- A little journey into the woods to make a brew, select a billet and carve a spoon from a crook, format inspired by Doug Outside's coffee and carving series. Part two will cover finishing the spoon after the timber has dried out properly.

Thank you Lee. I am new to spoon carving (@ 3 months) watching lots of videos. Especially enjoy Zed outdoor series on spoon carving. In fact had seen your episode. I really have appreciated all of Zeds efforts and episodes dealing with spoon carving. One difficulty I continue to have involves transitioning between bowl and handle. Your treatment of the process between 16:00 - @21:00 , I will put in my notebook to refer back to in future when I find the right crook to work with. I think even a straight piece will benefit from the process you use in getting the stock shaped up past the axe work. Thank you for the brew and relaxing spoon lesson. I've taken to bring my kit camping and canoeing. I too enjoy a wood fired cup of coffee while chipping away.

Judging by the way you went in, you have access to someone else's land ? Or you own your own little bit of forest :-)
Nice and secluded, peaceful and a lovely atmosphere, plus a ready supply of wood to work with :-)
What you did use looked like natural wind fall, that is still very green indeed.
You have not taken down a tree,that's got to be good news.
If I can, I try to get wind fall, storm blown tree.
Having said that, question? Just how long can such trees remain classed as green? Curiosity,

Hi Les, yes I've got a share in a small local woodland, lovely place to spend time reconnecting with nature. How long timber stays green depends on a whole lot of variables like species, log size, when it was cut, how it's stored etc, logs can hold on moisture for a year or two and some windblown trees manage to keep a few roots in the ground and continue to grow though, which is really useful because you can work back towards the main trunk harvesting billets as and when you need them. 👍🏻

Great video! Nice to see you on RUclips again! Was trying to see if I recognized where you were, I used to work in Hemel Hempstead and know you live (or at least used to live) near there. Out of curiosity, what was the saw you were using? It was either your ability with it or the saw itself, but it made light work of everything! Thanks for making this video was fun to watch
Glad you enjoyed it and thanks for commenting. Yeah I'm based on the outskirts of Milton Keynes so not too far from Hemel. That saw is a silky super accel 210, I've had it years now so it's not as sharp as it used to be but they are considered the best saw's for green wood by most tree surgeons I've spoken to and they're definitely my first choice. They do a comprehensive range and I'd go for the medium tooth set for a good all round performance. Cheers.

@@LeeStoffer It looks really good, ive made two axes my self so I know how hard it is. But looks like its exellent for spoon carving.
This is good, but can't see how your carving, please put camcorder just on close to main part of carving, do not need to see the scenery, just your style of carving and which tools using. Thank you for thinking about what I suggested.
Hi Stan, Thanks for the suggestion but I have done other videos which focus more closely on technique if you'd like to check them out, the one my friend Zed filmed and posted on his channel has been quite popular for that. This time the focus was on the whole experience of getting out and carving in natural surroundings (some folk like to see that too) no worries if it's not your thing tho, best wishes, Lee.
Great video Lee....... but you really need to invest in a decent microphone.
Philip Green cheers, will look into it but i've only ever had a couple of comments about sound quality so suspect that playback devices are more likely the issue. I would like to get a decent camera at some point tho, this was all done on my phone and a go pro.
