I'm still learning about cyber security, but from my understanding there is no 'Magic Bullet', only risk mitigation. One can only make a system more secure and private, but as the field is rapidly evolving what is secure today may not be tomorrow.

There are absolute 100% secure magic bullets but these can only be achieved by controlling EVERYTHING yourself,

there exists barely any libre wireless hardware so say gbye to your wifi.
endusers want wifi so channels like techlore that try to be user friendly serve only to spread awareness.

There is no perfect solution no, but there are ways to make your life more secure, such as more complex passwords, 2fa, not using 1 device for everything, not using personal info for everything, and keeping up to date with news on stuff like social media leaks and yt channels like this lovely one!

I’ll just leave my opinion here. Leaving all of the privacy and security stuff behind I’ve not heard someone talk so much sense in what feels like years. Thank you for making this video and hope it helps a lot of people.
Gotta say that it really is hard to find privacy focused RUclipsrs that can be trusted. As far as I’m concerned, there’s a fine line between channels that fill you in on the fine details vs instil fear.
Channel that comes to mind is Rob Bradman Tech. Dude seems extremely knowledgeable, and I don’t doubt that he is, but hate that he tries to sell his own hardware VPN and phones that he installs custom roms on.
Also makes a lot of those wild and unproven claims pretty frequently so I’m glad you’re more straightforward without pushing fear with “evil Facebook” or whatever it may be.
I rolled my eyes when i saw this thumbnail, but im glad i watched it. It was very informational.
As much as I used to enjoy The Hated One, I feel his channel is fragmenting the community a lot with the extremism and bad takes. Techlore has always had a very level-headed approach to Security and Privacy and the understanding that AVERAGE users do not want to solve 8 CAPTCHAs on Tor just to Google a dog breed their Aunt Sally had.
That would be the quickest way to discourage average users from embracing privacy, which is the opposite of what we need these days.
The more people we can educate about Security and Privacy (even if it's just a little), the higher the chance that they become intrigued, do their own research, come to their own conclusions, and hopefully can then spread the message to other average folks, snowballing the effect. I feel Techlore has always had similar intentions at heart and that's what's so great about this channel. 👍🏻

I also want to add, particularly about this video, the approach on “avoid extremes”, “search for different sources” and “promote a health and thoughtful” discussion on any given subject is of utmost importance. More so in this day and age where many subjects are sort of prohibited to speak about. So, all in all, it should not apply only to technology and privacy. Cheers, mate.
I love hearing when privacy and security advocates emphasize threat modeling and basing your actions on what YOU think YOU need, not everyone else nor an all or nothing approach.
It gives them more credibility in my personal and professional view.
I see you as one of the most trustworthy of the several privacy/security RUclipsrs I follow. The others are pretty good too, but you seem to explain things more thoroughly.
I'm studying cyber security in uni and when I saw the thumbnail I first thought "this guy is getting a dislike" but I ended up dropping a sub by the end of the video instead, keep up the good content

It's funny that I thought I recently heard in the news that Estonia was advising people not to use certain brands of Chinese phones, including a model of OnePlus phone, because they found spychips in them.
But when I looked it up, it was actually Lithuania, who were advising members of their government to abandon some brands of Chinese phones due to pre-installed software that had a disabled feature which is designed to block certain words and phrases, which could be activated remotely at any time. And OnePlus wasn't included in the advisory, and neither were spychips.
Not sure if I got some mental wires crossed, or maybe someone else did. Or a little of both.
On the upside, I learned some interesting things about Estonia in my search. They have apparently been teaching the public about good cyber security since 2008, through programs in schools among other things. But it makes sense. Apparently 99% of their government services are available online.
Still never heard anything about Google having spychips in their phones. I don't think they'd need chips anyway. They have their fingers in most of the software ecosystem for Android. I'm not saying it's out of character for Google though. Other than the fact that they'd probably need to legally disclose the existence of the chips, similarly to what they have to do for their online services. (In the small print, of course. Hidden by a metaphorical coffee stain.)

