- Although it isn’t the most glamorous liter-sized adventure-touring motorcycle, it’s clear Suzuki drives a hard bargain with its V-Strom 1000. For 2019, it offers an up-spec XT 1000 Adventure model outfitted with hard luggage, engine protection, a centerstand, and heated grips for an asking price of $14,600-a relative steal in the ADV segment.

The V-Strom 1000 is powered by Suzuki’s decommissioned V-twin superbike engine that was engineered for competition during the late ’90s. Despite being more than 20 years old, this classic engine configuration lends itself well to ADV life, with its slim packaging and copious levels of bottom-end torque. Plus it has a smooth power delivery while maintaining pleasing sporting character.
In this installment of MC Commute we put Suzuki’s top-of-the-line ADV rig through its paces on our way to the Motorcyclist magazine office in Southern California. Sound off in the comments below and let us know what you think of Suzuki’s old, but certainly not forgotten, V-Strom 1000.

I bought a 2018 VStromXT. I read a tonne of reviews, and watched a tonne of videos. The term used consistently throughout my research was value. Everyone was surprised by the amount of bike they got for the price. One of the reviewers said, "It's not the best at any one thing but it is right there with everything." It is a simple and practical machine, with proven reliability, capable of taking on almost anything you can throw at it. Hands down the best purchase of my life.

I heard same words from the reviewers, and after having mine for 4 months, I ride alone and offten quick I love the bike, the only thing I miss for the highway is cruise control.
@@jblue1299 Yes, the stock windshield is shit(I am 6'2), and as Sky Works said above, the lack of cruise control could be a pain in the ass for some people. I didn't really mind not having it but it would have been nice. Overall the bike handled the trip just fine. My only real discomforts besides the windshield were gear related and had nothing to do with the bike itself.

My bike, my is just in yellow and also 2019. I did put Led blinkers and Remus exhaust on and it sounds great. Yesterday I went on my usuall quick ride like 100 kilometres of curvy mountain road and long high speed turns and the bike performs great. You made my day with words that the GS 1250 aint much quicker. Most underated great sporty bike.

I have a 2018. Right after changing the oil the first time I started getting idle hammer. Quite a bit posted online about it. Have you noticed that on your bike?

Me too! Put 3800 miles on it so far. Very happy except for the clutch basket noise at idle, but apparently thats just a VStrom thing.
@@clintterrill6886 My clutch does not make any sound, bring it to the dealer, it is in warranty. Enjoy
sky works yeah, I can try that. But from what I gather they will just put the same basket in and it will make the same sound after awhile. Its hard to tell but its either the idle hammer or the clutch basket. I guessed its the basket since it gets quieter when I pull in the clutch. It started at 550 miles and I now I have 3825 the bike still functions flawlessly. Just has that knocking sound at idle but still appears to function just fine. Smooth and powerful. 🤷🏼♂️
@@clintterrill6886 my bought-new 2002 V-Strom 1000 with 58k has the same quirk. It's definitely a VStrom thing. I STILL wouldn't part with it.
Riding 80MPH in a 55MPH speed zone in California without getting caught over 10 minutes of riding is a miracle!

I traded my 2014 V-Strom 1000 in on a new R1250GS... I totally enjoyed the V-Strom, the BMW was a life long dream I could make happen. If circumstances didn’t allow for the R1250GS... I would still be happy with the Suzuki.
B Shortt, hope you can respond to this. I'm looking for either a 2018/2019 V-strom 1000 or a 2014 1200GSA, I was wondering the difference in air / wind protection for your legs on both bikes, any differences in that department?
B Shortt... how is the bmw working for you? Would you go back to a Vstrom? I have owned bmw's for many years. Part of owner ship is the need some time to have dealer work on bike... specially while under warrantee. How close is your dealer. Mine is a days drive there and back. Not worried about simple service's... but more than that, I do not think I would sleep well worried about the day, that will come, when you have to drop it off.

