I have never craved a tomato this much...
3 words: homegrown salsa. It is absolutely the best
Yes! That is delicious!
My dad always said that ugly tomatoes taste the best. As a tomato expert, eating tomatoes every day I can confirm this.
OHHHH the BLACK BEAUTY TOMATO would be GORGEOUS in a dish...............never had it but NEED one now.
There are a number of heirloom seed exchanges on line that have the seeds... Good luck and please keep us posted!
This channel never fails to remind me of happy memories from back home. Thank you, Dr. Conyers.
(Also, if you ever decide to launch a channel on rocket science, I will be an enthusiastic subscriber.)
Thanks for tuning in! More to come - on food for now!
OUT OF THE MOUTH OF BABIES.... My step Grand daughter was given a tomato that her grandma grew. Her exact words were..."Grandma, that was the BEST tomato I ever ate in my whole life !" She's only seven, but even she knew the difference. She didn't know why , but what she did know was.... "THAT TOMATO WAS THE"BEST TOMATO SHE EVER ATE IN HER WHOLE LIFE" !
1:17
That looks absolutely amazing. Legit had my mouthwatering. Especially when he mentioned having it with cornbread 😋
My family had a 20 acre farm in NJ. I spent the summers working 10 hour days at the large farms picking tomatoes, cucumbers, and peppers... This literally was the most fun time and character forming part of my life.
I also spent a couple summers with my father's family in Bowling Green Va farming tobacco...
I clearly didn't see technology knocking on the door. I always thought that no matter what happened in life, I could always go back to making a living working the farms... Modern machinery and irrational regulations pretty much killed that thought by the mid 90's... Still great experiences and memories.
Amen. I've been mourning the lack of flavourful tomatoes for years. I have to beat the bushes to find decent examples in Western N.Y. . Just the word Hydroponic gives me cold sweats.
There are a lot of heirloom seed catalogues that are a good resource.
NOURISH, alas, retirement has brought us apartment "stress free living". But maybe, just maybe, I can con...err persuade #1 Son to raise your recommended varieties,
@@johnmcnaught7453 do you have a small balcony or landing for a pot or two? Could always prune a plant down for an area with limited space. Just a thought. I'm west of Albany, trying to garden. Some day I'll get it right 😂
Absolutely love the channel, I grew up in the south. Southern California.
Best gardening/produce related video I've seen
This show is why I tried a tomato sandwich. When I heard they eat tomato sandwich with nothing but mayo, salt and pepper I thought that was crazy. This past season I ate countless amount of them.
This makes me want some friend tomatoes as well!
My aunt and uncle own a farm, and they gifted me with some homemade salsa for Christmas once with vegetables from their garden, including peppers and tomatoes. I've never tasted anything so flavorful, and now I can barely stand any commercial tomatoes in part because of that.
Wow this was so informative !
I just had some home grown tomatoes for dinner last night with homemade rye bread and bacon. Best thing I've had in a while.
Now, that's my kind of "mater sandwich."
sounds really delicious!
I sure wish you would bring more content like this, this video brought back memories of my grandparents I long forgotten. Fresh tomato and okra stew. I miss my childhood! Thank you for this video.
Sudani Salad
-Chopped Tomatoes
-Chopped Onion
-Lime juice
-Salt,pepper,cumin,cayenne
-tablespoon or 2 peanut butter,
mix all really well, tastes better if it sits in fridge.
Shaytan Rajeem thank you 👍
I love the content of your channel! Subscribed!
so glad i discovered this channel
I can no longer get tomatoes to set here - our summers are becoming too cool and wet for them to ripen properly. I can get the grape tomatoes to set, but not the full-sized (none have set for the last 4 years). We end up with green tomatoes. Next year I may try putting them in a portable greenhouse to see if we can get them to set. The little ones are delicious, but nothing matches the rich heartiness of the large heirlooms.
here is what zone?
Gates is trying to artificially block the sun, not hard to imagine the dire consequences that would create. Man made famine?
Dude, this is exactly the plot of an aurtur episode that I watched so many years ago and now I finally know the secret!
I live for this
I want to join their table and listen while eating all the tomatoes
Growing up, I used to love tomato sandwiches. I hadn't had one in years, and when I tried one a while back I despised it. Now I realize why. As a kid, our tomatoes came from my grandparents' yard. The ones I've used lately have all come from the grocery store. It's crazy how much of a difference it makes in flavor and texture- store-bought tomatoes are all water, and they fall apart when cut.
I thought I was crazy or something. I couldn’t figure out why tomatoes just weren’t good anymore. When he hit that tomato with the bat my insides started to churn. Killing us slowly but surely
Could you post more videos like this one. I love regenerative agriculture and learning about heirloom foods and recipes from around the world. It’s impossible to talk about food without looking at how that food is produced. It would be fantastic to hear your thoughts and interviews with some big names in Regenerative agriculture plus some new recipes. Going to try okra this year to cook up with the tomatoes, it’s not widely grown in Australia so it fun to try new things and diversify.
