I looked up the reviews for that tool kit, most of the positive reviews are like "Bought for my son for his birthday/christmas, came quick!" or (my personal favorite) "bought for when the neighbor asks to borrow tools, so he doesnt damage my good set"
Love how the reviews are a mix of people giving 5 stars that have no idea how to use the tools, or people who should’ve known better and are now leaving one star.
You should use this kit (and only this kit) on your next project car. Like an engine rebuild.
I don't see those ratchets lasting very long. I don't know if you could finish an actual project with that tool set.

I keep that exact set in my truck at all times. Tools are extreamly cheap and quality is poor but it is completely inclusive and id rather have crappy tools on the side of the road than no tools. I would never use these in my shop but as a cheap tool set to keep in a vehicle full time its perfect. Nothing worse than being stranded roadside with an easy problem to fix and no tools.

Do you think you could successfully remove 6 lugnuts with that kit? Could you remove an alternator and replace it without breaking any of those 'tools' ? For $100 you could buy a Craftsman 234pc set at Lowes that would be far better. Sure Craftsman is not what they used to be, but better by far that that no-name set.
@@TD_YT066 i have them in the back of my 4runner. I have used them to change an alternator worked fine. I used the lug wrench included with the spare tire when i remove lug nuts on the side of the road, not a tool kit. My point was yes their shit tools but they work in a pinch and have for me before.
@@TD_YT066 I have that Craftsman set. The case is a brilliant design however you should try to only open it on flat surfaces. The wrenches could use a few more sizes and the sockets are pretty bad in terms of finish but never broke one or thought the tolerances are out of wack. The main problem with the kit is the ratchets are crap, especially the 3/8 and 1/4. The good news is you can go into Lowes for free replacements and just grab the slightly nicer versions of each which are actually adequate. Otherwise a perfect kit, partially because the drawers actually lock in place unlike other brand's similar boxes. Great for the yard.
Who change alternator on sideway? Do you also have spare camshaft in trunk?
it is a (cheap) test light, you ground it with your finger on the metal plate on the top end of the screwdriver which makes the fuse to light up ;)
It's actually a neon bulb. And I strongly suggest you throw that in the bin. Its purpose is to test if 120-240v lines are live. And the only thing protecting your finger from that live wire is a tiny resistor. Yea, they're a serious hazard.
@@BenDeSwert666 it depends, our (pretty old^^) one has a normal light bulb / "glow wire" (if thats how it´s called, I´m not sure in english) in it. At least in germany (230V/50hz, EU norm I think?^^) nearly everyone i know has one of those laying around somewhere... the good thing is, most just use them as a tiny screwdriver ^^
But yeah it´s not really save, totally agree on that. Even though it "just" hurts a bit / not deadly or somethink, ~30€ for a real one are well used.
I´d say the set they got was made for europe (230V, metric sockets)

@@SilencerPB Yea, my thoughts exactly. I once got zapped by one of those. The resistor failed into a dead short, sending 240v into my finger. Since then I don't use them anymore. My trusty fluke will show me the power 😁

the screw driver with the "fuse" in it is a 120v~ tester; really simple tester, you are the grounding:P the light I think is neon or similar(think 80's radioshack project stuff)... doesn't shock you:P
I've got a test light from Snap-On that works the same way, as long as you're touching something metal it'll work
This tools set are great for kids. I bought similar for a 5 year old. He can do stuff around house and is very proud of owning tool box.
as a child I got a good gernam tool kit (sure cause I´m german, and german tools were the best). don´t frustrate your kids with chines trash, buy a real one!

In college, I had a much smaller tool set of similar quality. Received as a gift, probably cost $15 at Walmart. Kept it in the trunk of my car. One day I went out to the street and found my car had been broken into. Tool set was gone. How much do you think I missed it? 🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂
Would've loved to see the face of the thief when he tried to pawn that toolset and was laughed out of the pawnshop.

I bought a $5 3/8 set from Walmart about 10 years ago when I had no tools. The ratchet gave out rather quickly but the sockets are still holding up today.
This is absolutely hilarious. My dad got this for my first set of tools… I was working at a powersports shop and in the first 2 hours on my first day I broke both ratchets, the screwdriver ratchet, 8mm,10mm+12mm sockets, and tweaked some of the Allan wrenches. Literally left me unable to do my job on the first day. That was a BAD LOOK. I just went and got a simple craftsman set that evening and that has worked out for me. At least for hand tools.