I am not kidding but if I would've seen that thumbnail on a video I wouldn't have clicked if it wasn't for you. Because after watching Techlore for quite a long time I can trust this channel to not be clickbait .
This video is why I'll be following you. I've been saying this along with my friend and think that all of us with this mindset should stick together and support each other. Extremes do us no good. We need to discuss, stay neutral, and learn from each other.
I have to say, as much as I understand and sometimes agree with the more extreme sides of the pro-privacy community, frequenting the pro-privacy corners of Odysee and Mastodon becomes very tiring very quickly for this exact reason.
I just told myself: this is a guy, from a channel that I recently found out, that I'm really creating empathy, specially after you've showen a fair point in topics that involves sources-checking and stuffs like that.

Just because we *have* been accused of deleting comments, want to make clear this is some weird RUclips thing. So grateful for a sensible pov....I am so very sick of everyone having to make every tiny topic into something huge and polarizing.............it would be a much happier world if more people could see beyond their own opinions and at least try to understand the "why" of how someone might feel one way or another. I really liked this video, because it itself proved to me the point of the video. I clicked this thinking this is a very clickbait-y title, and I was going into it expecting a pretty bad take on privacy. I found instead a quite nuanced take on the matter. I still don't particularly like clickbait, but I think it can be used in clever ways and I wanted to give props to Techlore here - because this was a good example of that!
Tor is only as safe as how you use it. This should be common sense. Proton is a company and is beholden to court orders. Trusting companies is always risky. But Signal? Im always going to be against it until they dont require a phone number. The average user isn't going to mess around with burner numbers and Voip numbers.

Protonmail 'logs' user data for some time (two weeks, or so they claim?) and is located... in Switzerland. If you are naive enough to "trust' that, then you don't know how the "intel inside" world (let alone the monetary, etc.) works. As they say: "Follow the money..." (to the BIS, or IH$ Templar Intel.) and get your OWN VPN router and/ or say a Netgear M-1 Router and "pay cash" for SIM card(s) if you want to be more 'private.' That 'hacker' wasn't very savvy. (Probably 'groomed' and then hung- out to dry by Interpol, or US, etc. (Free)masonic, intel?)

I was really thrown off balance when I saw this video announcement. I take techlore very seriously, and also I had an emotional day. And I have no fuel because I am in England and everybody is fuel hoarding here. And when your car is useless, you just feel exactly how much you depend on it. And I don't know when I will be able to drive somewhere, because the closest three fuel stations are also out of fuel and I cannot reach any further. So great.

I really like your attitude to this subject. I'm one of those people who doesn't succumb to baseless misinformation. By using my existing technical skills and by investigating multiple sources I try to ensure that my understanding is valid and informed.
man, I do recall Protonmail saying they don't log. The problem today is people say things tongue-in-cheek, and rarely mean anything they say. So no logging unless we are forced to reveal the logs we never had. But since that's all hidden in the small print, don't worry about that. I'm skeptical so I never went for that. Same with VPNs who claim they don't log. Privacy stops with you. Start your own services. I agree with most of your points. It'd be nice.. we'll get there eventually.

What made me interested in privacy was "Hey, if I'm blocking invasive ads, then why I'm letting Google take my data for ads that I don't see?". The only thing I don't block is things like RUclips algorithms, because it's the only one that actually works from my perspective.
I’m just learning how to implement some of these things into my life and your video is on point. There is so much information out there and it’s really hard to know who to trust. I personally just want the information and I’ll decide if it’s right for me. I appreciate your approach.

