And one more thing - you can play E chord also as [0x645x] with exactly the same right hand pattern and incorporate melody notes on 4th fret of the 1st string and 7th fret of the 2nd string. Both versions was used in the song and are perfectly legitimate.
Thank you thank you thank you for this tutorial! I played it with a capo on the second fret but played it in a way to make it sound like the way you played it without the capo.
Thank you, this is a wonderful lesson! I'm not so familiar with finger picking styles and using my left thumb for the bass notes was a struggle at first as well, but thanks to this tutorial (as I really want to learn this song) it's starting to come more naturally. I've checked some other videos of yours and it seems I'll have you to thank for a lot of progress in my guitar playing, so thank you!
Beautiful lesson on a great composition from a master storyteller. Just imagine if we could learn all of history via storytelling with music.. I’ll look for more of your tutorials. Beautiful guitar playing and right hand descriptions. Oh, and the guitar sounds like a sweet companion
Glad i found your channel, subscribed. Always loved how mark can come up with these pieces that flow so nicely you don't even notice the complexity at first. I know your list of requests is long but i'd love to see Baloney Again :)
Thank you very much! I thought about what song to pick after my next lesson (also a great song of Mark's), and I'll do Baloney Again after that one! The list is huge, but I always try to pick a tune somebody would be personally interested in, so thanks for a request. I think I'm ready to analyse another three songs.
Thank you! I love both songs, would love to do it. List of his great songs is huge! That's why I decided to concentrate on MK's music only. It will give me work literally for years.
Forgot to mention - of course, you can just strum the Capo II version and it would sound amazing. Strumming pattern is very similar to "Why Aye Man" strumming pattern, which I discussed in previous Lesson 1.
Amazing lessons mate!! I'm also one of Mark Knopflers biggest fans!! What guitar & recording equipment are you using? The sound is also amazing!! Good job!!
Again a great lesson by another master of guitar. Well done. I am now looking forward to each new installment of the Songbook. Any chance that you would take a crack at Speedway at Nazareth in your expert way?
Thank you! Of course, I love this song. A lot of stuff going on there, maybe I even would talk about voice a little. Anyway, this song is in a long list of lessons indeed.
Hi Pavel, first I will congratulate for your good tutorial. Can I make some suggestions? 1.) It would be easyer to learn, if some passages would be played a little bit SLOWER. 2.) why don't you accompany certain passages singing for a longer time? If you prefer not to sing, you can sing talking, but it helps. Thank you.
You must have large hands as I can’t quite wrap my thumb around the 2nd fret (E string) to play the F# root. I have an Epiphone EJ-160E but thinking of buying an acoustic with a smaller nut width instead.
Hi Pavel, I've been a Mark Knopfler fan since 1978, when Sultans of Swing came out. Obviously, I've not followed him as closely as you have!! QUESTION: on your MK_SONGBOOK page, is there any TABS written? Also, you must have heard NECK & NECK with Chet Atkins...? I have a friend who has met Chet several times in the 90's before his untimely death. A real LEGEND...! Best regards, Dennis Wilson
I know you’re explaining what figures are used but can you also explain what strains you are picking with those fingers like the first second third fourth fifth sixth
If he says index that is the always the third string, middle is the second and ring is always the first, hope that helps. ps I've just seen your post is one year old, so you are probably playing it now.
....AWESOME....I'm learning so much....I want a lesson, where are you from??

