🕹 Musk discusses the simulation theory, arguing that the rapid advancement of video game technology implies a high probability that our reality is a simulation. 01:18:33 🚗 Musk believes fully autonomous driving is technically possible within two years, but regulatory approval may take an additional year. 01:21:30 🤖 While Musk favors freedom and opposes banning humans from driving, he suggests that license requirements for manual driving may become more stringent. 01:22:38 🗳 Elon Musk envisions a direct democracy on Mars, with people voting directly on issues to minimize the potential for corruption.
Indeed. And for that reason, I very much hope he is NOT among the first (or second or third) group of persons to go to Mars. He's far too valuable for that kind of risk. Once they've established that it's safe by having performed at least three successful round trips, then he should definitely go. It'll take a while to build his elaborate temple and throne anyhow.
Yet, it is written that there shall come a grand man, whom Elon will bow before and tie his sandals and pour myrrh and incense upon his feet and he shall be called God Emperor Trump
Woah, Kara Swisher contributed absolutely nothing to this interview other than cat jokes and cutting Elon off. I was glad to see Walt step in at some points and drop a decent question. Other then that, always surprised at how humble Elon is with his ideas and opinions. Top notch.

You can tell by the way he speaks his words he is thinking so hard to take huge complicated concepts and break them down into simplistic words so that I or we can understand him. Genius
+SwisherSurgeon it's actually both he's trying to be understood but he can hardly formulate the ideas in his mind in such a way that is not too long or boring to the audience this happens to me a lot and I end up saying the same thing mamy times in many versions which puts people off
Certainly, I like the way he does not answer questions yes or no at the offset and instead employs a logical argument first before giving a yes/no or a probability. Somewhat similar to what happens behind the screen of a calculator; and it is true that people may not appreciate the depth at which he reasons, which he compensates by simplifying his answers
yaniv148: you should ride the subway sometime and look at the manspreading going on, you would come away with new appreciation of ivasion of personal space.
Huge shout out to one whom has absolutely propelled in all that he applies his energy and time towards with an awesome team on board. Watching this video again and holy smokes 2016 to 2020...💪👍
Actually you can see how the two of questioners are not letting him send all the messages and for me it almost looks like they are trying to dishonor him.
I've watched ALOT of his talks and squelch (electronics definition) from the interviewers is very common. ...but it doesn't matter because he is also compensating for their effect. ...when he talks, he tends to concentrate his major ideas into bite sized "thought" packets. I think he learned to do that from having to compensate for his tendency to stutter when talking. ...he even said himself that he wants negative feedback.
He clearly is frustrated that technology is not up to the task of his mental prototypes. 7 billion people moving at a snails pace. If I had apples cashhord, I would build Elon’s car and battery factories for him. The future would be here in a mere 15 years
+Opel Corsa That's alright, there are numerous science/tech channels which would explain what exactly he's talking about. These interviewers didn't do a good job in my opinion, the only redeeming thing about this video is that the audience asked some very good questions which helped us get to know Elon even more.
I think Elon is a great thinker, but no so great of a speaker. Which is fine, everybody has his strengths and weaknesses. The interviewer just shouldn't interrupt him when he's explaining things.
Urxiel . Diego Vera well taking the info from the science /tech channels does not mean that it the same that we actually take from him as 'non explained form' I believe that every one has his own personal way of tranmeting the information
My thoughts exactly. At least they could have done some research, watch previous interviews by other people who actually had a working knowledge of the subject matter, and just shut up once they asked a question. Very annoying...
All the interviewers are so inferior to his intelligence and they are aggressive and controlling. He is none of those things. The disparity becomes so obvious that its quite painful to watch. They guy kept interrupting him. I hope that was his last interview with them.
The interviewers are the best tech journalists in the world. They have interviewed him before and have more knowledge about the domain than you can think. And they found Recode. On the other hand, Musk can learn some storytelling skills. Not everyone is impressed with technical jargon.
lol technical jargon he's a freakin engineer.. a skill which everyone should learn in this day and age.. you're the one who's speaking with an antiquated language..
