  • I was a little delirious at the end of this one - but this is in fact 2024 - Not 2022 as I say in my opening bit. I'll let you know up front that a lot of this video is me struggling to actually get back in the race. I was really looking forward to this technical race - and in that respect it did not disappoint.
The first time I did this race was 2023. It was super wet, muddy, and a completely different struggle of a race. This year it was dry enough that they sent us through several miles of new rock gardens which I liked a lot. And added some all new sections that were slow-going because of the soft soil and big loose rocks and roots. That had to wait though because this race quickly went South, literally, only about 3-4 minutes in, when I ended up off-track and down over the side of the mountain ! The actual racing parts of the video and all the rock garden sections are worth watching after my trip through the forest. If you can't stand the hillside struggle skip to 32:10 or so. That's where I rejoin the race in the middle of everyone else's 2nd lap. Still winded from getting unstuck and struggling a bit the first lap, I didn't really get my heart rate down until the end of that lap. I then made two solid laps without any major bobbles at all. Howard's Hole went smooth every lap as well.
I was dead last in 10th place the first lap and made my way up to 6th by the end - one lap down on the leaders.
I Love the Snowshoe race. It's rare that you combine super slow, technical sections with super fast, wide-open sections like you do here. My top speed was 69 mph ! And the party atmosphere before and after the race is like no other. I can't wait to go back next year for some redemption.
See you at the next one.

What a trooper. Enjoy your videos. Personally I think that snowshoe track was the roughest one so far this year. I felt your pain

Thanks. I agree - it was very technical. I like that part though. haha

As exhausted as you were following your excursion off the bank, you made a ton of good line choices and gutted it out! Real good on ya! That was a great ride!

Thanks a lot. That's a big part of the battle - to stay in and charge on.

Oh man, I did something similar in a local hare scramble last month. First lap. Got a great start. We all hit the first steep hill and I charge up the first line to make some passes. Halfway up I hit a branch and went sideways. Had to turn quick and run back to the bottom to make another run. Collided with another rider at the base and went off into a deep ditch. It took everything I had to get the bike out and I realized my race was done. At 65 and just getting over some injuries it just made me feel old.

Yeah- good on you for still getting out there. I really hope I'm able to ride and do some races for another 10 years !

Hard enduro GNCC edition! Sometimes it's easier to go all the way down the hill once you fall, but that can be scary at a place like Snowshoe!
In addition to the suspension thing below you might check out some of Moto Academy's body position videos. Chest mounts can be deceiving but it seems like you're kind of riding behind the bars with your hands rather than diamond grip / head over number plate. When you ride that extra few inches ahead, when the bike goes sideways like this, you have the positioning to wrangle it back instead of going along for the ride. Plus have more angular momentum in the first place so less likely to get kicked sideways.

Thanks. I appreciate the feedback. I have been doing better getting forward when braking and turning in, but will also think about that while standing and hitting whoops.

looks like your rebound was too soft and kicked you up and sideways. trying going in your rebound a few clicks to settle it down in high speed sections

Thank you. I appreciate any guidance or suggestions. Setting up the suspension to work good as fast as my right hand wants to go is one of my struggles.

@@philipcaudill626 This is one of my strengths. While I don't run, GNCC, I run same class as you, have multiple championships. You can clearly tell your suspension threw you sideways 100%. It was not you! To combat this I suggest 2 things. 1) Go in a 3 clicks on front and rear rebound. Keep in mind that any time you stiffen rebound, it effects compression, so when going in a few rebound clicks you may have to go out 1-2 compression clicks to regain compliance. Also, on the rear, don't worry about low speed compression as much, it only effects compression on BIG hard landings like jumps. The high speed adjuster is where its at for offroad. To calm down high speed rear end kick back, go OUT 2 clicks on your high speed. Without knowing your weight, bike and springs, this is a good place to start. Try it this weekend and let me know how you make out. Also, I see you run a late model KTM 2 stroke, you want that rear sag around 108 (yes 108). Get some of the weight off the forks and onto the rear shock and let the shock start doing most of the work (as it should).

@@95jersey Wow. Thanks for the suggestions. I have nothing to lose by giving some things a try. I actually softened it a little for my last race and left it soft for this one because of the rocks and sharp edges I'd be seeing. My biggest problem is that I'm racing on weekends and don't have a good place, or time otherwise, to do some serious testing. Thanks again.
