Finally! Normally Portland is just catching bad press. I'm so happy to see that it's being showcased in a positive light! And big props to Skanska and Hoffman, beautiful job well done!
Gotta say I do really like the sweeping, flowing lines of wood slats. Gives the terminal a character differentiating from all other airports, and looks like a comfortable place to spend time in.
In the Netherlands this style was very common in the 80's, places like theaters, libraries and my local mall used to look like this, it even had those Y pillars. To me it feels very outdated
The amount of beautiful timber work instead of the usual exposed shiny metal finishes that you see everywhere in US transportation sector is such a breath of fresh air!👌🏼
I flew into PDX back in May while they were still under construction, and again in September, and it's actually breathtaking when you first walk out into the atrium. It's the first airport I've been to where it actually felt nice and relaxing to just sit down and enjoy the vibe for a while.
This style must be the in thing in construction right now. Pittsburgh International airport is currently building a new terminal with similar wood ceilings, structural tree columns, and inside landscaping, albeit on a smaller scale.
Having natural elements in construction is becoming more popular. I work for a construction company in the SE and we get more and more requests for exposed wood elements such as trim, columns, and ceilings.
Great, but you should also make a video about the new Thessaloniki metro in Greece. It is as big a project as the one in Sydney you covered extensively, and just as complex with the arcaeological excavations getting in the way.
I’ve been following your work for a while and I honestly love this type of content! Definitely informative and easy to watch videos! Really great editing🙌
Yes, that iconic airport carpet has inspired years of "shoe selfies" as travelers have moved through the airport. Yet another facet of keeping Portland weird!
For the longest time, I've only seen PDX with giant walls of white, fencing off construction areas. So when I drop my sister off yesterday, I can't help but gawk at what's now behind those glass plates outside.
Milwaukee, the city that I am attending college in, has a lot of mass timber plans. The ascent is the tallest mass timber building in the world and we have plans for multiple more, one of which would be the tallest skyscraper in the state of wisconsin
As a commercial airline pilot in the US, PDX was my favorite airport to operate out of and thru. It was very nice, pretty and easy (from a pilots perspective) before this project. Now it is absolutely stunning! If only my employer would make it a base. I’d transfer out of DEN post haste. DEN is my least favorite airport in the US. It’s been mismanaged since it opened.
Lol I live in Portland and am gonna be flying out of PDX for the holidays this Dec. I hadn't use the airport in the 6 yrs I've lived here so this should be interesting to see in person.
I guess we are overlooking RDU, PAE, MSO, MCI, and DFW high-C gates. Pretty sure new LGA is pretty nice though I've not personally seen it yet. Nice to see PDX gettting some airtime though!
The Orlando airport also has a famous (ugly) carpet. They even sell socks at the airport with the same pattern. They have been replacing the carpet but haven’t changed the pattern so it looks new
Shouldn't "hard as nails" have been "robust"? You had just described how flexible the structure is in case of an earthquake. "Hard as nails" seems the opposite of "flexible".
Thanks for doing this story about PDX. Portland’s new airport is simply stunning as is Westerern Oregon. The wood and forest feel is appropriate for the forest that Portland is carved out of. This airport is worth a visit.
There's a strange lack of clocks at PDX. Just saying. And hooks in bathroom stalls. And places to stand and work. Was just there and kinda disappointed by the utility side of things.
“It can hardly be a coincidence that no language on Earth has ever produced the expression "as pretty as an airport". Airports are ugly. Some are very ugly. Some attain a degree of ugliness that can only be the result of a special effort. This ugliness arises because airports are full of people who are tired, cross, and have just discovered that their luggage has landed in Murmansk (...) and the architects have on the whole tried to reflect this in their designs. They have sought to highlight the tiredness and crossness motif with brutal shapes and nerve jangling colours, to make effortless the business of separating the traveller from his or her luggage or loved ones, to confuse the traveller with arrows that appear to point at the windows, distant tie racks, or the current position of the Ursa Minor in the night sky, and wherever possible to expose the plumbing on the grounds that it is functional, and conceal the location of the departure gates, presumably on the grounds that they are not".” ― Douglas Adams, The Long Dark Tea-Time of the Soul
Can you make a update video about the Francis Scott Keybridge? Where is it at right now in Baltimore Maryland? Are they doing any construction over there?
It’s because we invented aviation that we lack beautiful airports, not despite it. Our infrastructure is most original. The new money places like Singapore and Dubai are making new airports.
I wonder if a lot of this is because flying came of age in the age of the brutalist ethos. Hope to see more beautiful airports in the US in the coming years
Why? Because it's Portland? It didn't look like a NY subway before this facelift, so why would it suddenly change? The city of Portland has its issues, but the airport has always been nice. That being said, leaving your car in the parking lot may be a bit risky.
America... Where is America?? You mean, North America, or South? Or, perhaps, you are calling the US, America? OK.... Well, everyone here, in the US, that thinks, thinks you are not credible, or an idiot! I really enjoy your channel. Thanks for what you do. Forgive me for pointing out what annoys me, but it is so basic, that I cannot believe it.

