US economy to shut it off. It would be a case of 'cutting off your nose to spite your face'

    Back in the old days, we called the VOR unit in the airplane the "VOR display" or simply the "VOR" It was controlled by the right side of the "nav/com" unit. The "CDI' was the needle in the VOR display known as the "course deviation indicator". If it also had a glide slope receiver, the horizontal needle was called the "glideslope". We flew "radials" outbound and the reverse was known as the "course' Short version, "Radial is outbound- course is inbound". The old text books read this way. Some still explain it this way. I agree it's easier.