Are you watching "BIGBANG THEORY'" to much? Is your name Sheldon Cooper or what? Or is it that Ya don't get it because your IQ is to high,....... for the less highly strung episodes in life,... maybe? :)))
+Magyar Bence I don't know how to respond to this. Is there a reason why you write "Ya" instead of "you" and capitalize it when it is in the middle of a sentence and not a proper noun? Also "big" and "bang" are two different words, not one word. Your use of the ellipsis is entirely incorrect. Yes, I am Sheldon Cooper from the popular TV show "Big Bang Theory". "Cyan Cooper" is just one of my pseudonyms. Do you have a problem with my intelligence quotient? Despite my clearly superior intellect, I cannot tell what the point of your comment is.
Elon tries to explain the intricacies and future implications of personal Artificial Intelligence via neural lace I/O interface. Kara Swisher: "So Elon, what do you do for fun fun? Anything?" This woman is so clueless it's actually painful to watch.
IDK how people don't get her dry humor... I swear to god this is hard to watch. She is his friend and clearly isn't an expert but its comedic you stupid pleb.
It'd be comedic if this was a personal conversation. In a public interview she just got in the way of the audience learning more about the subject Elon was expanding on. Tip: Personal insults do not make you sound above "plebs".
he was soo nice with such dumb people ... but if you reckon most people in the world are even dumber... so someone as him deals with making things to extremely dumb people... I mean think of Kardashians... very rich and dumb... these are the people deals with everyday... unfortunately.
I suggest you go back and watch some of the old AllThingsD interviews with Steve Jobs - also with Walt Mossberg and Kara Swisher as the interviewers. It's the same thing. She is simply embarrassing. It's like she's not even listening to the answers - or doesn't understand them. She is a terrible interviewer, always has been.
Despite the negative comments, this is better than anything on TV. The only thing better would be to make this even longer. I loved how they allowed Elon to relax and fully answer the (few) audience questions.
if the interviewers are reading the comments for the love of god DONT interrupt the guest every 20 seconds!! absolutely zero tact. Elon, youre a living legend.

He always speaks in such a disjointed staccato and it probably reasons out on many factors I'd think. It's likely he contemplates these issues in 4 dimensions, and discusses them similarly when in comfortable company. I bet he bounces into and over subjects wildly, and those who are familiar and can follow this Tigger like processing see a much more comfortable speaker. He will never be able to speak his thought processes in cogent and cohesive fashion--he's thinking about multiple tangents (bounce), constantly introducing, testing (bounce) and revising the ideas as he goes. And he may visualize these, and have to convert (bounce) those images into words to convey the ideas where he has already eliminated a thread of the idea (bounce) he was pursuing and beginning to explain (bounce). The woman isn't as bad as a lot of people seem to think, she's more Pigglet acting as a traffic cop trying to keep it more main stream--KISS-- keep it short and sweet or (simple for stupid). But she misses the point (bounce) of a mind that works like his. If you step back and (bounce) just wait after baiting the hook, you'll see his mind weave through the obvious (bounce) (bounce) and start to associate unrelated concepts (bounce), non linear processes (bounce), and an intuitive debate (bounce) take shape within. And (bounce) he does not explain in generalities, (bounce) and is aware that he often confuses (bounce) and looses an audience when he answers the question asked, (bounce) then answers the unasked questions he believes important or necessary (bounce) to the question already answered. Either that or Cocaine is a very important food group in his diet -- (bounce) -- IMO
***** what i meant was that as quickly as his mind seems to be functioning that it isn't possible. If he had a speech prepared or scripted answers which were followed, I'm certain he could speak fluidly. But I have not seen any example of it. He even seemed to ad lib the proceedings during his annual shareholders meeting. I certainly was not making light of or faulting this trait. I do not advocate restricting mental processes for any reason.
I understand, but I believe it is definitely possible. His upbringing has allowed him to avoid fluid communication, like many other engineers and scientists. There are ways of teaching the mind how to ultimately speak more fluid regardless of circumstances
The future is bright, if government can learn to get out of the way of entrepreneurs like Mr Musk...and let them bring us the future as fast as they can.
The government was in cahoots with a lot of big business, in both space and oil industries, going against things like Tesla. Those subsidies Tesla gets a fraction of what the oil industry gets. Get informed...
Unfortunately not all entrepreneurs goals are as benign and noble as Elon's. Most seem to care more about their own well-being than advancing humanity forward. It takes a great mind along with a heart to rise above selfishness and use their resources for the good of everyone. Rare stuff among the corporate world.