Ok, ok, so if what they did was shitty, then what would you call protonmails privacy policy change? They were lying about "not keeping ip logs BY DEFAULT", other than that, there is a lot more shady stuff about proton like them not having a proper onion site (they redirect you back to clearnet after logging in) or them not having a private payment option (like monero, or mailing cash) for their premium services. It might not be a honeypot, but it sure is good for catching criminals. I really don't appreciate the bias you have on protonmail (just to be clear, despite all this, I still do use proton, since there aren't many better options, but I think you are presenting it like protonmail is a perfect email solution, even tho email pretty much can't really be anonymous and private (at least not on clearnet))

i really enjoy that Techlore gives his community the facts and is neutral in his approach. I don’t ever feel forced to do something after his videos because Techlore gives the viewers the option of making that decision.

My feedback is very positive. The privacy community needs more people like you. Just to give an example, let's face it: many users need Windows or just don't want to change to Linux. The typical paranoid privacy pure-FOSS advocate will just shum this user and say his privacy is hopeless until he changes his mind, and will shum the user too if he chooses Ubuntu or Mint (and also for not saying GNU/Linux)
A pragmatic privacy (and security overall) advocate, actually trying to help, knows there are different risk profiles, privacy and security are neither perfect nor useless, and that there's much one can do to mitigate risks in Windows, for free, with minimal hassle.
Please keep doing these informative videos, people must realize that safeguarding their data and personal information is not rocket science.

I don't get that feeling. Rob relays great info and can be very passionate about it, but never sensationalist as far as I can tell. And regarding the Proton situation, I'm sure I remember him explaining the situation thoroughly. He still recommends Proton, but even more he recommends that you use it wisely, and, of course, not to do anything illegal.
I slightly got that feeling, too.
Braxman is pretty extreme. He's often not really wrong but you certainly get the feeling that the world is ending every time you watch one of his videos.
It doesn't exactly help that he got sponsored by Startpage and won't talk about it objectively anymore and that he heavily advertises his own services with his fear mongering and because of that refuses to compare competing products in a fair and helpful way.
All of his videos feel a bit like this: "Everything s(/z)ucks, we are being surveilled 24/7, there is little you can do except for browser isolation, device isolation, not using any social media accounts and using my services"
You have to take his videos with a big grain of salt. They can be rather interesting but the way he frames everything can be quite counterproductive.

He does discuss a lot of good topics and I think he knows his stuff but everything is apocalypse-level to him. I'm not sure a normie could possibly exist in the rule set Braxman proposes. Well.. Regarding Proton.... I was writing a paragraph in his defense here as well but the more I thought about it, I had to admit, that he did in fact actually thrash them unfairly at points.
Not everything he said was false, far from it but some points were overly negative towards Proton that apply to any messenger or email provider.

I would probably have watched this regardless of the title and thumbnail. There is extra curiosity when relatively trusted sources resort to clickbait, but that alone doesn’t dictate my response. The risk level of the platform it’s on is also a factor, and so is the perceived likelihood of the source using clickbait for a somewhat legitimate purpose. I would guess that a lot of Techlore subscribers feel similarly, and would not necessarily respond to clickbait from the majority of other sources.
The thumbnail was so over the top, I almost didn’t watch. But I love your videos and the work you do so here I am. Thanks!

I use uBlock Origin (on Firefox) and I don't care about its effect on privacy. I've never heard that it has any bad effects on privacy. I simply don't want to see adverts on RUclips. Ever. I freely donate to videomakers I care about. Just saying.

Im feed up with YT and google ecosystem and its policy; Im aware that to be completely save and private I should basically pull the plug, go full nomad (not possible)
Im on a road to degogle my self totally. It is a long process to be self hosted with everything beside domain.

