- Also known as the C-45 "Bucket of Bolts." This flight was offered through the CAF (Commemorative Air Force) air show at KBUR. We departed from runway 15 and flew out to Santa Monica, up the Malibu coast, then back to BUR for a low pass fly-by. I am pleased to share my flight with a perspective from the co-pilot's seat.
My fellow spotter friend Jay, also took a flight on this plane with footage from inside the cabin. You can see his Beech-18 video here

Your video is GREAT. Its quality is exceptional and above all I love the fact that there is no music to annoy the viewers, just the beautiful engines roar instead. Thanks for posting it.
Armafly I’m glad you enjoyed the flight :). I’ve since learned, use music where fitting. If your goal is to take people along for the ride, let the engine sound be the hero.
Radials, man, radials!!!
Great vid!! My Dad, as chief pilot for the old Auto-Lite Corp. (Toledo, OH), flew an '18' from 1940-1958. Flew a Staggerwing for two prior to buying the 18. Took delivery of it new at Beechcraft in Wichita. I flew in it many times as a young boy. Dad's history went back to 1919, when he was a flight instructor at the Presidio in San Francisco, then flew air mail up/down the west coast and midwest in the 20s, then early airline pilot in the 30s. He had quite a life!!
What an awesome history in aviation your dad had.
Well, You can love JT engines, but really did a very nice job capturing the music of this old radials, like we can hear after 3:27. Thank you very much for sharing and don´t closing your window!!
Jose Marmontel I’m thrilled you enjoyed the video. JT engines are indeed my favorite, but every engine is deserving to be heard :)
3:49 to REALLY hear them sing!
Takeoff power is the best on a radial.
Look the way he fly the plane i do believe the pilot knew well the characteristic the B 18. Amazing skills
My father RIP, rebuilt many of those birds for U.S. Navy at NAS Pensacola. Beautiful plane. Loved the PB-Y as well.
whetedge How awesome! He was lucky to work around these classic radial engine aircraft.
The last word in this video is "Awesome"
I agree :)
Beautiful aircraft! and the sweet sound of the engines...
Love it!
Eli Cohen - MisterMedia Haha yes. That last word definitely sums it up. Glad you enjoyed the video!
That was such a fantastic video. Thank you for making it & sharing it!
+Liam O'Donnell Thanks for watching!
Great job Phillip, I love these Beech 18's (AKA C-45) as you know I went on this twice like you did in the co-pilot's seat & in the cabin.
A huge thank you to the Commemorative Air Force team and the pilot Jonathan Oliver for the awesome flights.
Best airplane video I ever saw, I love all the old controls and switches in the cockpit, designed in the 30s, still works just fine
track1219 While I’m always trying to improve my craft and video quality, I’m glad people still find enjoyment with these casual style flight videos, not to mention the older aircraft. Nothing like manual levers and steam gauges. Thanks very much for watching!
That is one sweet Bucket Of Bolts! Great video!
+ti11a Thanks! Glad you liked it.
They are a beautiful looking Aircraft, love the sound of those Radials in flight. Thanks for sharing this video, fantastic!
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed the video. Cannot beat the sound of radial engines.
+LoveJT8D I certainly enjoyed your video and those Beech aircraft would have to be one of the best looking vintage planes. I live in central Australia and when I was young I remember DC3s flying over my home as we were close to the local airstrip. Also Caribou military planes would arrive and they sounded magnificent. Anyway you are certainly lucky to have flown in that lovely plane and thanks for sharing your footage!
Agree one of my favorite sounds is that of a radial
Great video. Love the scene with the T6
charles tew Thanks Charles! That was a pretty cool moment during the flight. Lots of traffic in that SoCal airspace.
I love flying the old twin beech. Good stable airplane.
Ronnie Black Absolutely. Built like a tank.
Great video and audio. I just took a ride on this bird yesterday and had a blast. Huntsville Alabama.
Ray McKenzie Awesome! Glad you had a chance to take a flight.
I can just smell that cockpit from here!
I am fascinated by these old beauties.. Howard 500 is a gorgeous plane as well.. this video was amazing, would to have one of these planes :D or at least have a ride in one..