This guy is more nuanced and demonstrates wisdom in very subtle ways. I believe he's going to impact history in such a way that he will be remembered 500 years from now.
2021 he pretty much already has. He brought us PayPal, the First good electric car, first reusable rocket. First person to land a rocket. Hes already already made history in many different fields, all while starship is still in its infancy and could end up trumping all his other achievements.
I gain more respect for Mr. Musk's goals, principals and foresight every day. That said, I find that these two interviewers missed a great opportunity talking to such an accomplished man with their rude and dismissive tone. Kara Swisher's invasion of Elons space is shameful.
The best format for interviewing Elon would be to have no time limit, and to not interrupt or talk over him at any time. In fact, just write him the questions and let him do a q&a.
When the female host insists on having her foot between Elon’s legs things get awkward. She has him trapped, he can’t swivel left or right, he bumps her and she still doesn’t move her foot. If genders were reversed her actions would be unacceptable on a grand scale
Doesn't being self conscious prove we are not a simulation? And anyhow, a simulation of what? Other beings that have a higher level of consciousness than us? Is that even possible? As it is we tend to want to 'numb ourselves down' as we have a hard time handling the amount consciousness we have. Good try Matrix but somehow don't think so. I think the gut feeling of the human race is we ARE being watched on real time. But by whom is the question.
OMG at 5:55 Musk says it's "Impossible" to have the booster rocket return to the launch site and you all want to talk about the lady interviewers foot (Hell it ain't even in a stiletto." SpaceX has solved the "Return to home base" in 4 years That is the point.
Michelle Gibson People tend to think that the way our brain works is much more complicated and special than it really is because we still don’t understand it.
Michelle Gibson It’s not comparing ourselves to other beings or anything like that. The idea is that we put ourselves into a simulation. Consider 10,000 years from now, technology is absolutely insane and the world is crumbling, so we put ourselves into a simulation to save our reality. It’s just a theory, and a probable one at that.
i wanted to dislike this interview because of the female interviewer but Elon still finds a way to exude knowledge i have to like it.. I keep saying Elon is the most under appreciated genius of our time
I believe how he speaks is incredibly genius. You need to read and understand between the lines. I am glad he is not like a picture perfect presenter, absolutely not. How he absorbs and replies is just genius...
I get what you mean, sure, it would sound more like an audiobook or Steve Jobs speech. But he's Elon Musk because he's socially less a facade and more a human being. It adds to his charm and reality bound personality
Agree 100 % Have you watched Vitalik Buterin? Shares some of Elon's speech/thought patterns... Very nerdy but I love listening to them 'think' out loud.
Hi Recode - Elon Musk is claiming in court that this was a deep fake and he really didn't say this. Any chance you guys care to chime in as to the validity of this video and if he did in fact speak at this event?
I love how he repeatedly says "well, if nobody does it then I guess I will do it". He encourages others to innovate but understands that not many people have the drive, ambitions, and priorities that he has. I wish I had the opportunity to explore and help move some of his ideas forward. Perhaps one day I'll be able to join one of his ventures.
Interview technique does not include asking questions that are unanswerable. I guess she didn't have a real dimension of Musk's accomplishments so far.
As of today (4/27/23), ole Elon still hasn't pulled the required driverless permit in California to begin L3 and higher testing. Madoff would be proud.
Bobby Shah yeah when people ask him about his cars or rockets he is completely honest to the merits of the technology. He doesn’t go on platitudes trying to sell the product and he doesn’t take any unnecessary criticism either.
i got that my self.... lol typical Americans... some one starts talking about space and advancements in tech and all the sudden they look at you and think whats this insane person going on about lol.....
His discussion of the car battery opened my eyes. Lithium comprises 3% of the battery? It's mostly nickel and graphite? That changes our perception of what is required in terms of materials and not the "rare earth" elements often discussed by critics. He said they could build an electric car with a 400 mile range but the cost would be too high. That blows me away.
Yeah, apparently, he's not trying to increase the 5% yearly improvement on battery density with the GigaFactory, but probably to lower the cost of production.
