Welcome to The Grit and Polish! We’re Garrett and Cathy Poshusta, the husband and wife duo behind the Grit and Polish, a home design and renovation blog. Renovation is a family affair for us Poshustas and we take on old houses in Washington state with our 3 kids in tow. Following Cathy’s vision for natural, timeless design, we transform tired spaces into welcoming, family-friendly, and inspiring homes. As hardened DIY’ers, we perform the lion’s share of the work ourselves. This allows us to use a craft-as-you-go approach that integrates old character with modern amenities. The end result is an old house with new life!

Cleaning Hard Water Rings Off Marble
Просмотров 24 тыс.2 года назад
We have hard water and dark rings developed on the marble counter around our bathroom faucet. I decided to clean the rings off while replacing the faucet. Luckily these rings did not stain into the marble and they were removed with a metal scrubber and some Bon Ami cleaner. Our marble is honed so I didn't have to worry about scratching a polished surface. If you try this, double check that it i...

Weed Control with a Torch
Просмотров 16 тыс.2 года назад
We are battling weeds all through the growing season at our Farmhouse. We don't use herbicides so that leaves pulling, cutting and now also using a torch. We're mostly just trying to keep them from spreading rather than complete elimination and the JT850 outdoor torch is really handy for spot weed control, especially in areas like our garden patio. Planting With Landscape Fabric
Просмотров 15 тыс.3 года назад
We're creating a lilac hedge! And we always use a weed barrier fabric whenever we plant landscaping at the Farmhouse. Check out our trick for planting though landscape fabric using a Bernzomatic TS4000T torch. It's a quick and easy way to get a hole for the plant and also seals up woven fabric in the process. You can find out more about this project at The Grit and Polish www.thegritandpolish.c...
This topic should have included the type of landscape fabric used, in this case, woven fabric.
Marble floor with small kids and pets, it's white but it is HIGH maintenance can't just vacuum and acasional shampooing. It's impossible to stay clean but I love how it looks and I'll keep sweeping and moping every morning afternoon and night.
thank you! so helpful!
Glad it was helpful!
I realize this video was posted a while ago but I am wondering how you dug out the channels?
Yes the contractor used a skid-steer with a custom implement that had a piece of w-flange steel that was extendable with a scoop on the end to dig out beam channels underneath the house.
Hey how did you insert the bracket into the dishwasher before screwing it all together? You skipped that in the video and I’m having trouble using the bracket to keep it in place
So in the case of this specific Blomberg model, the plastic bracket has four different "hooks" on one side that slide into catches on the dishwasher door. You can see them as the dark grey rectangles at the beginning of the video.
OMG get rid of the women. LET THE MAN TALK.
I am seeing this quote a bit after you posted it, however if you happen to see this and can offer suggestions, I would greatly appreciate it. We have engineered marble countertops in our bathroom. I’m not sure what the stain is as it is pink and we don’t use anything pink. The only thing I can think of is that it is from one of my skincare products and there was a reaction with the light. The surface over the stain is slightly rough, so I’m worried it is etched in… we have soft water, it is high in iron, but it doesn’t look like iron stains. Any recommendations would be tremendous appreciated.
Dang so sorry to hear that! Yes if the surface is rough it typically means it's been etched. But you may still have some luck removing the pink color. First try the poultice with hydrogen peroxide and baking soda. It may take a few applications to remove it completely. But if the hydrogen peroxide haas no affect, try making the poultice with mineral spirits and baking soda. This will remove stains that are hydrophobic and prefer a non-poplar environment.
We sale this Landscape/garden fabric with holes
DO you have a link for the bracket?
So that bracket came with the dishwasher and will be unique to each manufacturer/model. Also although the bracket is helpful for aligning the door, you don't actually need it. You can use a couple clamps to hold the panel in place while you fasten it.
could you have a butcher block with a sink?
We have done a couple sinks both undermount and overmount in butcher blocks and I wouldn't recommend it. It's just hard to keep the water off them all the time around the sink.
@@TheGRITandPolish thank you so much!
What a waste of time
I don’t have a Brad nailer so I’ll be drilling it to the wall, should I drill into the studs or avoid studs?
I would definitely try to screw through the backplate and into at least one stud if you can!
