Anyone who has ever tried a new exercise, or trained harder than usual, knows the feeling… you wake up the next morning and your muscles are tired and SORE. Muscle pain after exercise is known as “delayed onset muscle soreness”. The pain and stiffness starts around 24 hours after your exercise, and peaks at about 48hours. While your muscles are in pain, they are also weaker and less flexible. The cause of this pain are miniature tears in your individual muscle fibres. These tears happen whenever you do anything out of the ordinary, and your muscles need to do things they haven’t done before. Your amazing body can repair these tears, which is why the pain eventually goes away. The good news is that feelings of pain and stiffness after exercise are completely normal, and are nothing to worry about. The bad news is that there is very little you can do to relieve it! If you find that the pain doesn’t go away, consider seeing a doctor as it could mean something more than a miniature tear!