Mr. Elon Musk, nice eloquent gentleman, is amazingly smart at such a young age and has an outstanding memory! Thank you kindly to those who were involved in producing this educational and happy video!♥! (Personal goal: to live and die on Mars)
I saw a woman brushing Elon's shoulder a little bit too harshly the other day in public, while passing him. I followed that person home. Want to go throw eggs at her house and then murder her family??
i will be downloading this and editing out most of the stupid comments made by the interviewers, but as always it's excellent listening to elon's ideas and strategies. he is almost single-handedly changing our world for the better
He'll go down in history as the man who saved civilization by sending civilization to the stars. Elon should be decorated, he's a hero in my eyes. Go Elon Musk!!.
Watching this interview and Bezos you can really see why Musk is so special among his peers, you can tell from his answers that this is not a man just sitting at the top, but is very much hands on in the works he leads, he can be asked very detail questions and answers them effortlessly without needing to rely on cooperate speak..
Amazing range of knowledge and interests. Goes from explaining orbital mechanics, Mars colonization, battery technologies, autonomous cars, future transport, and CYBORG implants?!
in the future I believe people will look at oaths as something silly and unreliable, and they will wonder how society ever worked like that, so we probably could, but why would we even bother :))
Well being Elons mind and Knowledge he would tell you that he couldn't be a time traveller because gravitational pull only allows time travelling into the future. Time travelling back in time is impossible
They needed interviewers who follow SpaceX and Tesla's work. The questions of the lady interviewer indicate little preparation. Its not fair to fly Elon in and waste his time and that of the viewers
Wamuyu Gatheru I also thought so....the lady is completely clueless but musk did very well in answering the questions in a way his audience would expect!

Elon is proving to be the single most valuable human

Other then that, always surprised at how humble Elon is with his ideas and opinions. Top notch.

I see it more as him ensuring that he doesn't say something that will be taken wrong.

he's trying to be understood but he can hardly formulate the ideas in his mind in such a way that is not too long or boring to the audience
this happens to me a lot and I end up saying the same thing mamy times in many versions which puts people off
He tried his hardest to not say the word implants. That would have sparked a massive forest fire portraying him as being the son of satan.
Certainly, I like the way he does not answer questions yes or no at the offset and instead employs a logical argument first before giving a yes/no or a probability. Somewhat similar to what happens behind the screen of a calculator; and it is true that people may not appreciate the depth at which he reasons, which he compensates by simplifying his answers

in the past; he's trying his absolute hardest to drag the future here.

When Elon hungs up and goes "uh... eh..." its cause he is trying to process information and explain it in simple terms us mortals can understand.
I would really like to see Elon go pedal to the metal with his thoughts, it would be really interesting to see what he really wanted to say.
Maybe we wouldn't understand him.. but yeah, it would be interesting to hear what he wants to say in his own words..

Either that or Cocaine is a very important food group in his diet -- (bounce) -- IMO
never say never, anyone can learn how to speak fluently and effectively
*****
what i meant was that as quickly as his mind seems to be functioning that it isn't possible.
There are ways of teaching the mind how to ultimately speak more fluid regardless of circumstances

i wanted to dislike this interview because of the female interviewer but Elon still finds a way to exude knowledge i have to like it..
I keep saying Elon is the most under appreciated genius of our time
1:02:15
The only billionaire in the world that can go into explaining how gravity works during an interview.
i dunno, i bet Richard Branson could.... he's crashed enough hot air balloons :D
Trudeau explained quantum physics in a press conference and the German chancellor is an Astro physicist. So there are some smart people out there
Stop interrupting him, sheesh.
what a visionary ... can watch him speak for hours.. worth every minute of it
I believe how he speaks is incredibly genius. You need to read and understand between the lines. I am glad he is not like a picture perfect presenter, absolutely not. How he absorbs and replies is just genius...
+Roelf Veldhuis totally agree with your statement
I get what you mean, sure, it would sound more like an audiobook or Steve Jobs speech. But he's Elon Musk because he's socially less a facade and more a human being. It adds to his charm and reality bound personality
Agree 100 % Have you watched Vitalik Buterin? Shares some of Elon's speech/thought patterns... Very nerdy but I love listening to them 'think' out loud.
I think part of it might be: How can I explain this so they understand?
Hi Recode - Elon Musk is claiming in court that this was a deep fake and he really didn't say this. Any chance you guys care to chime in as to the validity of this video and if he did in fact speak at this event?