That's only possible with the thumb hitting the bass note. So the chord is [2x442x]. Bass is with the thumb, then ring finger, little finger, and index. The 5th string is muted. If you can't play bass note with the thumb, this chord is ridiculously hard to play.
@@PavelFomenkov really appreciate the response. Getting back into guitar at 40, always hate when I fall in love with a song I think I can play, and then can’t physically play the chord. But I am going to try with the capo. Starting to come together. Grateful for the time you spent making this video and others.
David, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised that all Mark's rhythm guitar players always played this song with a capo on the 2nd fret! No capo version is some mighty fingerpicking right there. So nothing wrong with this version, I just figured since on the record Mark played it with no capo, I should teach it that way. But every method is legit and sounds great. Feel free to ask further questions, I'll be glad to answer them.
I use Audio-Technica PRO37, AT2035 & AT2050. As you can see, I'm a big fan of Audio-Technica, I use 3 microphones and 2 headphones and they all works great.
I’m very sorry. The sequence of chords in the chorus is a bit wrong. The first and final chords aren’t intro chord, but the second chord, which is G if played with capo on the 2nd fret
There is certainly a special case for this YT user: the _REAL_ views count, in fact, has to be interpreted as "count.10e3". I don't see any other logical explanation to its currently so low value... Keep the great work, Pavel, and thank you so much!
Thank you so much Mike! You're right, I work for real views only, I think if I deserve better it's just a matter of time, and the most important thing is that I work for genuine people like you.

This guy, he knows all the chords.🎸

“Let’s sail to Philadelphia for a moment” You’re a legend. Love these videos and many thanks, great tutorials
This video is the definitive guide on all of RUclips for playing Sailing to Philadelphia.
Such a beautiful song. No other musician touches my soul like Mark.
Thank you thank you thank you for this tutorial! I played it with a capo on the second fret but played it in a way to make it sound like the way you played it without the capo.
This tutorial is captivating. Hate to admit it, but I had other plans tonight and cannot tear my eyes and ears away from the post.

Finally a version without capo I fell the same that it sounds better!
With the free tabs linked make me even more grateful!

Wow... That's exactly what I was looking for! And a great tutorial too!
This is fantastic!!! Thank you so much, you're a great teacher....I always had a hard time picking, you make it so much easier to learn!
My goal is complete then, thank you and have a great time playing great music. It deserves hours of practicing.

Fantastic Pavel. Thanks.
Thank you for this wonderful lesson and the tabs!!! :)
A great lesson. I've always wanted to learn this song and I'll now give it a try.
Very good explanation thank you
Great tutorial!! you do it very easy!! thanks a lot!
Love how you mute the strings for the close-up of the fingerpicking pattern. That makes things so much clearer.
This is fantastic. Thank you very much for your effort.

Two approaches on the same song, I like it.

So in the A9, you actually play the C# as well as the B. Cool dissonance. I've never previously thought of that combo.
The key to your playing is the thumb being like a metronome, never ceasing. It's the Travis picking issue again, you can either do it or you can't.
Muscle memory that is all. It helps to muffle the strings like Pavel was doing and just listen to the rhythm
thank you. ❤️ prefer capo version..easier for my small hands 😄
Hi Pavel, first I will congratulate for your good tutorial. Can I make some suggestions?

Same here - I have to barre the chord at the second fret, momentarily lifting it off to play the 'variation' open top E note.

Great
You my friend are quite good, my youtube, mentor
Panel, my name is Gord from Canada, love the sound of your guitar, if you don’t mind what strings do you use please? Thanks
That was Martin Retro .012 light strings.
Please explain the strength you are plucking by naming them 1 2. 3. Or pluck six and four together.
I know you’re explaining what figures are used but can you also explain what strains you are picking with those fingers like the first second third fourth fifth sixth

На самом деле мы уже как-то общались в прошлом в группах по Марку и Dire Straits ;)
Я тебе сейчас позвоню, если ты не против и не слишком поздно.
Which guitar is it? it sounds amazing
hi - can you let me know the make of your acoustic guitar please?
It's Gibson Advanced Jumbo - one of the best acoustics out there.
How are you playing that f-sharp minor with 7th on top and added 11th?!?!? I cant even get my hand to hold all those strings down

I play it with capo on 2nd fret, but using slighty different chord shapes, sounding exactly as your "without capo" (and most accurate) version

I just put two large diaphragm condenser Audio-Technica mics in front of the guitar and record my voice on an instrumental mic at the same time.

Yes