I grew up in a town that was the corporate headquarters for a major oil company. During the 40s and 50s their two Beech 18s would depart sometime around 8:00 a.m. nearly every day. We lived about three miles away from the airport and the turn out after a takeoff on runway 17 would come right by our house. I could sit on my front porch on a summer morning and hear the power come up for the take off roll. I'll never forget the sound of the two radial engines coming to life! :-)
That is really really neat! I would have loved to experience the sights and sounds of day-to-day operations of old radial engine aircraft. I am grateful for the various air shows today that still make it possible to fly on one. Thanks for watching!
Gutpile Charlie it wasn't one of these was it?
www.controller.com/listingsdetail/aircraft-for-sale/BEECHCRAFT-D18S/1952-BEECHCRAFT-D18S/1369597.htm
TheDudeofDudes No, it was Phillips Petroleum Company in Bartlesville, Oklahoma. We also had an office of Cities Service Oil Company and they also operated two Beech D18s from our airport.
I was going to say that would have been a hell of a coincidence. I've been ogling that Beech 18 since I saw it earlier today. The thing is spotless.
Excellent footage. Great plane.
Bhad Ghuy Thanks! Glad you enjoyed the video.
Certainly sounds like a 'bucket of bolts' and I love it!
+DAM FLA Not too many passenger planes sound like that today ;)
I've got a friend that's an A&P guy. He keeps telling me to learn to fly jets, but I can't let go of the round engines! Especially in Canada going fishing with Rusty Myers! The 18 with floats on it gives me one severe male reaction!!!
Incredible vid Philip! Liked & favorited! Thanks for the taggage action :)
This particular plane travels around with the Commemorative Air Force to various air shows. You should be able to find one of their air shows close by. They seemed to travel around starting in the spring.
Awesome!!! More old birds like these!
I wish there were more old birds with these radial engines flying around. It is such a wonderful sound.
Amazing video!
Thanks for watching Ed. It's definitely one of those flights you can just keep going on and not get tired of it.
Coming to Nashua over July 4th! Along with the T-6 and the B-29. Psyched. Psyched I am.
AugustMeteors Awesome! Are you going to take a flight?
Probably. Would love to go on the B-29, but it's expensive! Hell, would love to fly on all of them. Flew on the B-25 last fall. So many lovely warbirds, so few dollars!
AugustMeteors I hear you, that's one reason why I haven't been on FiFi yet or some of the larger bombers. Hopefully one day. On the other hand, the Bucket of Bolts was very reasonable around the 67-70 dollar range for a 25 minute ish flight.
Yes, it's around that now, maybe a tad more. When we did the B-25 it was $800 for two of us for a half hour, and we just went and did it. Can sustain _one_ impulse purchase. Can't make a habit of it! So it's budget from here on in. The big bombers are worth budgeting for--you just hope you live long enough to get to all of them.
That was a blast!
El Kabong Glad you liked the vid!
Very cool. I flew one of the Beach 18s in Valdosta, GA once. Would love to fly one again. Just sad when the pilot lands on the displaced threshold part prior to the runway. A bit of poor planning on his part. That runway at KBUR is plenty long enough to put it down ten feet beyond the threshold. Oops! ;-)
Awesome! Do you happen to remember what organization your Beech 18 flight was with?
The 18 rates just behind the C-47/DC3 as my all time favorites. Thanks for posting this. I wonder how many noticed the crowded sky at 5:36. That Cessna was a little close, wasn't he?
30twodor That’s SoCal airspace for you ;). Glad you enjoyed the vid.
Nice! I love old school fly'in! I flew right seat in this plane with Matt Younkin last summer. Scenery for your flight was much better though, mine was in the flat lands of Oklahoma ;-)
+TonyTheFlyer Awesome! Sounds like you also had a very enjoyable flight on this aircraft. I do however miss the flat lands of my home state OH sometimes :)
I want to say it's a generator. In the video I shot of the B-29 two weeks ago you can hear something similar they engage before the props begin to crank. I can only assume it's a generator that provides the power to spin the prop during startup.
Fuel pump perhaps?
This was my ride a couple weeks ago. Fun!
Awesome! Glad you got to experience the Bucket of Bolts.
1:51 Beechcraft's finest instrument technology of 1920!