"It wasnt me like shaggy"-ElonMusk LMFAO
I love how he repeatedly says "well, if nobody does it then I guess I will do it". He encourages others to innovate but understands that not many people have the drive, ambitions, and priorities that he has. I wish I had the opportunity to explore and help move some of his ideas forward. Perhaps one day I'll be able to join one of his ventures.
It seems like a recurring thought in Elon's head is: "This has to be done. If no one will do it, I will."
Musk should've gotten an applause when giving credit to all of those employed at Tesla.
I'm more informed than the lady conducting the interview.
its likely your not. its called interview technique.
The look on her face tells me otherwise. Unless she's a great actor too
Interview technique does not include asking questions that are unanswerable. I guess she didn't have a real dimension of Musk's accomplishments so far.
its likely shi is. 1:00:32 - she is so stupid omg...
To be fair most people are. She is clueless.
Elon is always such a delight to watch speak. I could listen to him for hours and hours!
You have to give Elon alot of credit for being patient, and witty while relaying the information to the interviewers.
Especially from the old crony boomer with the bad boomer jokes..
That's his only "Actual" skill! He can't create things himself, but he's good at parroting information and hiring actual engineers! Which he is not!
Credit fir lying as well!
He's currently claiming in a lawsuit that this entire interview is a deepfake lie.
As of today (4/27/23), ole Elon still hasn't pulled the required driverless permit in California to begin L3 and higher testing. Madoff would be proud.
She's probably the worst interviewer I've ever watched.....
super unprofessional too
agreed
I dont see it that way, i just see people talking having a conversation and it seems to me they know each other at a personal level.
+darklit i dont agree, love.
Agreed after hearing her first two lines.
someone has to do it. if someone don't, I guess I'll have to do it. - Elon Musk
There's something about Elon's weirdness that makes me comfortable trusting him.
It took me a long time to figure this out. Elon is just a poor public speaker but he is just so damn sincere that he is eminently believable....
Bobby Shah yeah when people ask him about his cars or rockets he is completely honest to the merits of the technology. He doesn’t go on platitudes trying to sell the product and he doesn’t take any unnecessary criticism either.
They clearly didn’t get what Elon was saying about horizontal velocity being needed for orbit
i got that my self.... lol typical Americans... some one starts talking about space and advancements in tech and all the sudden they look at you and think whats this insane person going on about lol.....
Is there a policy against allowing the guest to complete a thought?
His discussion of the car battery opened my eyes. Lithium comprises 3% of the battery? It's mostly nickel and graphite? That changes our perception of what is required in terms of materials and not the "rare earth" elements often discussed by critics. He said they could build an electric car with a 400 mile range but the cost would be too high. That blows me away.
Yeah, apparently, he's not trying to increase the 5% yearly improvement on battery density with the GigaFactory, but probably to lower the cost of production.
Just horrible interviewer. They have zero connection to the topic or the interviewee
Mr. Elon Musk, nice eloquent gentleman, is amazingly smart at such a young age and has an outstanding memory! Thank you kindly to those who were involved in producing this educational and happy video!♥! (Personal goal: to live and die on Mars)
This woman was unnecessarily there...
ffs woman ... she's eminent in her field, asks good questions and doesn't ask Musk to break contract with any of his team. That man though *facepalm*
Valerie Pallaoro Right...'Do you want to shoot your mouth off about that'? How embarrassing.
..
1:02:53 When you are in the middle of a very serious conversation and suddenly some one asks... "what you do for fun? anything?"
Seriously??!!!!
He plays Overwatch with his 5 kids...
+aaron4820 yeah lol.. He is awesome in ways I didn't Imagine
She is really annoying, rude and unprofessional.
the conversation was wrapping up...ever heard of a segue?
She is dumber than a rock
Why the hell is she sitting like that? Its just so uncomfortable for Elon.
I know, she is circling her tow BETWEEN his legs!
Joseph Brody Gross... I didn't notice until you guys pointed it out....yikesssssss
Even though this interview was years ago, it really showcases the mindset of *the old traditional ways vs the new innovative ways.*
Kara is just determined to not be impressed by anything he says
I know she is sitting there like Larry king
WOMAN GET YOUR FOOT OUT OF THE WAY BEFORE I SNAP IT OFF AT THE KNEE!