Back in the 80’s I bought my first tools from a surplus store called Hood’s near my house. They were cheap tools made in China or Mexico. Within 5 years I think all but a couple of screwdrivers had broken. So then I bought Craftsman tools. I still have them, but the few screwdrivers from Hoods have since broken.
I bought a mexico set for the exact reason of welding them to broken taps or bolts and unscrewing
I managed to weld them to the insulating copper but they just wouldnt weld to steel

Speaking for all bike assemblers, we would not use that tool set to assemble anything. That kit costs less than half of the bike repair stand that holds the bike for assembly.

10:00 that is a test light for 120-240 volt ac outlets. You touch the metal end of it with your finger and it lights up. Never seen them in US before.
Bought this few years ago minus zip ties, toolbelt and gloves, as emergency tools at my cottage .. for 65 bucks .. it so great even locals who would steal rotting log if not nailed do not want to touch it, yet it helped here and there when i did not had proper toolkit in car.
that's why I keep a set of hyper tough tools under the backseat of my truck, nothing too expensive if they ever get stolen, but much better quality than this trash when I do need them in a pinch.
Thieves would come back to you and say: This is the worst tool set i have ever stolen, just take it back!

@@CommodoreFan64 Yes, I usually have my nice set in a car, but ... I live in city center of one of Europe's capital. Parking space is a premium, up to recently trucks were not uncommon, there were none in a city. Heck only 6 f150 in country were operated without plates in surface mine up to quite recently. Also i haul my 2 wolfdogs a 2 largish cats around too :D Not to mention Wife, who was culprit in buying these anyway
I'm very lucky that my dad is a career vehicle mechanic so when I (inevitably) started doing my own wrenching, he passed a load of his older tools that were basically spares for him, so I've always had a good collection of professional grade tools and so I can appreciate why high quality tools matter.
The "Test Light" works when you put the flat part in a live plug or anything with eletricity and put your finger on the metal butt of the tool making the ground, and then, if there's eletricity your fuse should light.
Jared must have some amount of toque in his hands to twist the quality made level like that 😂.
I once got a $10 soldering kit off amazon and thought okay the iron will be handy to for mobile repairs when I don't want to take my good one. first time I went to use it, dang thing got WHITE hot. And i mean, scary WHITE HOT. It was insane. I unplugged it, let it cool, and smashed it to bits so it'd never be used again lol
A real "Professional Toolset" should come with a stack of 5-10mm sockets... cuz you always lose or misplace your 10mm and that is 90% of the bolts on some vehicles... LOL

I find it funny that you guys say the most common ratchet is a 3/8s, maybe in the US but as a self certified backyard mechanic for roughly 16years I only recently needed to buy a 3/8s ratchet and the only reason was to remove plugs from a nissan 🤣 never needed it otherwise. 1/2” covers most basis for pretty much anything outside of the US from 13mm up and 1/4” for smaller 🤷🏻♂️
I love getting these tool kits as gifts. I use these tools for welding to broken parts I need to remove and dont need the tool to return to the box. THe sockets work really well when you have a bolt with a rounded head you just find the socket slightly smaller and hammer it on take it off.
I buy the sockets from cheap no name sets like this by the rusty bucketful from the junk shop cabin at my local scrapyard. They're perfect sacrificial sockets for hammering onto or welding onto something.

I have this set and I need to say. There were some tools in it that really helped me that I didn’t had in other tool boxes like an magnetpen. Some sockets that fit on other ones and screwdriver to socket.
For a spare box it’s Handy to have so you can move on. Especially in the evening

10:04 in german we call that a "phasenprüfer". the grounding is from the user itself I think, you pop one end in a power outlet, touch the metal end with your finger and if there is current on there, the inside lights up. Those are so common that I got like, 4 of those in my workshop because they are part of pretty much every screwdriver set. Not much danger either because the current that goes through that tiny lamp is so small you don't even notice, great tool for checking for current though.

As someone who travels, fixing CNCs for a living for a CNC machine builder (I’m around 200 flights in 2021 for work). I can say that this case would make it MAYBE 1 flight. I tend to go through a toolbox every year or 2, and they’re around $280 just for the box. I’d give the rest of the tools 1-2 uses each (at most) before they break.