The GSA windscreen is a little different in size than the GS that I have, but as far as wind protection. I had a Givi screen on my V-Strom and that made it just as good as the GS, Now I'm 5'10 so that gives you some reference. The GS/GSA will give better wind protection from the cylinders, but I never found the V-Strom bad for that, just the GS is better. So for the V-Strom, go for a Givi screen or similar and you'll be happy. The stock screen on the V-Strom is not horrible , about middle of the road.
I love my R1250GS, but I have zero regrets over the Suzuki.
@@davidfalgout7304 The BMW is GREAT.... not that the V-Strom was bad. Would I got back to the V-Strom, I would.... I live in Nova Scotia, and the nearest BMW dealer is in New Brunswick, 250km away. Now that being said, I have no complaints about the dealer at all, aside from geography. In fact even though there is a Suzuki dealer in Halifax, I purchased the V-Strom from the same dealer as the BMW. They have a drop off and pick up service on a regular basis to the Halifax area, so they are making it as easy an ownership experience as possible. The servicing for the warranty period is not too bad. I have a lot of friends in the Moncton area I can visit. And they are also a Triumph dealer, and I'm itching for a Speed Twin. Once this Covid stuff settles.
So would I buy the BMW all over again, yes I would, because I was able to afford it. If the money part didn't work out for me, I'd still have the V-Strom, and still be completely happy with it.

Great review, just bought exactly same bike and colour. So far so good, paid £9000 in UK and came with hard panniers etc, got a great deal. Bike now advertised for £10,000 plus
Did the BMW test ride then rode a 2018 V-Strom 1000XT same day.
BMW was good and looks better but honestly the Strom handled better and I loved the Vtwin.
I bought the VStrom the following day. I've only had it a few months, just cleared 1700 miles.
Could not be happier with the decision.
I have 2 regrets in life, not meeting my wonderful wife years earlier and selling my Vstrom 650, bike was the perfect allrounder. And the way you filter traffic with the bags on is commendable Sir.

The comment was to indicate that the 650 V-Strom or any V-Strom is a great bike, and I regret selling it for a cruiser that left the garage in 6 months.....

You're averaging 32 mpg because you're wringing the hell out of it...40+ in 1st will do that. I have 5500 miles on my 2018 yellow/black XT and have averaged 50 mpg. I don't ride aggressively, just enjoy the 65 mile daily commute...going 70-72 on the highway with moderate city riding. I bought it new last November for $9000 and prefer it over my previous GS1200 and Concours 14. It's been a blast to ride and nothing on it feels cheap. The engine and transmission is one of the smoothest I've owned. Yes, the gauge cluster is dated and doesn't have ride by wire tech, but I'd buy it again if I had to do it all over. All this from a guy that despised Suzuki and really wanted to buy a Honda Africa Twin or Yamaha Super Tenere.
Brett, I have all the mod cons on my Triumph and I use none of them period. I stream my music from my phone to my Helmet, oh but once in a while i use cruise control. Suzuki makes a great bike always has always will. Safe travels!!!
Total reliability, bullet proof motor, tough as nails and last but not least, best bloody value for money bike on the market. I have a 2014 1000, fully kitted out and the only item required is a factory cruise control. I will do a heap of km's on tour, and the cruise would be beneficial. Cannot wait to see what the new 2020 redesigned DR Big/vstrom will come out with. Good review Adam.
I think what happened on the backin test is that when you wheelied the bike disabled the abs.

