No tourist would find it - it is Mayfair rents are excessive, the fact it is busy with non tourists says it all.
The piece of fish looked small for the price, the portion of chips also meagre.

You are probably right. A visitor from overseas on holiday would not be able to tell the difference between a cheap fillet of fried fish and a good quality fillet of fried fish. it's a rip-off, tourists are being scammed everywhere.
@@knightsorder You cannot tell until you eat it, defrosted, cod looses not only flavour , but moist. I have been( now retired) in catering all my life, and would be able to tell if the cod had previously bee frozen. But of course you pay for the location as well as for the meal, with matching rents and rates. He also hs to pay 20% VAT, which is not allowed to showed on the bill, so £31 . minus 5 pounds VAT= to £25. A man came in to my cafe some years ago I was charging £1.50 for a cup of tea, his comment was: I can buy a bag of tea for a penny, OK I said. go and buy one bag of tea, if you can, buy a table and chair, pay the landlord and council for permission, buy sugar , milk, cup and saucer, tea spoon, produce some boiling water a waitress to serve you the cup of tea, and somewhere to wash the cup, and pay 20% VAT for the privilege, he said nothing.
Exactly my thought. The batter looked like the supermarket's latest attempts to simulate batter for freezing. I'm at a loss to understand his praise of the meal.
I'm an Aussie and I learn't that Mayfair is the highest rent in the city by playing Monopoly
Buy this shop the next time you play, it must be worth a fortune with those prices.

£30 for fish and chips and they sell you a small loaf to fill you up as the actual meal wasn't that big....don't care how good the cod was that's just taking the proverbial.
in a location like this I would expect to pay those type of prices here in Australia...Good Fish range from $7 to $18 .. Sourdough mini loaf... $7... Chips ..$5... 2 cups of Tea ... $ 12...

As a fellow Londoner, no justification of those prices! I'm going Chez Fred just outside Bournemouth very soon. Inclusive lunch fish🐠 and chips, mushy peas, tea/coffee £12.95. IMO best f&c in UK.🐟

Mate it’s nothing special ! When we went there , I was itching to try it out! Going on about it! It’s literally the name and the hype ! I remember oily chips, soggy batter on chips and from what I remember was a lot more than £13 that’s for sure !

I'm guessing in Mayfair that the landlord will be the 7th Duke of Westminster, Hugh Grosvenor.
Why is the landlord to blame he must also get his return on investment. Why don't you buy a property on the same street and rent it for less.
Just heard of a place in London called Kerridge's. £32 for fish and about 8 chips.

Well ripped off, don't forget you are paying Mayfair rent with your fish & chips, I'd avoid at all costs, calling it a 'chippy' makes it sound cheap, but the opposite is the case.

Because the rents in London are so expensive , everywhere in Central London is very expensive always has been sadly
20 quid for best fish and chips you've ever had, eating in the restaurant in London's most expensive district vs about 14 quid for bog standard take away fish and chips around the country these days. I have no idea what the issue is?..

Maybe it’s because it’s a frozen piece of fish from Aldi and you get about 8 chips with it.
Not everyone is made of money
We don't charge tourists to go into museums, so we get them at places like this :-)
But the overheads must be insane, and if they were too expensive, they'd be empty.
£32 for what was a poor man’s super after his few beers on a Friday night! Absolutely scandalous, but it’s the overheads you’re paying not the food.

As a business owner it’s the way it is. Rent, rates, utilities, staff and product. May fair will be the most expensive place for businesses in the U.K.
I get that. These councils do very little for businesses. Must be tough running a business when you get very little support from councils and landlords.
But no excuses if you can't afford your rent then you should close shop or move somewhere cheaper No excuses for high prices for crap then put up prices to cover losses is not the way balence is key good food for good price and people will talk and come high prices and crap then it's time to close shop passion in what your selling is the foundations to any success this lot are lazy and don't care and over valuing there products so they don't have a future simply business it's only hard If you make it hard 🙂👍

@TheGamesEmporium I know what you mean. The pub is collapsing and the government doesn’t seem to be interested. They almost destroyed the leisure industry over Covid and instead of helping landlords now, they seem content to let the industry die off.
@TheGamesEmporium I know. Even my local charges £7 for a pint of Peroni. The government puts up the VAT on spirits every April so that gets passed on to the customer. Loads of local pubs have closed by me and 10-15 years ago, they would be packed. 2 are now Tesco Express’s and the others have been turned into flats. Even out in London back then you would only need about £30 and that would buy you drinks, something to eat and a train home. Central London isn’t the place it was now and I only go there if have to. Very sad.

I'm right with you mate, I absolutely can't stand anyone being ripped off! Let's be honest that meal was worth half that at most! I've seen way better for less than £15 with no service charge..
Some may have more money than sense if it was busy...?

The problem is East London isn’t Mayfair. The overhead costs would be minimal by comparison. The fact is that though expensive, you said the place was very busy so I guess that tells the whole story.
Don’t think it’s that much for London but the service charge is a disgrace. TIPS should be optional!