Wow this brings back memories! I brought one exactly the same off of eBay when I was 13 and wanted to start wrenching 😂 I can confirm the smell was very potent . The 1/2in ratchet felt like a 32 tooth 🤣

1/4 for light use and 1/2 for heavy use cause they put more meat on the 3/8 to make it a half inch to compensate to the bad quality . Be interested in trying them out.
That set is for your overpriced airport rental car. That would of explain the 'to-go' handle... LOL
That is a good set to take to a parts yard without worrying about losing/breaking something. It's light, so you can walk the 3 miles to the aisle where the car is you need parts for. It's cheap, so you won't mind using things for jobs they aren't intended to. It's comprehensive, in case you find other parts you weren't intending on picking up, but the opportunity has presented itself and you're willing to risk the busted knuckle or five to get that sweet instrument cluster or aftermarket set of projector headlights. Score.
please remember not everyone has the money to spend on expensive tools, perhaps this is cheap enough to provide someone with a decent enough beginners set to start them off with.

The point is, these are just not worth buying, you can do better for about the same price. The 225 "Mechanic's Tool Set" from harbor freight will run you $145 and serve much better, leaving $20 to buy a hammer, set of nails, and a couple of odds and ends.
If you have NO tools and just want something for around the house, the $40 130 piece tool kit from harbor freight will probably serve you as well or better than this.
I have a Stanley set I bought from Walmart for $50 over 10 years ago. Way fewer items than this, but a better selection of what will actually be used. Not a single tool in it has bent or broken and it has been through abuse. I have done thousands of dollars worth of repairs with it. All the blue finish wore off, but the tools are still perfect. Love that set. There is a difference between the cheapest tools and the minimum viable product for doing automotive work. This would be a fun set for a kid getting into taking stuff apart, but they would grow out of it very quickly and none of it will be appreciated long term. I definitely get where you are coming from. $50 was a lot for me. However, a better investment than this set really.
You can get better value and the adage of "less is more" holds true. Zip-ties shouldn't be included in a tool count.
There's huge gap between snap-on, knipex, etc and this crap. Money is better spent at any hardware store.
I agree, but spending even 21 cents on a tool you aren't going to use is money wasted.
For the same price as this kit, you could go to your neighborhood hardware store and buy name brand tools that you will actually use and skip the junk that you won't, and many of the tools might outlast you.
I'd love to see Tavarish and Jared each take $160 to the hardware store to make their own tool kits based on what they think they'll need for most projects and see what they come up with.
Cheap tool kit we bought at one time, one of the spanners was marked with the wrong size (12mm marked 13mm from memory)

I got this kit (or it's badge-engineered cousin) as part of a swag bag a few years ago. It has served me well for minor household and wrenching tasks.

I have a dirt cheap socket set that came free with a tool bag I bought a few years ago. First time I put much torque through the extension bar it actually twisted the square drive off of the end. I keep them around for those times you need to smash an undersized socket over the end of a stuck bolt.
So I should feel scared if my airline pilot shows up dragging this tool set onto the plane.
Got a pretty darn good kobalt mechanics tool kit for Xmas a couple years ago. It was probably $0.75 per piece but has 12 point and 6 point sockets plus shallow and deep well. Only complaint is relatively small number of wrenches. But overall a good value. Allows me to do most minor repairs on my car. For more complex or high torque repairs I need extra stuff but overall it's pretty solid for a ~$200 kit. Only real complaint is the channels the drawers slid in and out off. The drawers are a bit to heavy and bind a bit
I got that same kit on the after christmas clearance for $75. It was a pretty solid kit for the money. I've been kicking it around for a couple years now for projects I don't want to risk my good tools on and for stuff that my kids can use without me caring. So far nothing has broken and it has all held up well. Only real gripe are the case latches are utterly worthless. Things just fall off all the time. Though being fair I didn't expect the case to last this long and yet here it is.
The test light/screw driver is standard european fare. You ground it through you by touching the metal nub on the back end while touching the blade to whatever's powered. Yeah, i don't trust a 21 cent chinese one of those :)

The screwdriver with the light, in the Netherlands we call IT a current seeker. You put a finger on the metal end of the handel the other end in a socket. When the light lights up you have current.
Wonder if “Snap-Off Tools” is trademarked already.