HAHAHa drove me crazy! so much so that i had to scour the comments to find someone who talked about it lmao
I saw a woman brushing Elon's shoulder a little bit too harshly the other day in public, while passing him. I followed that person home. Want to go throw eggs at her house and then murder her family??
Me too. !!
yesssss. yesss to the hellllll
Respackt wamen
i will be downloading this and editing out most of the stupid comments made by the interviewers, but as always it's excellent listening to elon's ideas and strategies. he is almost single-handedly changing our world for the better
post a link when you do!
please do
oh , please do .
Cool!! Make sure to upload it and send the link! :D
I wonder.. if Elon is the house cat... what are they?
Anybody noticed vijay shekhar sharma from PayTM? At 1:03:00 asking a question to Elon.
He'll go down in history as the man who saved civilization by sending civilization to the stars. Elon should be decorated, he's a hero in my eyes. Go Elon Musk!!.
Even if he doesn't live to see it, his work and time will have started an entire movement and had showed people that it is possible.
😆
Much like Charles Babbage
No he won't.... Elon Musk will go down in history as one of the world's biggest frauds. He'll get exposed or sent to jail eventually
Should rename mars “planet Elon”
Watching this interview and Bezos you can really see why Musk is so special among his peers, you can tell from his answers that this is not a man just sitting at the top, but is very much hands on in the works he leads, he can be asked very detail questions and answers them effortlessly without needing to rely on cooperate speak..
Amazing range of knowledge and interests. Goes from explaining orbital mechanics, Mars colonization, battery technologies, autonomous cars, future transport, and CYBORG implants?!
So can I, and I have the same credentials in engineering and physics as Elon!
The thumbnail photo doesn't really look like Elon at all
can we just ask Elon Musk under oath if he's a time traveler?
in the future I believe people will look at oaths as something silly and unreliable, and they will wonder how society ever worked like that, so we probably could, but why would we even bother :))
Ioan-Radu Tanasescu definitely an ancient practice by today's standards from a time long lost when decency and honor were the norm
Or an Alien from a super wise civilization ; )
Well being Elons mind and Knowledge he would tell you that he couldn't be a time traveller because gravitational pull only allows time travelling into the future. Time travelling back in time is impossible
@@constantineb6433 Some hypothesis have that you can. It's far fetched theoretical way, but..
Looks like Grandma and Grandpa is really enjoying this interview ;)
They needed interviewers who follow SpaceX and Tesla's work. The questions of the lady interviewer indicate little preparation. Its not fair to fly Elon in and waste his time and that of the viewers
Wamuyu Gatheru I also thought so....the lady is completely clueless but musk did very well in answering the questions in a way his audience would expect!
23:30 “wasn’t me like shaggy” bruh 😹
lmao at 23:33 he says "it wasn't me like shaggy" !! ahahahahah
Could her leg get any closer to his groin!?
She would have to kick my head out of his lap :)
Bro right?
yes
"You're gun is sticking into my hip..."
Could you get any more immature wow
You can actually see Elon trying to translate all his crazy terms and calculations into a simple term for everyone to understand. Simply brilliant.
its crazy that they made a deep fake an hour and a half long in 2016 😱
48:00 the foot, please ... the foot. FOOT!
It drives me crazy each time i see it.
Its so disturbing to watch,,
Manspreading. Oh.. wait... She is the one spreading. Hm...
I love how he tries to explain everything as simple as he can.
Makes me curious on how he would explain the same things to people he works with
Communication is extremely important in scientific research.
There is a lot of wisdom in this comment.
Compare Elon to Bill Gates who convolutes speech to conceal his real meaning.
Its why he stammers so much
And I still don’t get it
These people take it as a joke while Elon is dead serious about everything.
1:19:29 so apparently this is a deep fake says Tesla. Now he has to come before a judge about this statement. Lol
Elon Musk warns about the danger of AI, while falsely blaming AI to for his own advantage. The court should hold him and his lawyers accountable.
They did a great job, back in 2016. Can't remember Elon complaining about it either😂
I'm not gay, but I love everything about this man !
Most important person in human history!
Glad we cleared up your sexuality
He seems like the kinda guy you could trust, have a beer with and talk about all kinds of crazy stuff. He obviously has a sense of humor as well as being very rational and brilliant.
Sounds kinda gay though
Great interview. And Elon deserved better interviewers.
