There’s this quote from a character on a movie that I loved. His name is Bigweld, he’s from the movie Robots. And he said a quote that I think suits these really well: “You know, I love to tinker. But all the tinkering in the world isn’t useful unless it starts with a good idea. So, look around for a need, and start coming up with ideas to fill that need. I recently got these included with my new kit and im loving them. I recommend putting an adhesive pad on that metal piece that goes under the bass drum so it doesn't damage the hoop. Imo by far the best sound reduction solution available. Great review Rob!

I love the idea of these. The price is high for sure, but I think it's more for the convenience of not having to change the heads all the time.

I'd love to see a side by side comparison between the RTOMs and the Aquarian SuperPads. The ROTMs really seem to be an combination of the SuperPad's ease of installation without removing the actual drumhead and maintaining tone, with the Silentstroke's mesh feature with adjustability and rebound. The cost of the RTOMs is about the same as the SuperPads.

id really like to see a decibel rating on the mic pickup from both demos. they are obviously quieter but its nice to have that visual to see how they are, especially if you are listening on a laptop. its not hard to judge the obvious difference, just nice to confirm before buying

How did they work
I have a set of these and if you tune them to match the resonance of your actual drum head they sound really good. It takes a little trial and error but just play with the tuning on them until you get the sound you are looking for.
Excellent review. I believe the prices are very marketable. Great products pay for themselves over time. I am impressed with the overall suppressed sounds.

Great review! And I see that you're still using the excellent UV1 heads underneath. I'm surprised that they are not offering a 26" model, but then again, I'm still disappointed I can't get an 8" UV1...

I go to that Black hole drumheads it’s have a good noise soft cracking sounds and it’s better for self practicing and ain’t won’t bother the neighbors surrounding 😊😊
They make great products. I love the moon gel practice pad for working out with not much rebound(like a slack floor tom). Seems like a great product!

About to start lessons, but the sticking point was the noise (my 95-yr old grandma lives with us). And I really didn’t want to spend a fortune on an electronic drum kit that I don’t like the feel of. This seems like the perfect solution! For $600, I couldn’t get an edrum I would be happy it’s, but I CAN get these and a pack of Zildjian L80s.

A very clear explanation on what appears to be a way round what modern drums do best, make a big noise. Not a solution I will be able to take up, but for those who do, did you feel the need to reposition toms due to that extra height factor?
I got a set and there great. The down side is the kick and kick conversion. They dont snap on . The are buit to the size of the tension ring so you kind of sit them in there awkwardly. of coarse there are solutions. one being better clips. or specific redesigns for kick rims. thse skins fit perfect on tom rims.

I picked up a barely used Yamaha DTX-450 kit for $350 cdn. I use a rubber mat and I have no complaints from downstairs or next door. No real good way to make an acoustic kit sound quiet enough to be played in an apartment complex.
Rob, I see you've got the UV1's on your drums. What do you have on the reso side for your drums? Great video by the way, love these new series of videos you're doing!
+Jacob French Just the stock clear 10mil heads on this kit, but I have UV1s/Reso 7s on my Stage Birch. Wicked.
Just bought some from sweetwater. 13, 12, 14, and 20 ran me $239. Is it worth being able to play my kit in my gfs and I's new apt to practice for gigs? Absolutely. These are well worth the hour's you'd spend changing your heads. Plus I got em tuned to my drum heads tension so there's almost no diff in feel. Get them if you're on the fence.
have you heard anything about the Drumtec real feel mesh heads? beginner drummer living in an apartment and I can't decide between these heads or those

I just saw where they have triggers for these now. This would be great for studio if they work. You can quickly go electronic or acoustic. I really have a love hate relationship with electronics. Lol
Do they make the drums quieter than what the sound off pads do ? Because I got the sound off pads and my mom is saying it’s still too loud .
Hi with this budget, I prefer to buy a cheap e-drum and use it in power off mode.
I stick with my Silent Strokes for the Toms and Bass Drum. I think they are doing quite good there. But for the snare I have the RTom Black Hole because I wanted to have that Snare sound but quieter so i don't annoy family and neighbours which the Silent Stroke wasn't giving me there. So one Black Hole is fine when it comes to costs and I think it is only really important for the Snare. For the rest the Silent Strokes are good enough. At least that is my opinion
Pricey, might as well buy a medium end Alesis electric!
I've read people complaining about uncontrolled buzziness when used on snare drum with snares on... you don't seem to have this problem, or did you have to do anything in order to solve that?
Great review, just one recommendation if we can hear mutes while you play. The speaking level is clear but we do not get accurate sound of the mutes do to the voiceover. Great video.