Perfect tool set for a budget car restoration. Find one cheap beater, pick up a harbor freight paint gun or just rattle can spray paint, crappy tools to reassemble the car and see how far you can get :D

It would be a perfect gag gift for your professional mechanic friend. Or it would actually be something to give a kid a set of tools to play with especially if you want to keep him/her out of your tools. Give it to you little ones to learn what they are, how to use them and or take care of them. They can use them, throw them around, lose them and it wouldn't hurt your feelings any.
The scary thing is that this tool kit has some good reviews on Amazon?!?! Makes me think twice about reading any reviews on there
It's the toolkit for the apprentice. Remember - a bad tradesman always blames his tool.
It would be interesting to see if you could do a $170 job with it, like repairing a wing and replacing a headlight. Or doing something like adding accessories to a car followed by a service as well?
Compare each toolkit as a series, see which will do the most overall general tasks.
I bought this kit for work, I was literally building submarines like seawolf class subs.... I didn't use much out of it and I paid 99$ lol

looks like a starter kit i'd give my kid when they move out since you know most of it is going to get lost but gives them the basic things to handle light house work before they call dad to come fix it.
That testlight thing at 10:00 is a line voltage tester, this is highly common here in Germany. It is known to be junk but even electricians are using these to the day. We often call it Lügenstift. (Lügen = lies; Stift = pen)
If I look in the past we did not make 3/8" tools here in eastern Germany and maybe the complete eastern bloc. At least I have not seen any old sets. So till today many people use a combination of 1/4" and 1/2" tools. So do I.
I always recommend to buy and use older tools. You can safe a lot of money on flea markets.
I would really like to know if that hot glue gun wors for you or just burns to the ground. Would not wonder if they just change the style of the plug but not the heater element so fit for 120/240V.
I think you should buy the cheapest car non running and use this tool key to get it running.
Also do some maintenance like oil change and breaks
10:01 These are pretty old ways for testing for voltage. Usually used for AC systems, mains, etc, often have a resistor and a neon bulb/incandescent bulb in and you touch the thing you want to test with the tip and you put your thumb on the contact on the end
The thing at 9:45 or so is a "Phasenprüfer" aka phase checker.
It works with your body as ground. So you put one part on 230VAC and the Metal part on the back you put your thumb or finger.
And they kinda work somewhat...
Step 1: buy 2 more kits
Step 2: give one to each of the car trek guys to only use for roadside repairs during the next car trek journey
Step 3: entertainment/profit
Here in Germany, most car workshops use 1/2 and 1/4 inch ratchets. The 3/8 is not that common here anymore. As Compromise for space and weight saving, I have 3/8 Rachet Set in my "Crash Kit"
I propose a cheap tool set challenge. Attempt to do a repair using the cheapest tool set you can find. I have been in situations where i had to use even cheaper tools than that to do an emergency repair. Have you ever came across those silver painted bronze wrenches that bend under any load? I think you guys could have a bit more fun with this!
Here in finland 3/8" sockets are not a thing.. I mean if you want them you can buy those from pro shop or order online, but mostly we use 1/4" and, 1/2" tools and those are commonly available.
The electric check screw driver works by putting it in the power outlet and put you finger on the metal end. If the light comes one that's the power, if not then it's the ground wire. Used that all my life and never heard of accidents.

I went for the cheapest banjo and electric guitar on the amazin' (free shipping) And yeah.. took apart the electric one and it still had sawdust from the assembly steps. The banjo.. decent quality. If only I knew how to play banjo.

i got a socket set off ebay for £35 when i was 18 im now 30 and all 3 wrenches broke this year so i had 12 years of use out of them i still use the sockets and accessories that come with the set i have repaired all my cars with them from engine and gearbox to brakes and suspension one socket snapped when i attempted to undo the wheel nut when i had lost the tyre wrench but it does the job you can go cheap and build a better collection over time for £35 and watching a few youtube videos i saved my self thousands in repair bills

the screwdriver with the light bulb in it is a phase tester for power sockets and here in germany it is very rare to get a 3/8 inch ratchet in a tool set. i am a mechanic myself for commercial vehicles but that has nothing to do with it and i have never owned or used a 3/8 ratchet myself :)
You can buy a high quality ratchet set for $20-30, a couple perfectly good screwdrivers from harbor freight for a few dollars, a nice hammer for maybe $10 and a box cutter for $4 more. $50 and you can do everything this kit can with tools you know won’t break
At my work we don't use 3/8 inch drive sockets. Most is done with half or even 1/4 inch 😛

First the tester with the ligh is for 230 volts we use a lot in greece and works when you put it to the live of the socket, you tuch it and it grounds from your body and lights up second yea.. If you dont see a 3/8 racthet its fine they sell these in uerope too and for some reason i dont see a 3/8 in the half cheap sets
I got this as my “first tool kit” bc it was cheap and had everything I needed to start. Still have well over half the actual tools 3+ yrs later

I have exactly the same kit amd it is quit usful (I have acces to proper garage with good quality eqipment but it is great to quick fix in the drive way)
