Put file in vinegar for 24 hours. Remove from vinegar and dunk in baking soda liquid to neutralize the acid. Dry off and then clean with a brass wire wheel. Try it,you'll like it.
File cards are a preventative tool. It took years for me to get into the habit of using it to clean while I was filing and if you do your files will be good for life.
I soaked the blade of a pole saw that had become rusty and no longer cut in vinegar for three days, neutralized it with baking soda, and then applied oil to prevent rust, and it became sharp again. The minimum temperature is 15 degrees Celsius.
I like the idea of using solvent, guess a guy could go up and down on wire wheel with the teeth , if you want to mitigate file damage, anyway good post, I also like your slow speed motor. 😉
I seen a video of someone using WD40 before using a wire brush, anyone ever try this method? Also, I got in the habit of using a full face shield on my bench grinder. Although he’s obviously using a wire wheel here, if you’ve ever seen a stone wheel disintegrate you’d wear one too.
If you want a sharp file on your bench, buy good quality and look after it - acid sharpening is a waste of time. It eats away at the surface and you think it is 'sharper' but at best, you have cleaned away the rust, but it soon turns into a metal 'sandpaper block' that grinds away rather than acting as a sharp metal cutting tool I use brass suede leather brushes, mainly because the wires are finer and get right to the bottom of the valleys
Using a wire wheel on a file is the dumbest thing you could ever do. If you must use a wire wheel make sure it’s solid brass (very expensive) The better way would be a 8 hour soak in vinegar and a rinse in baking soda and water than use air hose immediately to dry or use Evaporust followed by hot water and card file or plastic bristle brush and air hose to dry. This guy is just destroying the files.
What do you think a file card does to a file? Those are far thicker than the wire wheel and you can use brass ones if that really bothers you. Works great on files that have been using for YEARS. Not days, not weeks but YEARS.
@@michaelidarecis3029 a file card has the bristles bent back at an angle and is designed to run through the teeth. I don’t know what he is filing but it’s pretty hard and it sounds like he is rubbing not cutting

just wondering if you've tried this on powersaw files?
@@promisedlandadventures3617 I thought about it but never tried yet.
How long in baking soda?

This was equally informative as your commentary was entertaining
That's the slowest AC motor I've ever seen.
I learned alot from this video. Now, I'm going to clean all my files. Oh, now I know what a bastard file is.
Would it hurt the file to clean it in a blast cabinet?
It would fucking destroy the files😂
Depends what you use as abrasive…

That’s the best idea ever

Thanks man! 😸
Isn't a file that rusty even when cleaned just going to be dull even if you get everything out of the grooves?
You can also use this method to clean the bugs off your chromed plastic grills on your vehicle..
Soak in vinegar overnight. Muriatic acid even better, not as long.
Nice, thanks man. I think you should wear gloves also, in case the item slips you would be wire brushing your fingers..
You don't wear gloves around rotating machinery. Grabs your glove, breaks your wrist, or worse.
You are right, I will keep it in mind. Thanks
You only do it once
I was told using a wire wheel on a grinder makes the file doll
No it doesn’t…works fine..
soak them overnijght in white vinager and use file card

Absolute rubbish…a wire wheel works really well, the wires are no where near as hard as the wire used on a file card
Wear some gloves!!!
Wow , the surest way to make a knife out of a file is to clean it with a wire wheel! WILL dull it EVERY TIME. Don't believe me contact any file maker.

You can use a wire wheel if the bristles are made out of brass or copper.
@@samindaperamuna6392 you can but why?
This is absolutely Not how you clean a loaded file.