Suzuki V-Strom 1000XT (2018) purchased mine a couple months ago.. after a couple thousand miles. I feel like I can comment on it..low end grunt..ohhh yes..3k to 5k rpm
is the sweet spot..effortless power..It just wants to go.. suspension is good..adjustable..it works.. fuel injection mapping is spot on, no lag no hesitation..very nice..I do like the guage package..lots of info..air temp ..mpg..range..clock..and yes a gear indicator..I ride mostly the back roads here in southern Oregon ..canyons ..mountains.. on the freeway at 65 to 80mph rock solid..this bike corners well..stock tires..I get 50mpg average..range 250-275 miles..
I do have a 2015 V-strom 650..how do they compare..? the 650 is a nice ride as well..feels a bit lighter..great handling ect BUT.. that 1037 cc motor in the 1000 is the cats meow..tellin ya
given a choice..1000 all the way :0)..I paid $11,700 out the door for mine..NO REGRETS..IN FACT..I CANT GET OFF IT..ahh yes grasshopper..life is good on a Suzuki V-Strom 1000XT
I had the old 1000, it was a good bike. When the new one came out I looked at the specs and went Meh it won't be much better. I was way way way wrong. The 1037 is killer. It has awesome performance where a rider can actually use it in the real world.

@@4fifty8 ..I did listen to your vid of the engine noise..my bike does not make that noise (idle hammer)..humm..I did some research on this.. most say its not a reliability issue..granted it does not sound great at idle..I notice it stops at just a little higher idle.... mmmm ..try easing up your idle just a bit..run non alcohol gas if possible..min 90 octane..I did my first oil/filter change at 577 miles..break in rpm never above 4k..my guess..its the crap gasoline we get today..my 2 cents :0)
spoiley62 2018 1000XT in Champion Yellow here. Also did my first oil change at around 550 miles. I always, ALWAYS run non-ethanol 100% gasoline, at least 90 octane minimum. I’m at 2800 miles and haven’t heard the idle hammer yet. Also getting consistent 50-52 mpg’s. It’s a relatively high compression engine so I think this engine needs good gas to get the best mileage and performance. Getting ready to have the seat modded at a local shop, then some crash bars and heated grips. So far my Suzi has been a great bike.
@@Mainrollman thanks for the response. I've been getting good gas mileage too. I always use 91 octane minimum. It's very frustrating since I never heard it on a used demo bike I rode and seems most people don't experience it. I might put some pressure on the dealer to fix it or start talking to Suzuki Canada.
I have ridden test rides on Gs many times no question it is great but in my country the price is around 30k eur and equally equipped version of vstrom is around 18/19k euros. You can tour all around Europe for several years with this money difference. In my opinion both bikes are great and Suzuki is superb in value for money category! Great review man!👍

Me too. Keep looking at other bikes, including the 2023 Vstrom 1050 DE and I cannot justify the costs of switching. It was already near perfect in 2014.
I bought a new 2014 last year. It is very dependable and forgiving. Yes not the cutting edge best but it is like a labrador it will do everything you ask within reason, I love mine!
It's also a big pig......like a Labrador retriever.....lol
I wanted a BMW GS1200A then I rode a 2014 Vstrom 1000 adventure, I was sold. I also got mine used with 3900 miles for 7200 out the door, so that didn’t hurt. It’s an awesome bike I’ve owned it almost a year.
If you didn’t need the status of opposed cylinders and a shiny exoskeleton, this bike is just amazing. Consider if any is us would have considered needing electronic driver aids 10 years ago - when we were younger, you know, pre-Viagra. Half the price of an Austrian or German bike pays for a lot of riding trips. That’s me, laughing all the way to the bank on an amazing v-twin engine.
I just picked up this same bike in February. $12,500 including plates and registration. While it's not a R1250GS, it was half the cost. 👍

I put 110k miles over 8 years on a 2008 DL1000, mostly commute miles in the LA area. Wonderful bike and was handed down to my son for college commutes. It still lives today. A JC Whitney top box and generic tank bag was all it needed to be a commuter's mule.

I thought that this bike put out 100 HP. Just got done with a 2-day on my 2014 Strom Adventure. Riding was split between gravel and asphalt roads with Pirelli Scorpion Trail II’s. Roads were very curvy. It’s an awesome bike. I was hooked up on all surfaces and very stable.
I've done just under 30,000 miles in the last 12 months on a 2018 650xt. Zero problems. Great bike and no doubt the 1000 is the same. I'm not personally bought into the 1000 though over the 650. For a workhorse the 650 works fine.
TommyBarnezTV definitely can’t go wrong with either. I’ve owned both, currently have the 1000. I like both equally but for different reasons.