I live in Portland and shoe pics at PDX are 100% a real thing.
Omg … I live down town we use the airport a lot… I can’t believe that our Portland airport made it on BIM
Long Beach is a pretty beautiful airport, but the vast majority of airports appear to be designed as warehouses with people instead of pallets.
This style must be the in thing in construction right now. Pittsburgh International airport is currently building a new terminal with similar wood ceilings, structural tree columns, and inside landscaping, albeit on a smaller scale.

I love the warmth of the wood - very welcoming and inviting.
Also the shops inside PDX don't mark-up prices, so everything is very reasonable
I’ve flown to pdx twice a year for the last 19 years, seeing the progress is insane I don’t think people realize how outdated it was
A B1M video woo hoo!!!
You know it.
So glad you covered this! I was one of the glazing PMs that worked on the custom point supported glass facade.
Proud to call this place my home.
Very beautiful airport. I flew in and out of PDX this past September. Compared to Seattle...day and night.
Great, but you should also make a video about the new Thessaloniki metro in Greece. It is as big a project as the one in Sydney you covered extensively, and just as complex with the arcaeological excavations getting in the way.
Looks excellent, I hope Cleveland (Ohio) gets something that looks half as good when they start renovations of the whole Hopkins site next year.
Calling 300 miles local is very American. For most country thats the size of most of the country.
I did choke a bit when i heard local and 300 miles.
I’ve been following your work for a while and I honestly love this type of content! Definitely informative and easy to watch videos! Really great editing🙌
Thanks so much!
Sooo happy you mentioned the famous carpet! 😊
Yes, that iconic airport carpet has inspired years of "shoe selfies" as travelers have moved through the airport. Yet another facet of keeping Portland weird!
Stopped at that airport on my trip a few months ago. It was incredible
I love the wood beams and timber architecture of the Raleigh-Durham airport. I will plan a trip to PDX soon just to check out its new terminal.
Hope you are aware about the new Bangalore airport built on a similar theme.
Yes. Also very beautiful.
For the longest time, I've only seen PDX with giant walls of white, fencing off construction areas. So when I drop my sister off yesterday, I can't help but gawk at what's now behind those glass plates outside.
Cool to see a video about something close to home! I live across the river in Washington but have watched the renovation as it has happened.
I see a photo of Oslo Airport. 00:16 And i guess Berlin airport is very low on the list?;P..
It is such a beautiful upgrade to pdx, I recently was there. Hoping the rest of pdx airport is updated to a similar style.
This is realy a stunnign beautiful airport! I love timber and this looks just so nice!
What part of America? Oh! you mean the U.S.
Brilliant video.
I was just there, I could have got you some B roll footage. Also a friend of mine is a construction manager on the project. It really is beautiful.
Eero Saarinen's JFK was the first beautiful airport.
Love your vids!
Milwaukee, the city that I am attending college in, has a lot of mass timber plans. The ascent is the tallest mass timber building in the world and we have plans for multiple more, one of which would be the tallest skyscraper in the state of wisconsin
Well.. I've been to the new PDX Airport, but BLR is just at a whole another level!
As someone who works in Miami International, how wished my city could have a better airport, both functionality and aesthetic wise.
I’ve never been to Portland but I really want to to go now. I actually thought it was O’Hare’s new terminal from the thumbnail
Lol I live in Portland and am gonna be flying out of PDX for the holidays this Dec. I hadn't use the airport in the 6 yrs I've lived here so this should be interesting to see in person.
hope to see this

