(Saying this as a Black person): "Female" as an adjective/description is fine, in the same way that saying "Black" as an adjective/description is fine - "Female rapper," "Black person." Referring to women as "females" as a noun sounds as odd and dehumanizing as referring to Black people as "Blacks." That kind of detached language is usually reserved for scientific contexts where it's crucial to distinguish the biological sex of a species, as in "males or females of this species [female lions, female plants, etc.]." I agree with the comment Ethan read on the show earlier: most men do not refer to each other as "males" because we have a word for "human males" called "men"...and the same applies to women. However, incels and misogynistic men were the first people to start referring to women as "females" out of spite, as if we're not even of the same species, ie not human/subhuman.

I've been telling people this for years, go out and know your neighbors, for example knowing what they would like to be called, and then calling them whatever you want because it's your language. Just look at Joseoh Geobbels, famous in history for using language to normalize treating people how they should be treated. Smart minds like you and Geobbels are what the world needs, people who care so much about their neighbors that if their neighbors say "hey that hurts me and has been historically used to incite violence" you can completely ignore it and tell them asking for this level of dignity is equal to putting dog poop on doors. Keep up the good work, knowing your neighbors is the first step in figuring out how to dehumanize them! Caring for your neighbors though?? I also think the main point was that "females" in those contexts are used practically deliberately to separate men from women as if women were a whole different species.

Unfortunately I think this kind of reaction is common in society as whole. People tend to overcompensate regarding issues like this. Rather than have nuanced discussions about topics, the go-to move now is to agree, accept and move on.
Yeah that whole conversation was genuinely painful to listen to. Straight up pandering. Shanon had the most level headed take, all about the context. The word itself just isn’t offensive in the slightest.

Those "self defense" classes are 90% bullshit to make people feel better without working hard. If you actually care about defending yourself take kick boxing and Jiu-Jitsu classes. It's hard work but actually effective and an insanely good workout.

The whole talk about "females" is a perfect example of how men are default and women are the "exception" to everything. When people ask you who's your favorite athlete, it's implied that they are asking male athlete, otherwise they'd specify with "female athlete". As a woman, I've never felt equal to men and this feeling started pretty early on. But I think the real talk isn't about using female as an adjective, but as a noun. It's a proper form of the language to use it as an adjective (eg female artist). However, it's not normal to replace the word woman with the word female (eg females are emotional). Lately people have been using this A LOT, at least online, and it definitely contributes to the cycle of violence against women because it reduces women to biological terms. It literally dehumanizes them.

I think they sorta misunderstood the whole 'female' thing (and I'm surprised they were surprised). Just use the word 'female' the same way you'd use 'male', and 'woman'/'women', the same way you would 'man'/'men' and you're fine. The incel thing is when in the male context they'd use the word 'man'/'men' and in the female context they use 'female'. As one of their comments reads, it's dehumanising because 'female' is a term that can describe any female animal whereas 'woman' is only for people.

What Ethan fails to understand about Olivia’s (fantastic) demonstration, is that the technique is meant for when you are already being choked. It’s not a preventative measure-you are literally about to die, if you don’t escape. Yes, you will be on the floor, likely temporarily incapacitated, but you will be alive, and your lungs will have access to oxygen. You are not out of the fight yet, but you likely stunned and confused your attacker momentarily, which you can use to kick his knees out from under him. Or when he reaches for your face you can clamp down on his fingers and not let go until they are severed.
These tips are meant to *save* you, not avoid trouble. You will die if you try to “think” about what to “logically” do.

@@MrAwEsOmE145770 so the problem is that female is usually used just as an adjective (and that is fine majority of the time). However, using the word female as a noun to replace the word woman - why? Usually, it is used in a deragotary way. You don't see women referring to a group men as "males". The word female as a noun to replace "woman" is usually used in incel communities to kinda dehumanize women. Safe choice is to use it just as an adjective (female athlete, female rapper), but not as a noun - it's a group of women, not females. Hope this helped to clear things a little 🌻

I started going to Muay Thai a couple months ago, it is pretty nice to be learning self defense techniques from my teacher. Helps me feel at least a bit more prepared for if I need to throw down! I wasn't going to say something, but as someone who is coming up on my 4th yr clean off of hard drugs it does kind of sting a little to hear them be joked about in such a way. I understand that it isn't a huge deal, but I have lost many people due to drugs and it is crushing to watch some people give up on getting to a better place especially when you've been in the same spot. I feel like the whole female argument boils down to adjectives and nouns. Female is an adjective, something can be a female cat or a female human, but you can't just be A female. I personally feel like saying female athlete is fine, in the same way that saying male athlete is fine. It's a way to describe and give more context to the noun: athlete.

There's just a difference in the way you might use the word "female". Using "Female" as a descriptor is fine, and is normal (Female rapper, female athlete, etc.) The issue is when people use "Female" as a noun for an underlying negative connotation. For example, some people might say "All those females over there..." or "Y'all are just a bunch of females who don't know anything" etc. It is definitely hard to describe if you have never heard it used in the negative way! It is not necessarily the word "female" itself but definitely connotation/intent/usage.
Chloe C right!! And when you think about it- normal people don’t use “female” to describe women typically… they say “woman” or “women”. So when someone uses “female” it’s weird bc they went out of their way to say it like that and for an obvious reason😂

The whole “female” conversation made them all look stupid. It’s not that hard to tell that the phrases that sound bad are the ones using female as a noun. “I was talking to a female” sounds bad. In the question “Who is your favorite female athlete” female is an adjective describing the athlete.

Female is a descriptive word, you can emphasize that someone is a female, but referring to any woman or women in general as "females" is usually aggressive and belittling.

using female as an adjective is perfectly fine! ex: "female athlete" "female rapper" I think it becomes dehumanizing when it's used as a noun, like how Dan said it would feel weird to refer to a group of women as "those females over there". There are obviously differences between racism and sexism, but I think it's a similar idea to say "black people" vs "those blacks over there".
I agree. However it is so common to say rapper or athlete and think male, so I think using female infront of it only further ostracizes females. If we just say she is an athlete or rapper, and don’t need to say female I think people will start to get the picture