This is almost as expensive as Kerridge's in Harrods who charge £37, plus the tea.
Oh dear Darren, what a shame they have to do that! I love the Mayfair chippy quality, but that is not playing fair chippy. I went for the classic at Bicester village in Oxford and paid £17.99, with ample outdoor seating. Yes it's Mayfair but not fair. Thanks for the heads up and another valuable video. Much appreciated.

Mayfair the business rates are probably £4,000+ per month, thats the reason for the high prices.
Still no reason to produce tiny portions. If a business can't survive without skimping on basic foods then it doesn't deserve to be in business.

I hate over crowded and noisy eating places..and over priced food. The food did look excellent, but overpriced. Actually Poppie's is getting too pricey as well. (Camden). As a child I remember fish 'n chips in newspaper and walking along the road and everyone could smell the condiments..

Totally agree Darren. For that establishment to literally rip off their customers is disgraceful. I'm going to W1 with family in a few days and I will avoid that chippy like the plague. I see from the view count its up to 3,650. I guess that's 3,650 that won't be spending their hard earned money in that thiefdom.
ALL of it should be avoided. And never use the device or kard to pay.

First time ive seen DJ's stuff and it was enjoyable.
Liked the way he had the thoughtfullness to think of others while inside the chip shop. Many others would have just talked throughout his meal, so yeah, i had no problem with the "talkover".
I hate service charge; if you dont like paying service charge within your total invoice ask them to remove it, I'm almost sure theyre obliged to.
Look forward to some more of DJ's stuff.
The MC is on our list for an upcoming visit to London. From our previous trips, by far the best F&C's was at the Golden Hind in Marylebone.
What you should remember is the overheads, ie Rent Rates, Staff Costs etc in Mayfair will be astronomical...Someone has got to pay for it, so the costs fall onto the customer....
Doesn't excuse serving up small portions of garbage though does it. Factor in your overheads by all means but serve something that doesn't make the punter feel they've just been ripped off.

It's my birthday on Tuesday so I'm travelling back to my home county of Yorkshire to have REAL fish and chips at the Wetherby Whaler. Excited...!!

I share your sound sense for money. The catchment of this "chippy" covers wealthy residents in Mayfair and adjacent West End as well as the City workers (after a quick pints after work) plus American tourists maybe, all presumably finding 31.44 for a fish tea not a thing to make a particular fuss about. In terms of taste, IMHO there can't be too big a difference between any chippies serving crisp fish & chips within one minute out of deep fryer. I fondly remember the days when fish & chips were wrapped by old newspaper somehow making it tastier.
Well if you eat in high end area like Mayfair then you have to pay high class prices

Some Whitby eat in fish and chip places aren't that far off which is crazy as that is in the North, it is getting crazy.

Fair point on pricing, but, bear in mind that just the rent on that unit would be in the region of £250k a year. Then rates (Mayfair rates), ultimately you're asking for trouble expecting a sit-down meal & Fish & Chips at anything under £30 a head in Mayfair. What I do think, is perhaps their take-away prices ought to be much cheaper - food for thought
Anyone would be shock with the price. You could have better value somewhere else.

Cod and chips in Mayfair for £19-75 isn’t that bad, it’s the extras and service charge that are a rip off. I pay £16-00 in East London.

I live in Swakopmund in Namibia. At the yellow caravan down at our beachfront, one pays for the exact piece of fresh fish as pitured in your video, incl chips with tartar sauce only 3GBP. A béer in a good restaurant costs about 1 GBP. We live in the best country in the world.

The bread looks the old days when they gave you a massive Yorkshire pudding for starter so you ate less meat. Shame they could not give you less bread and a few more chips. I hate that you always get a tiny portion of chips nowadays.

An Aussie tuning-in here. That sort of price would ruin it for me. Also the lack of space & excessive noise (which often goes with small crowded places), would relegate this place as an eat and leave only. And for that kind of serious money I would like to enjoy my time there. Maybe lots of places in London are like this? I wonder.

Not even a tourist trap! You people have to remember this is in the most expensive area of the UK ! It’s not just some random place you go and have a lunch ! A tiny studio flat, basically a tiny room with a kitchen you could probably boil a kettle and make some toast and the smallest toilet and shower sold her for over £1,000,000 ! A parking spot sold for £2,000,000 !

I personally wouldn’t go myself, only went there when company card was paying when working in that area ! But people who don’t know london have no clue what this area is ! Literally all around the chippy are houses of members or Arab ruling families who are worth billions, Russian, Europeans. The rich or the rich! It’s literally a different planet

The fish served at our local chip shop boasts a thickness double that and extends an additional half in length. However, its preparation seemed questionable, not cooked, as it appeared to have consumed a significant portion of the chips. Speaking of which, the chips themselves were so devoid of moisture, one might mistake them for having been baked in an oven.
Some people dont know what there talking about the reason its a perfect shape is because its a cod loin thats just like a fillet steak of a cod 👍

The same but with out the Tea at my local Chippy in Walthamstow is 23 quid and you get a role not sour dough bread, I reckon you're only paying a few quid extra for the location. Poppy's is just as expensive...The next local one it's 11 quid for just fish n chips takeaway but its not the best.