B1M throwing shade at Denver International Airport (DIA). It's not that bad!
sorry, we gotta fund the MIC first
I bet they had fun times during the timber price spikes in 2021 and 2022. 😂
The Orlando airport also has a famous (ugly) carpet. They even sell socks at the airport with the same pattern. They have been replacing the carpet but haven’t changed the pattern so it looks new
Looks like a airport you would see in Skandinavia.
BEJIRR❤
Skanska?! Now that’s a construction company that we all know about here in Stockholm, Sweden ❤❤❤
Such a beutiful building i like that its tall so the silly saudi pilots dont miss it again
last time the airport was tiny and they had an accident
Amusing 😮❤
Nice! PDX was in desperate need of some TLC. A beautiful airport for a beautiful city. ❤
Shouldn't "hard as nails" have been "robust"? You had just described how flexible the structure is in case of an earthquake. "Hard as nails" seems the opposite of "flexible".
Check out Bangalore Airport Terminal-2, we already have a Green airport built with trees and timber.
Beavers would love it
Singapore will always be the most beautiful and passionate airport
I like Incheon Airport as well.
Looks a bit like banglore's terminal 2 but still that one is much more beautiful
Has a NW vibe that's for sure
I hope I'll get to see B1M on Nebula one day
Thanks for doing this story about PDX. Portland’s new airport is simply stunning as is Westerern Oregon. The wood and forest feel is appropriate for the forest that Portland is carved out of. This airport is worth a visit.
What a logistics nightmare. Good job!
NAWICE.
Shout out to DeaMor skylights!! Best skylight manufacturer in the world.
👇Under 1 hours gang
Been there in the last few months and going there in a few weeks - it truly is beautiful
There's a strange lack of clocks at PDX. Just saying. And hooks in bathroom stalls. And places to stand and work.
Was just there and kinda disappointed by the utility side of things.
Apparently some of this is planned for phase 2 (places to hang out). Not sure about the bathroom hooks! =)
I love the inside, the outside is a bit meh though, no?
Beautiful yes, maintenance nightmare? You bet!
Infrastructure in general is no longer the US's strong suit, airports notwithstanding.
And hasn't been for quite some time.
You mean the US, America is the continent...
And Western Sahara isn't bloody Morocco
American airports have to actually make money. They aren't national prestige projects as in other nations.
Like the famous architect W. Churchill said: "You can always count on Americans building beautiful buildings - after they've tried everything else."
What is the fire protection like? Wood burns.
And in the UK we have Luton, the prettiest and best performing airport ever built
Luton and pretty. Two words rarely put together.
@ 😂
A strong rival to Changi

Grouchy this morning?
Now they just have to fix the zombie apocalypse in downtown Portland .
Can you make a update video about the Francis Scott Keybridge? Where is it at right now in Baltimore Maryland? Are they doing any construction over there?
"Quick, let's demolish it and put an ugly concrete and glass slab there instead."
An American billionaire right now, probably.
The main concourse actually feels calming despite being incredibly busy.

about time 🎉🎉
Gonna look like the New York subway in 5 years
Let's hope not 😅
Why? Because it's Portland? It didn't look like a NY subway before this facelift, so why would it suddenly change? The city of Portland has its issues, but the airport has always been nice. That being said, leaving your car in the parking lot may be a bit risky.
Portland is beautiful.
@@Thesmellofrain-h6odamn right it is.
Do more videos about Africa😊
BLR airport T2 follows the same design ideas
This bro fell off instantly!!!
Over 1000 views in 6 minutes that’s insane
kansai is number 18? they didnt have a western style toilet there 😭 only the squat type
Um who says this is the most beautiful?
Crazy how much money still goes to flying instead of greener alternatives like trains…
What's crazier to me is that we had the train infrastructure in this country and willingly destroyed it
it looks like a copy paste of bangalore airport to be honest. Only that bangalore airport used Bamboo
Ahh Portland... the place where young people go to retire.
And what say you if ALL of North America has beautiful airports?
no love for SLC airport?
All these airports are postmodern and all look the same you didn't even mention Istanbul at the start and it looks like the ones you showed.
"United States", not America.
Thank you.
I am not surprised. Americans aren't fond of spending tax dollars for "beauty". We want functionality.
America... Where is America?? You mean, North America, or South?
Or, perhaps, you are calling the US, America?
OK.... Well, everyone here, in the US, that thinks, thinks you are not credible, or an idiot!

Vancouver is #17 and in North America. Please stop calling USA America.
0:06 B1M accepts Moroccan sovereignty of Western Sahara? lol
Don't call United States of America just "America".