Another great video. Thank you.
So glad you like it! Keep watching, much more to come...
Great programming! Grocery store tomatoes are a crime.
This was the first one I saw. I went and watched all your other videos. EVERY episode I enjoyed! Just remember don't put corn in your gumbo! Or water in your stew (my wife learned that from my grandma!) Don't need to tell you good job I hope you know that already.
Thanks! Much more to come!
Woohoo more eps!
Wow, no wonder I hate tomatoes! I never understood how people actually liked tomatoes, but now I see. They taste totally different now. Never knew there was such a big taste difference. Time to research which varieties can be grown in pots to grow in the Spring. Can't wait!
Awesome channel Dr.! I've always wanted to grow maters.
Thanks! Nothing better than a mater sandwich!
Maybe my fav video oh Dr Conyers
Great video
Sigh... I miss homegrown heirloom tomatoes :(. They can be tricky to grow depending on one's location. I had really good luck with Matt's Wild Cherry Tomatoes when living in Houston, TX. They were very prolific and I had numerous volunteers pop up each season. They were so flavorful and sweet! Most of them didn't even make it indoors after being picked :D. I live in an apartment in the frozen tundra now; sadly, the weather isn't conducive to growing tomatoes. Love your channel!
I've also heard of a variety "Chocolate Sprinkles" that is supposed to be delicious. I think you can grow those in containers.
ohhhhh looks sooo great.
Love this ❤️♥️❤️
Watching this while eating a 🔥🔥homegrown heirloom tomato 😊
excellent!
This is something I already figured out on my own. It really is true. "Tomato, Tomato"? That's actually a really bad saying, because the difference that an actually good tomato makes is insane.
That being said:
- I wouldn't call bumpier tomatoes "ugly" by any means. They have more character, but they look good
- There absolutely are good tasting "round" tomatoes as well. Although they are never as intense as the huge bumpy ones, they're always far tastier than the "perfect" (bland) one you are most likely to see in stores. Most of those pretty round tomatoes are relatively small though. Cherry tomatoes and the like.
I'm glad I found this channel. #SCMade
My uncle Todd once grew tomatoes in his front yard. I already kind of liked the tomatoes from restaurants, but I'd never tried homegrown tomatoes. I tried one of his and realized what I was missing.
This video made me crave tomato so much. :D ...Luckily I grow my own on the terrace. ^_^
I live is southern NH, and I live for late July and August so I can get my yearly fix of fresh tomatoes. They are my favorite food. Sadly the growing season here isn’t as long as in southern parts of the US. My pépère grew tomatoes, my dad gardened too, and I’ve always loved those juicy slices sprinkled in some salt!
They are delicious, even if it is only for a brief period of time. Thanks for watching!
I can't stand tomatoes bought in a store but missed them slot. 4 or 5 yrs. ago started growing my own even tho I didn't know zip about gardening (still don't know much but learning) last yr. put in my first heirlooms. Heaven on a vine. This year putting in Cherokee purple.
Left guy, should be PICKING tomatoes not talking about them. 😂
I gotta agree with you, home grown fruit is just the best compared to the preservative-filled junk at the stores. My apple tree has produced around 30-40 apples(It's only about 5 years old), and they're the sweetest apples I've ever tasted. They're full of juice and flavour, too!
Looks delicious! Greetings from Eastern Europe.
Over hear it's a bit easier to get the good stuff, nothing beats the smell of a fresh tomato, it's the best smell in the world.
Agreed!
My dad grows all kinds of tomatoes in our garden and they're all delicious. Nothing like a slice of tomato from the with some salt.
It's been so many years since I had a fresh homegrown tomato! This video makes me want some homegrown tomatos, but unfortunately we can't grow anything where I live because of our environment. Really nice video though.
Have you tried container gardening?
What a great looking gang of tomatoes you folks have down there. I don't know why I watch these vids, it's torture! We get hothouse tomatoes up here all year, like billiard balls.
I keep an eye out for anything edible grown and processed outside any industrial setting. Maybe you can do an episode on the giant flavorless chickens we find in the supermarket. I can buy skinny little chickens from a local producer that taste better than anything that ever found itself smothered in Saran wrap in a Styrofoam tray.
Sounds like The Crusaders playing in the background.
Thanks for watching. There are a ton of heirloom seeds available online. Don't know about chicken varieties but I know you can find chickens too.
I've seen the factory farms in California. They run as lean as cheaply as possible near a desert. I don't understand how it grows in that weather.
I miss heirloom tomatoes! The variety of sweetness and acidity meant for some seriously amazing dishes that were far more complex than when using conventionally grown, store bought tomatoes. The best way to enjoy them though? Right off the cutting board with a little bit of salt-- you're right about that!