They don’t always snap on to your drums securely; I bought one that was badly flawed and did snap onto my snare drum so I had to secure it with short bunji cables to keep it from flopping off when I hit it.
I use the Aquarian Super Pads. I live in a condo so I had to get something. Spent $360.00 for 6 pads.
Did someone added a trigger to this and uses with a module?
Would these work with a EAD 10 module?
Ditto on the cost...but, still it's where one's heart is...it'll take awhile to budget it for a 7-piece kit though, I'll keep working with my brushes at midnight
Hey Rob, what advice do you have for tuning your die cast hoop drums?
I've been playing on a die cast hoops kit for years now but I haven't been able to get the sound I want out of them, I used to have a Pearl Session kit with triple flanged hoops that always tuned beautifully.
Now, my Pearl Masters just sound as good.
Maybe I just haven't gotten the hang of tuning die cast hoops.

Die cast hoops tend to have a dryer sound compared to triple flanged hoops, so if you're looking for a more open sound try buying a set of 2.3 millimeter triple flanged hoops for one tom just to try it out and maybe even try combinations between the triple flanged and die cast hoops .

$300 through Sweetwater. Com for 10,12,14,16, and 22" the sound reduction is as advertised. Now my wife and kids can watch TV upstairs and not be annoyed. Pairs well with the L80 Low volume cymbals from zildjian. Played Rude cymbals since the 80's so hopefully Paiste will come up with something better looking. 🤘

Im writting this comment cause i a have a little issue. I live in a rental apartment, so i wont make the soundproof room or a practice room for my kit, cause its a rental space, any time they could ask me to leave and would have to do it. So i found this pads and the Remo Silentstrokes and im debating which one its better for this situation.
For my own good i looke for an apartment that was in the 1st floor, so they are not angry neighbors complaining about the noise that my feet make when playing, and doesnt have the low freq also bothering them; so thats a plus for me, but as said before, i have no "home studio" or "soundproof room" so i wanted to know, without all the mics and stuff you record your videos, how do they sound to your ears, and which one its better?? Remo o RTOM??

I'm seriously tempted with these since I live in an apartment and can only use my electric kit, have you tried theses with the yamaha EAD 10? If the EAD 10 picks it up ok I think I will sell my electric kit and get my hands on some of these!
I use them with EAD10, they pick up pretty good, it’s not an AMAZING high fidelity recording, but if you know how to tune them and mix well, it can sound pretty damn close to a real kit with these

The RTOM Black Hole Practice System 🥁 is an excellent concept 🤘🏻 and I don't know why anyone has thought of this before. BUT the Bass Drum Mesh Head needs to be redesigned. Having it go inside the Bass Drum Hoop would cause it to function better and be more secure and the bonus would be that you wouldn't have to take your Bass Drum Pedal off the hoop, which is totally stupid 🙅🏻♂️. Also there is no 26" Bass Drum size 👎🏻. I would also like to see for the Snare and Floor Tom have larger Sound Patch proportional to the drums larger diameter sizes. From a Creative Director and Drummer :) ✌🏻

I just got these from Sweetwater a couple of days ago. Had the Silent strokes first. The ease of installation, definitely makes these a winner. My only question is about the Bass Pedal Extension. Mine has an upward bend in it that makes the heel of my kick pedal lift up off of the ground. I'm playing on carpet, so I'm not sure if that is the cause of it. The installation manual shows the same bend on their extension, so I'm pretty sure its intentional. Just wanted to know if you have had any experience with this. I play heel up, so this negatively impacts the quality of practice I can get with these. I may end up just putting the thing in a vice and straightening it. Love the Vids BTW. Keep up the great work!!
+Ross Lumus I'm guessing it's because you're on a carpet, assuming it's a thick pile carpet. Once you set the kick on it, it's probably sinking that end of it down a little and raising the other end up. Your pedal should sit pretty flat once you attach it.
Yeah, I contacted RTOM and asked if they would offer an extension without the bend in it for carpet players. I would think a significant portion of the players this would appeal to would be practicing in places like bedrooms, living rooms, etc; places very likely to have carpet. Maybe I'm wrong. Waiting on a response from RTOM. Will keep your viewers updated if anyone is interested in the outcome. Thanks for the response!
Update: I got a response Email from the Chief Engineer at RTOM. He sent me 3 different prototypes to try on carpet. One of them was just like the original, but with no bend in it. Works like a champ, and now my kick pedal sits flat on carpet with no issues. I just can't express how refreshing it is to receive such excellent customer service from any company nowadays. These guys make a remarkable and innovative product that will be a help to drummers for a long time coming. I, for one think they are worth every penny. Also; Not sure if you mentioned it in your vid, but I suggest not using the felt side of your beater on the kick drum pad. Will wear a hole in the dot in the middle. Keep up the great work, Rob!