I would love to see a comparison video on Calyx OS on a Pixel and iOS 14 on an iPhone regarding privacy and security.
I am a subscriber to Rob Braxman, and he had me that worried about Apples privacy, i bought a Google Pixel and installed Calyx OS with Micro g enabled. He is great, but very extreme.
Given there are still not a lot of videos on Calyx, i would love to see Techlore do this video comparison, please.
Calyx is wayyy better for privacy than Apple, but if you’re still going and installing super invasive apps on calyx then it can be worse. Generally it’s the third party Apple apps that do most of the tracking

I understand that privacy should be a given human right, but if people are really that bothered by a service helping authorities catch a criminal, then I think some people's priorities need to be checked lol.
I understand skepticism when those actions violate the policy or claims that the company uses to sell their product, but there seem to be a small (likely just vocal) group of people in this community that get really upset that these companies won't protect them if they do something illegal.
The problem is most data has nothing to do with law. They sell your data around to make YOU the product. There have also been cases of people wrongfully imprisoned, fired from their job, or had their face/likeness used for advertising. Hackers, data breaches, and many other scammers online that purposefully try to get hold of your information to fuck you over. The idea that you’re not doing anything wrong, so it doesn’t matter, is flawed, because your data is being collected for uses outside of just law itself. Even regarding law, there have been states that have banned abortions recently. Places in the world that are anti-LGBT. Places like China that are super oppressive to their online users. Law changes, and law is not always enforced or enforced correctly.
Privacy should be a human right. The faith in government to protect your rights or you as a person is laughable. History has shown us many countries/governments that have gone against basic human rights. That could happen to any country.
Google may be known for security, but most definitely not privacy.

what's more prablamatic than a clickbait is people who read them and share them without knowing the entire truth, even tho the clickbait article will contain truth mixed with lies, the human eyes works on principle of what you see is what you get, and hence people who spread it are far more potentially problamatic than actual headline

Good video I like your aprotch. Would be cool to see you develop the idea of threat models. Maybe we could create some sort of level system, for example: basic, protection against crime. Medium: get out of spying corporations and information trading. Advanced: avoid government and intelligence agencies.
This way it wold be easyer to see what I need to do to reach the level of privacy I feel comfortable with.
Give credit where it's due regardless of your personal bias. I have also seen similar reactions in social gathering when I demonstrate that etc product/company is good at xyz but i personally hate it xd.

Let's take away that anyone's main threat-model comes primarily from the US Government, its legion of military contractors like Google/Alphabet, Israel and the UAE and any nation state in the US eye networks. Governments cracking down on political dissent makes government authority unresponsive to valid domestic differences of political opinion. If Proton Mail or any other company allows itself to be leaned on by a government itself being leaned on by those degenerates in team US Gov then screw them. The rights of the individual, in their respective nations, means nothing to them. Democracy means nothing to the US Government, and an informed public means nothing. Google, Amazon, Facebook, etc. are best thought of as extensions of the NSA.
I remember the whole signal thing beacuse of mobile coins etc.

So much this, I really dislike the linux community for similar reason, like I'd be asking about some windows problem and there would be comments like "just use linux", "windows sucks" etc.. you know the ones, they will completely ignore the fact that my school only uses windows or you know many work places only use windows, it only makes me not want to use linux .That and the general gatekeeping and elitist attitude of the linux community at large.
That and people thinking "recompiling the binary from scratch" is a basic thing to expect the average user to do to install basic programs.
Also there are some very good and widely used programs exclusive to windows (maybe some gaming engines or photo/video editors), some Linux users will tell them to learn the Linux or open source alternative of it. I mean, everyone has limited time in their life, it is almost illogical to put hours to learn a new program rather than using that time to improve their skill or just relax. (Btw, this opinion is coming from a GNU/Linux user.)

There's also just different opinions and levels of privacy though right, for example there are flaws on tor, or some people (like mental outlaw) seem to believe that proton is a honeypot. I mean life is muddy isn't it? it's sad. But yeah making everything unclear is counterproductive
there‘s good reason to believe Proton is a honeypot. The flaws in their service and their false advertising are some red flags for sure.

Normal people can not be able keep up with the most extreme solution to the privacy problem, it will only make fewer people care about privacy since they can not do anything about it, taking a moderate approach will help more people care about privacy and can help people from getting paranoid for the simple issue and they might try to avoid good services that are easy for them for something more difficult to use which make them tired and make them use services they are trying to avoid in the first place
