    Both BART & MUNI have totally ignored fare evaders since 2020! What do you expect??? Both BART & MUNI are horribly mismanaged!!!

  • @pimaxuma
    @pimaxuma 8 месяцев назад +9

    Blame TV news for telling everyone that others are evading fares, so additional people chose to also not pay. And Muni's fare inspectors plan is wasted money. There's no way a fare inspector is gonna catch enough fare evaders to cover their $72K starting salary. Because for a $2.50 Muni fare, that means 2,400 evaders per month (80 per day or 10 people per hr). On the other hand, if using fines ($50-$124 fare evading penalty in SF) to cover that $72K salary, that means only 120 evaders needed per month (4 per day). In other words, these fare inspectors have an incentive to catch people that can pay the fine. So all the fare evading homeless, drug addicts and vagrants will continue to roam free without consequence.

    • @jonleestaples
      @jonleestaples 8 месяцев назад

      No. They don’t pay because when you use the clipper card through your phone. You only need to tap it once every two or so hours because of the transfer option. Therefore most people getting on and not tapping are not taping because they already paid.
      If you want to stop toll evader in this sense. Require people to tap on and off every time.

    • @iseeflowers
      @iseeflowers 7 месяцев назад +1

      @@jonleestaples don’t you still have to tap even if you have a clipper transfer on your phone when you get on the bus?

    • @jonleestaples
      @jonleestaples 7 месяцев назад

      @@iseeflowers if so I’ve been misinformed and have been doing it wrong. When I started using muni I’d get on each bus and tap as with any other bus. But it wouldn’t take it after the first tap. And the bus driver told me you don’t tap more than once for payment. It won’t accept it. Once you pay you have 2-1/2 hours of transfer and the only way to check it is going into your wallet to that clipper card and look at the history. That’s how you prove proof of payment if confronted. Otherwise. You tap once, pay. And walk into other buses without doing anything while your transfer is valid. This is why bus drivers don’t pay attention to your actions in payment anymore.

    At least 66% of unhoused think it's a lifestyle, feel entitled to steal, to bus rides, etc. MUNI has one of the best FREE disability & senior pass systems in the country, these passes are subsidized and their use gets income for MUNI, yet these people cannot be bothered. I have to add wealthy kids with skateboards & foul mouths skip fares & go on shop lifting sprees in larger numbers than are counted. There's got to be a better way to triage those in genuine need that want to work to get back on their feet. This is madness.

    Who wants to ride muni if there is a choice? $3.00 for adult fare and can only use the fare ticket for TWO hour period. That is like you pay when go to grocery shopping, you better hurry and finish and get back on the bus before your ticket expires or you have to pay another $3. Not only that you can expect to be packed like sardines on some buses. They should make it 4 hours for the transfer ticket before it expires.

    As a Californian living in New York, I can say investing in fare gates is an endless money pit. Your million dollar faregates are going to be weakest at a single point (the emergency exits). Make a reliable service that people feel comfortable paying for, and people will come and pay. Every dollar that goes towards combatting fare evasion can be used to run more frequent trains, more frequent buses, creating BRT, expanding tram lines, etc. Also shouldn't companies subsidize commutes as is common in Japan?

      My issue with SFMTA is that they frequently bump up the fare in a city that is expensive to live in. And before you go and tell me to move, I’m a native, born and raised in SF. This wasn’t an issue growing up. This city has allowed issues like homelessness and mental illness to proliferate and eventually these folks end up on the buses. Don’t believe me? Do yourself a favor and ride the 9 San Bruno, probably the most disgusting, and sketchy line in the city. Plenty of fare evasion officers ride it but how are you gonna get a homeless person or an erratically behaving person to cough up $2.50? Let me help you out, they don’t the fare evasion officers allow them to ride only bothering other riders.

    No strict enforcement and no consequences, leads to rampant bad behavior.
    My suggestion:
    1. Ist time caught, warning
    2. 2nd time caught, $100 ticket
    3. 3rd time caught, $1000 ticket plus community service.
    Use the money to hire more officers!

    • @pimaxuma
      @pimaxuma 8 месяцев назад +1

      Incorrect. There's no 1st time warning. Fare evading penalty is $50, and up to $124. So usually Muni fare inspectors don't bother to harass the usual suspects, like homeless, drunks, vagrants, etc. So these miscreants get no incentive to stop their behavior. Muni inspectors tend to only harass people that can pay the fine, to generate revenue for Muni. In other words, nothing improves.