Chris Kneifl with that brief I would go for the 1000. The 650 to me is more of a commuter bike that gets great gas mileage and obviously initially costs less to purchase. There’s is nothing wrong with the 650 but if I was after one purely for the weekends that needed to be touring with 2 people, making it more of a toy than a work horse, then it’s the 1000. 650 to me is purchased with the brain and the 1000 with the heart, if that makes sense. If you ride them both you will know what I mean... needs and wants...

I've got the 650XT if i was riding alone with some cargo it's fine but then i have a back ride you'll definitely feel the need for some more power, if you'll ride with a backride a lot definitely would prefer the 1000 than 650.

As a '97 TL1000S owner/rider I agree fully with your feelings about the engine. It is just a blast, such a willing engine. I'd love a 2014+ DL1000 for a new daily commuter but the Mrs isn't comfortable on the back of an adv bike.
I confirm that the motor is a real Diamond. Owner of a 2002 dl 1000. Even know my engine on a dyno jet says 93 hp.

Bought this exact bike, same color and all a month ago. It's perfect for me. It will never be used for hardcore off road as i have a dirtbike for that. Might see an occasional fire road or a gravel road here and there. I'm short so i had to lower mine to feel comfortable but otherwise its great

I really like the newest generation of the DL1000. I've ridden a couple and they're sweet bikes! Quite sporty ADV bikes in my opinion. I'd buy one.
I kind of like the idea of saving thousands of dollars on a quality motorcycle, And I bet if something does break it doesn't cost $10 per bolt...
The V-Strom, Super Tenere and Versys 1000 are very under-rated.
Sure the marketing department of BMW, Ktm and Ducati are just way better. But look if you buy a GS 850 it is build in China. For me Japan bikes are great value for money, look good and have all the joy that you get from Europian bikes.
The V-Strom is awesome, but the tenere is really not very good. The Versys has no offroad pretension, so it’s not quite the same.
noobasdfjkl Tbh neither of those bikes are meant for serious off-road duty. Too heavy! As far as Super Tenere is concerned check out the 300,000 miles review by Longhaulpaul on RUclips.
They are all also ugly and don't really stir any passion. Great tools, but they don't excite like the competition does

Great review thank you. When I test ride the vstrom I found the gearbox and engine a bit too much agricultural. Was my assessment wrong or did you also. Secondly, I found the engine sound could be better for a v motor compared to other manufacturers. What's your take.
Nice review, but can I suggest next time please give more bike specs. I would like to have heard about gas tank capacity, does it have cruise control (yet), maybe what changed from last year. .

V-Strom is a great bike and had been very competitive with its very reasonable pricing up until 2019. When I checked the price of the full loaded V-Strom, there was no price difference with the competition which made it a less of a "bargain". Imho, the price tag should have been under $15K.
Great review. One minor correction you can grab the windshield and adjust it with your hand anytime.
Your both correct. Height is 3 position adjustable with allen wrench, (not tool-less) angle is also 3 position adjustable with your hand (that is tool-less). Bike is shipped on middle height. I raised mine up a hole up to be at the highest level, then use my hand to adjust the angle per conditions.

