for anyone struggling to get the shadow effect - make sure your first polaroid composition has it's Z axis slightly above 0. a shadow can't be cast on an object that is completely flat against the ground! so set it to like -50 and then each polaroid after that go down another -50. so polaroid 1 is -50, polaroid 2 is -100, polaroid 3 is -150, etc.
thank you very much! This is a really clear and concise step by step tutorial, you helped me to make the perfect childhood montage for my wedding. Cheers!
This is a great tutorial! I need this slideshow to last 3 minutes. Everything looks great until after 30 seconds, everything in the background goes black. Any suggestions?
Yes to do that you need to extend each of the compositions out in time (Right click in a comp and go to comp settings, then increase time). Then extend all the layers out and keep animating them.
Great tutorial! The only part I have a problem with is the motion blur, when I tick the motion blur box and play around with the shutter angle and phase nothing happens, the image never gets blurred EDIT: Don't mind me, I didn't enable motion blur for all layers with motion blur switch!
Hi! I see a lot of problems with the shadow. I also have problems with it. But I noticed that my shadow is inside the white area of the Polaroid instead of around it. Do you know how I can fix this?
Hey, this sounds like the material options are not right on the background layer. Double check the settings of the me background to make sure it accepts shadows.
Very nice tutorial, thanks. Although I ran into a problem in the beginning. When you're adding the spot light and after setting the objects to 3D you grab the Z axis to create the shadow. When I place my cursor on the blue dot it does not show me the Z axis and when I hold and move it, only the polaroid picture moves. Any idea what's wrong? I tried to repeat from the beginning a few times, same issue...
Ok, make sure you have the correct layer selected first. You could then just try to manually adjust the z axis using the position properties. Hit p on the keyboard to bring this up. Then manually adjust the z number on the left to adjust the axis. If you do this you might also have to adjust the point of interest if it’s the light. Hope that helps!
Apologies my bad English. the thing that is not maintained here and i think is one of the important things; is to place the BG comp. on the top of your frame and photo, then it works properly. But I don't know why 😑
Hey Victor, hard to say without seeing but the shadow needs three elements to work 1) The light source, make sure its set in the correct position. 2) the polaroid needs to accept the light source. 3) The background needs to accept the shadow not the light. This is where i would look in detail to check if everything matches what ive done in the video. Hope that helps.
Hey Maxtor, the shadows need three elements to work the light, subject (Polaroid) and surface (wood). Go to each part of the video and make sure all your settings match those three. It will be because of one of those your shadows don’t work. You can always take a screenshot and send to me to have a look. Hope that helps FPfx
Hey! When you ask us to press alt and option, I can't find a key on my keyboard called that... I use an Asus, do you know any key that does the same thing as option? Thanks for the tutorial
Hey, its either the Alt or Opt key 3 one in from bottom left. If your keyboard doesn't have either of those keys just search google for the equivalent key combination. Hope that helps.
I would double check the layer properties for the Polaroid. It may be accepting shadows only. Or you have another layer between the Polaroid and light source.
Try holding shift when dragging left or right on the z axis. If not, then go into the transform settings and manually adjust the z position by dragging on the numbers.
Question, I am new to After Effects and I wanted to know the proper way of rendering Layout 1 in the video. I did the effect step by step and just finished it. I didn't see the render options for mp4 so I render it to avi. However, it shook me when I saw the finished video files size. It took *1.93 GB* for a 30 sec video. How to fix it?
Hi, I too can't get the Polaroid to cast the shadow you demonstrate - I have copied the 3 elements required exactly from your tutorial - with no luck having tried 50 times or more! Any ideas?
Hi Sue, there may be a number of things going on here. Most of the issues people will have will be with the material options of the background layer not accepting shadows. If you have double checked the light placement then the issue may lay with the background. Hope that helps.
So for some reason the polaroid image I downloaded from the link does not appear with the gray and white squares - rather, it appears with a black center and the images don't fit in it. What am I doing wrong?
Hey, you need to turn the transparency background on yours is set to black. It’s the little button bottom middle of viewer. You can create a pre comp the same size and fill the difference with a white or scale your image larger and trim the edges off. Hope that helps
Thanks Flat Pack! The default color for transparency is black - I just moved the photo layer behind it. Sorry! I'm a little new, but thank you so much for the response. Really appreciate it
Hi, thanks for the comment. Generally this means the Polaroid is moving beyond the background plane. Try switching your view to “2 view” this will give you a view from front and above. It will make it easier to see where the edge is from a side on angle. Hope that helps you out!

thanks a lot. Very useful
this is just my opinion, if you have problem about no shadow on your photo try to adjust the shadow diffusion in the light setting
Thanks for sharing Rolfer
Wow.....just wow........

great work
So much work for a basic girl! Is there an app that can do this ? Love it though
How do I activate the line editor, my motion paths don't show
Hi! I see a lot of problems with the shadow. I also have problems with it. But I noticed that my shadow is inside the white area of the Polaroid instead of around it. Do you know how I can fix this?
cool bro
nice job
Good Video... But Need More Depth Tutorial on Graph Editing... Thanks
Muito obrigado! 🙏🏼
I have a problem, when I have to replace composition 1 by 2, dragging it over it does not copy any of its attributes or animation. Thank you a lot!
I followed the steps but the photo is not casting a shadow on the table when I move the light.
Hey, this sounds like the material options are not right on the background layer. Double check the settings of the me background to make sure it accepts shadows.
That's exactly the same problem I'm having....great tutorial, but the shadow dropping isn't working, i don't know why.
I encounter problem when dropping a shadow on polaroid please help

Thanks, that helped. Still don't know why I couldn't grab the Z axis but adjusting it under position works too.
Question, is it possible to also include a video snipet into the polaroid frames?
Is it possible? Or how to do so? :)
Learning this software right now and I am so curious.
Thanks for the tutorial. Had to make my own polaroid pictures to hold my pictures/videos, since yours aren't free...
Thanks but no result when i activate the movment flux !

when I started playing the video, the last photo is covering the others. How can I fix that?
The layer is too far forward in 3D space. Select the layer and move backwards on the ‘z axis’ behind the other layers.
Is it possible to do this effect in premiere pro? If so, could you make a tutorial for that as well please?
Is there an open source out there that can do the same?
Hey! When you ask us to press alt and option, I can't find a key on my keyboard called that... I use an Asus, do you know any key that does the same thing as option? Thanks for the tutorial

4:26 if I grab the blue button, the polaroid composition is just moving.
Make sure your selecting the light layer and not the composition layer at that point.
@@FlatPackFX i did it. but the shadow appears on top of the polaroid.

Search on my channel for “how to export from after effects” there is a video which will give you better settings. Thanks
Flat Pack FX oooh thank you thank you so much 😄
Cant rotate 7:33. teach me how.
i cant rotate with X i am only able to move it to the right and left

Is the polaroid.png image free for commercial use?
Yes
@@FlatPackFX So I don't need to credit?
Hi, I too can't get the Polaroid to cast the shadow you demonstrate - I have copied the 3 elements required exactly from your tutorial - with no luck having tried 50 times or more! Any ideas?
Hi Sue, have you checked your 3D renderer? Make sure it's on Classic and not Ray-Traced, worked for me. Cheers

Thx for your thoughts on my problem - I'll give it a go - Happy New Year
No worries, if you get really stuck send me some screenshots and I will try and have a look.
Thank you for suggesting - yes, sadly it's on Classic 3D already :(
