I have a 2007 V-Strom 1000. I would describe the V-Strom as the Swiss Army knife of bikes. It's not pretty, it's not great at anything, but it does a lot of things well and works. And of course, the V-twin engine, both 650 and 1000, has been around for ages, and gives you almost bulletproof reliability.
Pretty much spot on, this bike fills the space in between the Africa Twin and Versys 1000. The Africa Twin is more off-road oriented and has comparable power, but with smoother delivery, the Versys 1k is more sport touring oriented and has more power (but is so smooth that the bike is going a lot faster than you think it is).

I have two V-Strom 1000. My older was bought in 2004. This bikes were never meant to be driven 200 km/h, that's why the original DL1000 has restriction and noticeable power loss in higher revs in 2/3/5 & 6th gear. But it's a great touring bike.
The "harshness" that you felt at the beginning is not due to the weight of the bike. Btw., the 650 isn't really that much lighter.. just a tiny bit. It is because the suspension is set to be alot stiffer for better cornering on the road. But, in contrast to the 650, it is fully adjustable, so you can tune it to your liking. Aaaaand... the quality of the suspension is an a WHOLE other level than that of the 650.
Another excellent review Cager. I’ve recently bought the 650XT and probably like a lot of people are waiting for someone to make a nice good looking exhaust can to replace the hideous stock can! Love your ‘mistake’ by calling it a pannier......fabulous!
I wonder if suzuki will ever build a budget conscious sv1000x cafe racer as a big brother to the sv650? would be interesting with a big torquey v twin if priced competitively
Neil Widdison not really a cafe racer but yes I see your point, was thinking sv1000 engine in Euro 4 spec retro cafe racer, abs, traction control and a 7k price tag
I recently bought a 2019 DL1000, Nice bike. I still have my 2012 DL1000 too. The new bike is much better in every way. They now have a new generation, DL1050. I can't imagine the 1050 being much better than my 2019 DL1000. I got a screaming hot closeout deal on my bike. $8,750 brand new, out the door. I could never wear out my old bike, it would run basically forever, and it was upgraded everything, but how do you pass up a deal like that! So this is my second brand new DL1000 in a row. After near a decade of riding them, I feel secure knowing they will get me there and back.
Hi Cager, I did buy the XT 10 days ago and your review is spot on. Great bike, extremly user friendly and the bikes does everything very good. I like how light it is. I did put LED blinkers, Remus titanium exhaust and Givi Trakker case on and for now it has all the things I need to attack Italian and Austrian Passes in the Summer.
I’m rewatching reviews of ‘18 -‘19 V-Strom 1000’s now (10/27/19) because it appears Suzuki is either significantly reconfiguring, dropping or replacing the bike for 2020. We’ll see in a couple of weeks. Regardless, there are a ton of unsold ‘18 and ‘19 models being offered at either huge discounts or they’re being bundled with excellent packages. The question is: Buy a bike that’s been technologically eclipsed by other manufacturers or wait to see what’s being offered at more than twice the price? I just did a ride on an unsold demo and . . . yikes, it’s a damn decent motorcycle!
nice vid, but the bike was not going out at 180 kph... You were in 5 gear. The “funky” diving is proberbly the ABS kicking in. Keep on the good work with your Channel. Its always a plesure and I have been watching since “Tiny wings”. You do an amazing job
I've got the old 2007 v-strom 650, with the same mirrors. Maybe they're ugly but they're by far the best I ever had on any motorbikes I ride. I ride in a club which owns an old GSE500. This oldy received designed mirrors last winter and they're nice but shit, I can only see my shoulders. I wish they'd put v-strom mirrors on the GSE, at least.
Hey cager. You mentioned it was a little rough off road but you had the suspension at the 3rd setting. You think it would have been better on a softer setting?
I've owned both. 650 is cheaper, lighter, more economical, smoother, and just as capable. It lacks the heft and grunt of the 1000, so if you're an older rider who's been there, done that, you'll love the 650, and pocket the $5k difference. If you want to bring your sweetie, the 1000 is the way to go.
If the pillion pegs weren't removable you'd bend the subframe and write off the bike. Cat is there so you only need to replace the end can. Cager any chance of a KTM 1090 review?
I love this bike and not just because of the price. I’ve had 2 vstroms now and I have grown to fall in love with the iconic Vstrom look. I enjoy the way they manage to build a bike that is nothing less or more than you need at a respectable price. Reliability and comfort is the stand out for me.
Hi, do you spend your own money in that bike?? I make that question because I want to buy one of that but I have in mind KTM 1090 R, and I don't know which onw
Good review, though you ride it like a sportsbike 😀. These are great all rounders, i have an 04 650. Enough power ,great economy and cheap to run. Fun in the twisties too if you ride smooth. Keep the vids coming.
Hi ...first thing I did when I got my new versys 650 was to take those hideous orange reflectors OFF..😝.brilliant channel... 😊👍👍👍👍👍from dave in england
I own one. Great bike.
A perfect allrounder for an fair price.
The Suzuki customer service is actually also great.