What other ADV bikes would you say best the vstrom?
I have one like this and love it. I've test ridden a bunch of prestige bikes but this beat them all for me. Only problem is the feeling like it wants to drop when stopping.
Benjamin Smith you definitely get use to that, just always try and keep it as upright as possible when stopping. Soon it will become a routine and you won’t notice it. I agree fantastic bike!
Like that suzuki has put the exhaust low enough to not bother the side bags. Why is it that nearly every bike in the adventure touring segment has an exhaust so high that cuts right through the side bags? If someone could explain the reasoning for a high exhaust that would be great 😀
Er... The japanese twins didn't fail to make the power of the Ducatis at all, the Honda vtr was a bit weak sure, but the Suzuki TL make MORE power than the Ducati engines of the time.
The VFR 1200 made 170 hp also.
Yep, Ducati had more experience and unbeatable riders in Sbk, but suzuki engine made the same power in the street version as the Ducati, Italians are well known for claiming more hp than reality, the new panigale v4 with full exhaust system by akrapovic claims 226hp yet it cannot beat the R1M, the new BMW 2020 is way faster claiming way less hp.

sold my 2016 ZX14R for a 2018 strom 1000 last year. Believe it or not, but im having more fun now. No bags on mine, I ride it as if it was a big supermoto. dealers give huge discounts so the bike is even more a value. I just wish some tuner would do a ECU reprogram that takes a few of the restrictions away. Hey Adam, can you do a quarter mile run with it sometime and let us know how you do??

Owned a DL650 8 years ago and did long distance driving, north of polarcircle, was thinking about buying this bike for a long time, the price is great but the bike is to basic for 2019. Can forgive most but really want cruise control as an option.
How about the vibration it is not bad in low and high rpm?

Today I was in Dainese store to buy new summer shoes and they also sell Ducati. I did sit on the Multistrada 950 and I can confirm that sitting position and comfort in much more pleasant on the Vstrom 1000 and dont take me wrong I like the design of the Ducati.
hello , has this bike autoshift? I saw you dont use the clutch to some upshifts...
you do not have to use clutch to upshifts. just put a little presaur to the gearbox and rev up the engine than release the gas for a sec or less and push up the gear. simple. sry for my bad english. hope u understnad otherwise check out on youtube. there is tons of videos how to do this

I bought a 2014 new in 2016 for $9400 out the door with 0% financing. I have about 26,000 miles on it now, and I have gone places and done things with it that it was never meant to do. I don't air down my tires, and have never bent a run even doing mild trails in Moab. I wanted a rock solid reliable ADV bike and was willing to take a little more weight than the Honda, and get more reliability and simplicity than the KTM. They only issue I ever had is the inability to disable the ABS for offroad, it will get you killed in gravel or loose downhills. Other than that it is about perfect if you don't need dirtbike offroad ability.

Just do a wheelie and the ABS will be disabled. Easy! Just like in this video haha
Heated grip cable routing looks clean to me... zip tie it to the throttle cable bracket as you suggested and see how far you can open throttle. It's not easy to make the cabling vanish when you've got to have the slack for left/right lock to lock + the full movement of the throttle grip. I wish mine looked this clean, I cant even see the left grip cable from your POV at all.
2:13 - 2:18 can someone explain to me that whiny engine sound every time it decelerates? What's causing it? I am starting to hear it on my bike. Previously wasn't there.
That's intake sound I believe.....

I agree. I have a 2012 650 and I don't like the headlight configuration. It either looks like a cartoon character or a bit on the feminine side. I love the vstrom so much that if I ever got rid of it, it would be to buy a newer one. Especially one with the cyclops look, but I think I'd stick with the 650.

Like most modern Suzuki bikes, the current Vstrom 1000 is under appreciated. The engine is smooth and has strong midrange grunt. The ergonomics are comfortable, the bike is pretty light and narrow for a 1000. It has very competent high-end suspension with great brakes that have lean-angle ABS. I believe the IMU is also tied to the TC. Considering the discounts offered by dealers it’s a hell of a bike for the price. The one thing it’s missing is cruise control. If I hadn’t just bought a Triumph Tiger I would own one of these.

Does the engine deivery power like the original TL1000s yet? If not... why not.
Wrong power delivery for this application, (according to the experts). However, I would love a TL-R engine on my old SV1000N.
As is with a few different bits and bobs this engine could make 140hp ALL DAY easily and reliably...150hp if you wanted to slap it on a sport bike.