Straight to the point, I like it.
So simple so stylin. Thank you 🏆
Glad you like it!
Love this. Thanks for posting
Glad you enjoyed it!
important stuff starts at 2:28
That's a smart idea. I've been looking to get one of these and though they've come down in price by a ton, at least in the UK, I'm loathe to ever spend money I don't have to. I've also got a whole bunch of stainless steel strapping hanging around which I could repurpose and spray black. Will definitely be giving this a try. Thanks.
Awesome you'll love it!
How many acres? ❤❤
3 acres : )
You look like Draco Malfoy from Harry Potter
I guess that's better than Crabb!
If you rout the end grain first, you won't get tear out at the corners.
Thanks for the tip Lawrence!
Marble my favorite❤
Ours too...!!
I have been looking for a diy like this, I’m very happy I found it and very excited about building my own..GRACIAS
So glad you found it helpful!
Thank you I moved in my in law Basement that has butcher block but it was never sealed I was given some home made thing and now all my butcher block has mold and it won’t come out
You can wash the butcher block with a solution of 10% bleach to sterilize. Let the bleach water soak into the wood for ~15min and then wipe it dry. This will kill all the mold. Let the block dry overnight then the next day you can decide if you want to sand it out or just proceed to sealing with a wax/oil or something more durable like a polyurethane.
Had a acid stain (etch) on my marble can we fix it
The best way to restore the polished marble surface is to use a wet polisher with a diamond pad. You can also try sanding with a very fine sandpaper such as these 3000 grit papers. amzn.to/3HltN16 I would try them this in an inconspicuous spot first to make sure it gives a similar polish as the rest of the surface.
Hi! May I ask how you will access the vent if anything goes wrong with it in future years?? That’s my husbands biggest concern😒
For the most part these built-in range hoods are all serviced from the bottom. So if the motor or controls need replaced you just operate from the bottom. If it's properly installed, the ventilation duct itsself should never need servicing. And if you're replacing the entire hood vent unit with a different model you'll need to rebuild/alter according to the new model dimensions anyway.
I was cleaning my kitchen hood with caustic soda mix n it spilled on my black marble top of my kitchen n now i get a whitish stain on kitchen top. How can i remove it....
So this is due to an actual chemical reaction between the caustic soda and the kitchen top that results in the marble surface being dissolved so it's no longer glossy and polished like the rest of the counter. The best way to remove the hazy whitish blemish is to polish it with a diamond wet polisher or a high grit sand paper (like 3000 grit).
No offense, but I didn’t want to see you. I wanted to see how you did the pulley.
Watco and or water lok finish are the best… once and done!
Different finishes all have their place. We've used water lok for other wood surfaces at rentals where we wouldn't be around to regularly apply wax and oil. I much prefer the warm buttery look and feel of the waxed butcher blocks. It's also much easier to spot repair the the oil and wax finish than other types of finishes.
This is exactly what I was looking for! And FINALLY some well edited and calm and well organized piece of diy information. I subscribed in a heartbeat. Now shut up, I have to go buy pegs.
So glad to hear it was helpful!
What's the name of oil?
Here's a link to the butcher block products: amzn.to/47RanfY Use the wax about every month or two and the oil as needed between.
Thank you for this! Especially the suspension harness. We made our own frame with two pieces of 1x6 wood instead of your bent metal, and bored holes in it to stick broom handles through (to get a longer length than a normal dowel ). We used your suspension harness and knots. Works great in our (much smaller) laundry room.
Wonderful! So to hear it was helpful
Weird, my skil died as soon as it was introduced to butchers block
Thank you for putting this on RUclips so we can still visit the farmhouse whenever we want. ❤️ Excited to see what you do with the new place!
Thanks Teresa!
This is great, is there a way to keep hard water from standing in the drain sink?
This is inevitable unless you clean frequently with something like CLR or your can install a whole house water treatment system...
Does this work for oil stains on marble? X
For oil stains sub mineral spirits for the water/hydrogen peroxide
I had bad coffee stains on unsealed marble benchtop and tried this treatment and to my surprise it removed all stains after 1 hour soaking. Excellent tip…
Awesome glad to hear that!