The Bourdon Touchscreen! 😂
LOve that sound puts me to sleep every time
Nothing beats the sound of a radial engine :)
Oh so true
The 727 is definitely on my bucket list. Where there's a will there's a way ;) I also hope someday.
Round engines make some nice sounds.
+cmardeux Yes they do!
Thanks for watching! Did you fly with your dad on the D's and E's ? This was my first flight on a radial engine plane and was definitely a memorable one.
Great airplanes, especially on floats!
Dmac K Wow, didn’t know the twin Beech has a float version. That would be awesome to fly on.
This is really awesome
+Salihu salihug Thanks!
WOW ! What’s with the Cessna @ 5:37 ? That looks fairly close !
Had some other people notice that too. I think I had a headset on, but don't remember any transmissions that indicated avoiding other aircraft. I'm assuming we were flying VFR on such a short flight.
That sound is the electric fuel pump. These airplanes came out with wobble pumps, used for starting and emergencies. Many have been converted to electric due to ease of use and safety.
Operated 4 models back in the 70s, early 80s. D, E, C, G. Best was E-18 I bought from Central Flying Service, Little Rock. Flew sched. Emery & Federal overloads. Over & Back. Amazon. Wild Bill Callahan.
looks badass!!
Beautiful!
Anybody pickup on the C-172 at 05:36 on a near miss w/ the T-6?
David Reid I had a few others say it was pretty close. They probably had each other in sight but not much reaction time.
Dont expect quick reaction times from a C172/182 owner. They are Turkeys.
At 5:35, was the AT-6 aware he had traffic heading right towards him?
+Sebastian Scopellite I thought that Cessna was a bit close, but not sure if any of that is an illusion. The T-6 did seem to pull left a little bit at that time.
Looked close to me too...and at the same altitude.
Awesome video; thanks for sharing! Man, you can retrofit any of these older aircraft with GPS units! What was the first thing that the pilot turned on in the cockpit? Was it a generator, or battery?
Did you really touch down before the displace threshold? Shame if you did!
did i ever tell you how lucky you are?
Don't forget that one of the twin beech could do aerobatic.
William Murtha Awesome! Quite an agile plane for its style.
Soooo Cool!
pixamite1 Thanks! Glad you enjoyed the video.
I must congratulate you and a perfect video of the 18.....too bad the old girl needs straps to hold her together these days...great quality video; she's a delight to pilot
So glad you liked the video! It was definitely a fun aircraft to fly on. Have you actually piloted one before?
Yes, sure...marvelous flying airplane. very stable, but watchout on xwind t/ols….also have lots of time in your favorite engine JT8D, JT3D, et al
triplanelover Awesome! Nice to know another classic jet engine lover.
JT8Ds great engine; the best sounding was the JT3Ds used on 707 and DC8s. So musical I could set my thrust by the sound on final
No checklist? I hope that was simply edited out.
É uma linda máquina.
I wouldn't trust this olden wings my soul is more precious than the fun out of it, but I cant deny the fact that its fantastic
+sam smith Even experiencing the sound of this aircraft from the ground is fantastic in itself :)
I totally agree with you,
I've flown this plane!
That is really neat! Which airport did you fly out of? Or multiple airports?
LoveJT8D
I flew it with the Commemorative Air Force out of Falcon Field (KFFC) in GA. My picture is of me in the CAF's P-51 Mustang.
+iflyfa18s Big deal. I jumped out of Bill Lomely's Beech 18! It was opening day at F45, North County Airport in Palm Beach. 'Happened in 1994 with the American Eagles during Pratt Whitney's Family Day. Nice plane eh?
3:32
it may have been called a bucket of bolts but that's where your airmail came from back in the day. Back when airmail was a big deal. I did a valve timing on 1 of those pratts in a@p school back in the 70's great engine. But the pilot needs to mind it. I was a mechanic my roommate was a pilot endless arguments
Must have been awesome to work on those radial engines.
bains71atyahoo Man, to be a fly on the wall in that room, lol!
Yer a lucky guy!
Hopefully this air show goes on tour again. The Beech 18 flights were very reasonably priced and the majority of riders were booking flights on that plane.
open Windows
Yep! It was pretty cool. Definitely need hearing protection of some sort but cool to hear the sound of the props with open windows.
That’s got to be the worlds ugliest old 18