I am really interested in this bike but I'm also considering Africa Twin or Versys. How do you think maintenance cost is compared to them?
This was the vstrom review I was looking for. I love this bike. I’ll be looking to buy one
Did you buy it? Happy with it? :)
You forgot to mention, it has also corner ABS.
I've got the black version of this '18 DL1000XT, looks even better in my opinion. Waiting for the Arrow exhaust silencer coming.... :)

Circles are LCD brightness level. The rear wobble when braking may be the IMU at work with the ABS. Your review is spot on (I have that exact model).

What year did the 1000 first get adjustable suspension?

Im alslo ooking the 650xt, how are you satisfied? any regrets/pluses/minuses?
I wonder if suzuki will ever build a budget conscious sv1000x cafe racer as a big brother to the sv650? would be interesting with a big torquey v twin if priced competitively
Graham Stewart they did the sv 1000
Neil Widdison not really a cafe racer but yes I see your point, was thinking sv1000 engine in Euro 4 spec retro cafe racer, abs, traction control and a 7k price tag
Graham Stewart sounds good graham
Now that is a great idea.
They did do an sv1000, back in 2001-2005 dident sell very well
I recently bought a 2019 DL1000,

Another great review that is informative and interesting to watch. Keep up these great unbiased tests Cager.
Be safe.
Suzuki should add a third size: 1300 cc Adv bike. Keep the 650 and 1000 as is, but give the 1300 big HP numbers and keep the torque high.

Muito obrigado pela análise. Gostei muito. Achas que dá uma boa commuter?
A shooting range at the top of a mountain,? what could go wrong..
I think it's an excellent bike for people who want to do lots of miles at a normal pace.
Just bought one, arrives Sunday.
How do you like it? Happy with your chouce?
:)
happiest reviewer on youtube... :)
Hey cager. You mentioned it was a little rough off road but you had the suspension at the 3rd setting. You think it would have been better on a softer setting?
Great review, you're making me want to buy this bike.
Great review as usual. Now I'm thinking of turning in my 650 to get this one. Will be a difficult decision.
Funny review Cager !!!! I love it !!!!
Sexy bike. Considering this or the 650.

Smiths fan?
Very good review. I liked the video very much.

I now have a 2018 v strom thou, same colours... great review , great bike.
you know, they always say motorcycles make panties drop... never knew it could be the rider's :P
Touché! Maybe a coating of Vasoline on the seat would fix the problem. But whoever heard of friction being a problem?
I am from panama central america what is better mt03 vs v strom 250?
good review, but you leave no room for error! There are old riders and bold riders, but OLD, BOLD... not so much!
Hi ...first thing I did when I got my new versys 650 was to take those hideous orange reflectors OFF..😝.brilliant channel... 😊👍👍👍👍👍from dave in england
This is very very good review .....
This is very very good review .....
Thank you
Nice job on the review.

Good review.
My Triumph 1050 average is 5l/100.
mt 09 SP review ?
Ktm 1050 o this v strom?
Great review as always buddy!
Well built bike with some details that could be a bit better, but overall I think is a good bike!
\m/ Abraço companheiro
Tubless spoke wheels i see
Excited about the V-Twin but the thing is god-awful homely.
That beak makes it look like a canary
E pt?
Same remark as for 650. For 2018 model they could have changed at least the dashboard as on 250 and not this "mid 2005" design.
The brake dive was horrendous.
Nice bike!!! Just the guy riding it has a deathwish!
What does he care? It's not his bike!
Fair these prosecutor drxsav bag funding craft junior longtime direct sum institutional
I've always owned Suzuki motorcycles, but I really don't like the V strom. It's ugly.
It's not all about looks. Just ask my wife!
