This is inspired by the actual Chinese opera “虹霓關” (in Mandarin: Hong Ni Guan) of early Tang Dynasty. However, here, it was kinda reinterpreted to suit an American narrative of the Chinese and of course promotion for “The Good Earth”
The stage hand is lighting cigarettes and smoking openly, on stage, in full view, during the performance.