"There's only two things that money can't buy, and that's true love and home-grown tomatoes."
Amen!
I mean technically, you do buy homegrown tomatoes, but then you have to put in 2 Months of Work.
Kinda like true love :)
I got tomatoes in my garden 🍅🍅🍅
My brother just said you can hybridize a tomato and a pepper. Is this true? I've home grown jalapenos and bell peppers and the tomatoes at the same time on the back porch and the tomatoes came out exactly the way they were supposed to.
My mom grows tomatoes and okra. Nothing like fresh backyard-to-table fried green tomatoes or stewed okra and tomatoes.
This video has me tripping. I'd do a lot of things w/out dignity to get my hand on a sandwich w/one of those tomatoes in it.
Can someone please explain what are the names of the varieties of the tomatoes showcased here? Because I would love to experiment with them in the kitchen to see if they can do what regular tomatoes can do (ie tomato soup, tomato sauce, ragu ala bolognese, bloody mary, tomato juice, etc.). Or at least get someone like Alton Brown or America's Test Kitchen to fiddle around with them to see what can be done with these absolutely gorgeous tomatoes(Especially the one shown in 00:30 because JESUS that looks delicious)
P.S: Details on any other "ugly" tomato varieties would be much appreciated.
It would've been interesting to test out the differences between homegrown tomatoes and store-bought. Which has more acidity or sweetness? What contributes towards having such distinct flavors? This was a really nice video.
You had me at bacon!
there was a psat passage about this
Where can I get some of those seeds
Rareseeds.com - also check out wild boar farms for some amazing new cross pollination varieties that have astounding colors and great flavor.
I wonder if I can get them to grow here in SE Asia
I bet!
Having grown tomatoes and can confirm this finding, and so can the birds that liked to raid them for their juicy insides.
Oh no! You can try draping netting over them?
If the property manager allowed me to do I would have. So far, my remaining options seem to be to make peace with the birds (specifically with a resident catbird that's responsible for most of the damage) via installing a feeder away from the veggie bed, or hang up some shiny bits to scare them away with harmless, but annoying to birds reflected light. Both I'll have to be really sneaky about.
I eat fish with tomato sauce and carrots
Not entirely true, my relatives once bought seeds of a very watery and tasteless tomatoes. They were literally worse then what you can buy from a store. And sometimes in the stores you can buy very delicious tomatoes.
I never knew any other kind of tomato existed
The names of some of the different varieties are very interesting and usually have an even more interesting story behind them.
I have to score/grade your video a (D-) where's the explanation??? The soil scientist from "Garden in Canada" explained it like this ---- the farmers use EXCESS nitrogen to grow lots and lots of big plants for a huge crop to sell.{name of the game} The excess nitrogen changes the protein structure of the tomatoes and they lose their tangy taste and acidic content. [what would happen to you if you ate 20 BigMac's or 20 Whoopers every day? your structure would change too] Backyard gardeners DO NOT use that much nitrogen to cause a change in the tomatoes protein structure thus they're sweet and acidic and very tasty -- you just don't grow the volume of tomatoes per acre farmer have to.
How does someone get access to homegrown tomatoes if you live in a city, in an apartment, with no space to grow anything? :(
Seed catalogue, roof top or a window sill? Produce truck? Farm market? Hopefully, you have access to one of these. If not, canned tomatoes can be tasty too.
Grow them in 5 gallon buckets on your balcony. Hopefully a southern exposure.
Carlos Gonzalez lol what balcony?
This is like food porn for me.
I effing love tomatoes!..with salt...*drools*
Finally one episode that doesn't include absurd killing of animals!
You are obviously not Southern.
I have noticed nearly every part of the country has it GREAT tomatoes but in every case it's the same geneticly altered "growers" tomatoes.
Farmers can't afford a year like I've had this year losing all my Cherokee Purple and German Johnson. But Yellow Brandywine has managed to give up fine tomatoes as it does every year. When I have give any of the above tomatoes to friends they realized how food has suffered thru commercial growing.. Try old school pole beans, Red potatoes and thick sliced of real tomatoes for a fine meatless meal.
I'll be looking for that black beauty. Yummy!
The Seed Savers Exchange is a great resource for heirloom seeds of all kinds: www.seedsavers.org
creole tomatoes from Louisiana are not very good at all... I live here..compared to midwest tomatoes... they are acutually horrible... the dirt down here is very sandy red clayish... enough said.
this may all be true but store tomatoes are cheap and edible. growing your own isn't an option for most people.
Before we moved to our farmstead my wife and i grew tomatoes year around in our apartment it can be done its not as expensive as you think and can be done with a decent size flower pot a little bit of plant food and a uv light
You are absolutely right and fresh vegetables are healthy eating.
I enjoy the show (it helps I'm from Louisiana), but the housee sounds like a robot. Come on man, relax...