Omg! This totally worked. My husband was amazed and so happy. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you chemist!! You should change the name to “The Chemist” or The Chemist should have his own channel…lol. Can you ask the chemist 1) How to get yellow stains out of white clothes? 20 How do you get tomato sauce off of white clothes and countertops? 3) How can you get a bleach stain out of carpet? 4) Tips for pet urine stains on carpets and wood floors and/or laminate etc? 5) how do you sweat stains out of clothes? 6) how do you get blueberry and raspberry stains out of clothes?
Wonderful!
Best place to buy butcher block for an island?
Hardwood Industries hardwoodind.com/custom-glued/
SOS pads looks like
For stains I use hydrogen peroxide and ammonia. Soak a cloth the size of the area leave it over night with a glass or plastic covering, so that it doesn’t dry out. Works for my careers marble ,
Thanks for the tip!
I think going with a deliberate white shade might look a bit unnatural. I would also like to know what your plans are for walls and furniture because it all has to work together. The lightening effect you want to implement could just be done with furniture. I do think it's important to have some contrast, but it doesn't have to be extreme. If you had to choose one though, I would go with Oyster. Otherwise, I'm drawn to Smoke Oak.
Thanks Beta. Smoke Oak has been a popular selection! We'll be finishing this project this fall so stay tuned ; )
wow! amazing..i am just starting my research. The plants do ok with little air and water only going in that circle? we have such an enormous front yard that we need this fabric to go in and then go and make holes like you did! anything i need to be aware of? Thanks so much
Yes the plants do well and some water does get through the fabric. Hope your project goes well!
I have a unique situation… I stained my marble with purple nail polish remover 🤦🏻♀️ Will this work for that or should I try something else? In desperate need of help as we are listing our home for sale in the coming week and need to try to remove the stain. Thank you 😊
So sorry to hear that! But here's what I would try. Make the poultice with clear acetone (which is the main solvent in nail polish remover) in place of water. Cover it with plastic wrap for a few hours to prevent the acetone evaporating too quickly. After 3 hours or (whenever the acetone has evaporated) remove the plastic and let the acetone evaporate until you're left with dry baking soda. Scrap it off and check to see if the stain is gone or has lightened. You can repeat that process until it's gone. If the acetone doesn't have an effect, use hydrogen peroxide to make the poultice and let it set on there for at least 3-4 hours. I think between those two methods you'll be able to get the purple out! Good luck.
My older neighbor got this for me to use at her house. I set it up just like shown and the fuel is running but the damn thing wont light. Any suggestions?
I would troubleshoot by first verifying that propane is coming out the end by lighting a match or other flame source and placing it on a non flammable surface then bringing the end of the torch close to the flame an turning on the gas valve. If it lights this will confirm that all is well with the gas flow. Secondly check that the push button igniter is creating a spark in the barrel of the torch. First remove the gas canister, then in a dark room look down the barrel of the torch while depressing the blue ignition button to verify that a spark is created. If both of those results are positive then I would be truly stumped!
@@TheGRITandPolish The instructions said to only light with a flint lighter, don't have one, and was too scared to try a lighter or match. I took apart the igniter and it's powered but can't tell if it's sparking. Thank you for your help may just need to exchange it. You got yourself a new subscriber.
Love your garden! Do you have a process video on how you removed all the grass/weeds before filling in with gravel?
Thanks! We don't have that video but we used an excavator to scrape off 4-6"
EXCELLENT VIDEO What kind of wood is Butcher Block made from? Thank you for sharing this video
You're welcome! There are quite a few different species that are used for butcher blocks. Some of the most popular are maple, oak, and walnut. The ones in the video are maple.
@@TheGRITandPolish SOOOO BEAUTIFUL
This is helpful. I have a grease stain on my granite countertop and I’m going to give it a try.
This may help but if not sub mineral spirits for the water. That should be more effective at removing fat/grease based stains.
@@TheGRITandPolish appreciate that.
Excellent job. Thanks for making this video
Thanks! Glad you found it useful!
Wow! Your home is amazing!! So spacious & functional, yet warm & cozy. So much character and charm throughout. Absolutely love your esthetic, and the rustic art you have hanging on the walls. 👏🏻🤍
Thank you so much!
Hey, thanks for making the video all about you and not actually about the product.
My pleasure!
