    Hi Maz, I am in my late 60's and have just started to learn to paint (mainly acrylics at present) your tutorials are some of the most informative that I have watched to-date. My request is .....I have photos of all my dogs from the last 20 odd years, I would like to attempt a medium sized canvas that would include all of them. How can I achieve this, how could I place them all (from different size photos) on the same canvas in perspective.. 'JJ

  • @MrJdsenior
    @MrJdsenior 5 лет назад

    Interesting to see the PROPER use of painting tools and painting techniques. I have attempted some simple artwork, just by the seat of the pants, and some of it came out OK, but NOTHING like the level you are producing here. Seeing videos like this makes me want to try it a bit more seriously.
    Much of what you do, technique wise, is I'm sure, pretty standard, but again, nothing like the techniques I (probably unfortunately) self learned. One thing I find interesting, and it is probably one of my downfalls, is I see you grabbing "shapes" when working the lightening of the facial areas, and you, and most other artists I have watched, don't seem to be much less concerned with working in a "mechanical drawing" type of mode, where everything is drawn to excruciating dimensional detail (a process I am well familiar with), especially in the early stages, except for, apparently, the cartooning of the subjects shape, that seems to be done initially fairly accurately. I tend to try to get TOO accurate, and kind of lose the "beauty" or "feel" of the piece, if you can follow what I am trying to say (badly).
    Artists seem to go more for a "general look", especially in the beginning, and then "flesh out" the rest, and seem to get more and more detail oriented as they (you) refine with additional layers to the final product. This is probably patently obvious to someone who isn't an artistic moron, like myself, but I find it quite fascinating. Is this the same kind or process that "hyper photo realistic" painters use, as well? I suspect it is, and wonder if they, too, start in the general and work to the specific. Makes logical sense, never occurred to me. Trying to start accurately dimensionally specific with all of it CERTAINLY does not seem to work out. I wonder if any artists of the past or present worked this way, though, sort of inside out, if you will?
    One aspect I am finding difficult is ACCURATE color matching. I have watched a few videos, and learned a few things watching people show things like lightening darker colors with white to "bring out" subtleties in varying blues or greens or reds, and showing how to easily get to "the perfect pink" for rose work, etc. and that was eye opening. I am trying to just get to where i can generate an accurate color match to a surface using primaries, white, and black, and MAN, is it sometimes difficult to tell which to add, and in what amount. I saw one guy tlaking about thinking about looking at the colors through R/Y/B filters, and that was of no help whatsoever. Any tips on this that are actually helpful, other than just viewing a color wheel, and "jumping in" to learn, or viewing many more videos? This stuff ISN'T easy. I guess if it were, really good artists (masters) would be a dime a dozen, aye?

    Very great information. Unfortunately two times I failed and threw my canvases out. It was unclear how much of the clear coat spray to put over the pencil sketch. When I applied the lean medium with the number the paint would not spread evenly and would not be easily removed with paper towel. It turns out that the clear coat was too much and very sticky. Perhaps you could demonstrate how to properly spray the outline?

    Just for clarity please...when you are dipping your brush in the “oil”, are you actually dipping it in linseed oil or the solvent called Zest It?

    • @MazArtStudio
      @MazArtStudio  7 лет назад +1

      Richie Journey it’s not solvent. It’s zest it oil medium (similar to linseed I just prefer this brand). Please see the links below for further details.

    • @richiejourney1840
      @richiejourney1840 7 лет назад

      MazArtStudio Thank you! I always heard it to be a solvent and watched it being used as such in particular: colored pencils.

    • @MazArtStudio
      @MazArtStudio  7 лет назад +1

      Hi again zest it DOES have a solvent BUT that’s just one of their products and I’m
      Sure that’s what you will have seen used for coloured pencil. It’s much better than terpentine or odourless mineral spirits. The Lean medium is another one of their product. They also do a clear medium (which is like a linseed oil. I use the lean medium for portraits because it’s fast drying (hence lean) and the Clear medium for flower painting- Clear is a fat medium therefore slower drying which is better for wet into wet flower painting. Hope this explains everything. 😁

    • @MazArtStudio
      @MazArtStudio  7 лет назад

      Karen Turner I don’t use canvas paper which isn’t a canvas. I use actual canvas sheets the link is below so you can research it. I also use boards without any issue. Perhaps if the boards or canvas is very cheap (which is ok) try a light sanding first and perhaps even a coat of gesso primer (some canvases can Be thirsty so extra priming is needed ). Make sure you let the primer fully dry then try the above method. 😁

    Hi Maz. Amazing painting and techniques. Truly Love your work and the way you explain things. My questions to you are: *are you painting on paper or canvas- are there differing methods to each surface. * do you trace the picture on the surface or freehand. *Would you call teaching -cheating in art? I can draw but sometimes especially with either human or animals (or whatever actually) it’s easier and faster to trace. *When you ‘fix’ the pencil drawing with hairspray and paint over it can you still see the drawing well. I couldn’t see very well in the video. Thank you and geeetibgs from Sydney Australia xx. Happy birthday for today too. 🥂🍾🎂

    • @reneewant6408
      @reneewant6408 7 лет назад

      **Tracing not teaching

    • @MazArtStudio
      @MazArtStudio  7 лет назад

      Renee Want hi Hun. I traced this onto the canvas sheet. I use sheet board or stretched canvas and do the same method no matter what. No tracing isn’t teaching (I can draw well but it’s slower) I keep my prices reasonable by speeding up the process. The main thing is you enjoy it! If you do a commission your client isn’t interested in HOW you did it they want the dog to look like their dog. Besides which I can trace an image out twice and no two people will ever get the same painting. Getting the image on canvas is only a small part of the equation. You’ve still got to paint 😁. Enjoy your art (trust me LOTS of artist trace) some admit it but quite a lot won’t. 😁

    • @MazArtStudio
      @MazArtStudio  7 лет назад

      Renee Want yes if you fix the drawing you can see it clearly after the initial umber wash.

    Marion, is this the same technique that you use in your 3 day workshop please? You say that the next one will be uploaded in a week when the 1st layer has dried (This example using oil). Do you use acrylic underpainting in your 3 day course please?

    • @MazArtStudio
      @MazArtStudio  7 лет назад

      Russell Collins yes it’s the same technique. I used a fast dry medium and it’ll be dry the next day. I don’t typically use acrylic as you can’t erase the same. Burnt umber is also a fast dry paint.

  • @gms9810
    @gms9810 7 лет назад

    Why did you start with burnt umber?

    • @MazArtStudio
      @MazArtStudio  7 лет назад +1

      gms9810 burnt umber is a fast drying paint for one and secondly when I do the second layer the warmth of the umber often peaks through which I love. In theory any colour can be used (I’ve used raw umber too but I always stick to earth tones (raw umber burnt umber burnt sienna or raw sienna) typically. Burnt umber happens to be my preferred choice as I feel it leaves this warmth (raw umber cold) but it doesn’t over influence the over colours which I feel the other colours I’ve mentioned could. I hope that explains. The biggest reason too is that it’s a fast drying paint and with the medium I use it means that the underpainting is dry the next day. 😁
