- Cathy's talking butcher block maintenance (it's pretty simple!) and shows how she oils the walnut butcher block on the island in the Farmhouse kitchen. Here's a link to the oil and a wax used in the video. amzn.to/47RanfY

Beautiful counter! I use that oil in my process for restoring wooden salad bowls too. ✨
Thanks!
My husband made a butcher block table and I used the same product. One teen placed a slice of pizza straight on the table and the sauce stained it. Did I not have enough coats. Do you ever lacquer the tops. We wanted to keep it natural but we have 6 kids! Love your feedback!
Oh dang! Yah kids can be pretty hard on stuff. We've had marker stains from bleeding through an art project, some random pen and pencil scribbles etc. But fortunately they've all faded overtime and we're in a mindset where we're going with the inevitable blemishes until this phase is past then we can just sand it out. We have used a few different finishes on butcher block over the years. We have some in rentals and have gone with polyurethane for durability and that has worked well (I think it would hold up well against a pizza slice!). If you do decide to go with some sort of top coat be sure to sand out the wax/oil to get a good bond.
Thank you I moved in my in law
Basement that has butcher block but it was never sealed I was given some home made thing and now all my butcher block has mold and it won’t come out
You can wash the butcher block with a solution of 10% bleach to sterilize. Let the bleach water soak into the wood for ~15min and then wipe it dry. This will kill all the mold. Let the block dry overnight then the next day you can decide if you want to sand it out or just proceed to sealing with a wax/oil or something more durable like a polyurethane.
What's the name of oil?

Use the wax about every month or two and the oil as needed between.
could you have a butcher block with a sink?
We have done a couple sinks both undermount and overmount in butcher blocks and I wouldn't recommend it. It's just hard to keep the water off them all the time around the sink.
@@TheGRITandPolish thank you so much!
Oily rags can spontaneously combust, storing it balled up under the sink could could result in a fire. Great looking wood though the oil really brings out the natural colour and grain.
Thanks! This is true but this type of oil doesn't have volatile chemicals that lead to spontaneous combustion.