I just installed these on my kit, 8 10 12 13 14 16 22. They sound great. I had the thuddy silence pads on them before, the control is 100% to my liking.

I've got the Remo silentstroke heads. Have you ever played those and if so, how does these heads compare to the silentstroke heads?
These are similar to the SilentStroke heads. But, as mentioned in the review, the biggest difference is that you don't have to take any extra time to physically swap the heads out. These just sit right on top of the drums. Same response and still get that little bit of tone.
Actually, wouldn't you get MORE tone with the black holes due to the fact the batter head is left in place? With the silentstrokes, there's only the reso head to provide tone.
I heard the feel on the black pads are more realistic plus a better tone than the silentstroke as they tend to have more rebound to it. Would go for this one

My problem is that ill never get to take them off. The neighbors will kill me. Looks like I’m gonna have To give up some feel and go with an electronic set :(
I'm planning to sell my Roland TD25KV and with the cash get some L80 and these Rtoms on my acoustic kit. I would much rather prefer to sit behind an actual kit with the correct sizes than an ekit. What you learn on an e-kit is not always straight forwardly transferable to an acoustic, especially when it comes to dynamics an control. E-kits are small and getting around the kit is easier than an actual kit. Before anyone says it, yes I try to mimic the set up as close to a real kit to help, but its not the same.
I find if someone is going to learn drums, they should always learn on a acoustic first and then go to an e kit, not the other way around.
I'm in this exact same boat right now. I just picked up an acoustic kit and I'm definitely selling my e-kit and picking up some of these, because I've run into the same problem. You get too used to the compact nature of the e-kit and then, when you sit at an acoustic kit, your movement just doesn't quite translate the way you want. I'd rather have the same-same geometry so that I can flow correctly when I play live.
I was gonna purchase my first drumkit (td-17kvx). Should I ditch that thought and go acoustic with L80 zildjians and rtom? I'm REALLY confused on which route to go. I might not be able to remove these at all though. Like they're staying on as long as I'm living in this house.
wow! great video, thanks man. I was looking onto investing on the silent strokes, but i know it's a hassle changing the heads. With my drums being old school square sizes and bigger than most drums (14" tom, 16"& 18" floors, 24" kick, plus the good old 14" snare!) I'm probably looking to invest about $400. I gotta start saving cause i like the fact that i can just put them on top of my tom toms with out any switching around. Thanks for the video. I will show it to the wife so she can help out a little, she will be just as happy as I will. 😁😁😁
Is the rebound realistic or bouncier? And the kick one is too bouncy or?
+Larry Tate As far as pads go, feels pretty good, I think because of the black dot patches which feel pretty good under the sticks. As far as bounce, it's adjustable so you can get them where you want

What keep the bass drum pedal from creeping away? There seems to be nothing securing the extension piece.
EJ Smith there's an adhesive rubber pad that sits on top of the extension piece and the rubber part goes under the bass. there was another guy that demonstrated that.
I have PDP wood hoop toms & bass drum. Will these work on them?
They won’t, actually. The lip sits right between the hoop and the tension rods

Would these paired with Gen 16 cymbals be a good way to quiet a set for a small live sound event?
Revious24 I’m gonna say no on that. Although you do hear a little bit of tone from the shells, it’s really only just enough to make you happy while you’re practicing. It’s not nearly enough to hear in a band setting over other instruments, even in an acoustic setting. As far as using them with triggers, that experiment remains to be seen. But I think actual fitted mesh heads are still recommended for that application
What I am actually thinking would be using them to dampen the over natural volume of the kit then mic them to mix in the house. What would you say about that, or what would you recommend instead?
We currently have a electric set, but don't like the tones or style of it. We would much rather have an acoustic set, but we are in a room small enough that without dampening the sound somehow the kit would be way to loud
I have a small cocktail sit made by Tama. And the smallest Drummond there is AI believe 8 inch. Could you let me know or send me a message? When they're doing special orders, they probably have to make it. I need 8, 10, 12, and 14 for the dass... it's a smaller Tama cocktail set thank you...
