    Pavel Fomenkov is doing more to make Mark Knopfler songs accessible to the world than everybody else put together!

  • @PavelFomenkov
    @PavelFomenkov  4 года назад +141

    Romeo And Juliet is the ultimate Mark Knopfler Song. It has… Signature acoustic guitar playing, signature guitar itself, signature electric guitar soloing, signature lyrics, the song is about love, it has obvious literary influence, musical influence, movie influence, it was written while “playing around shapes”, it has signature AABAAB structure, beautiful arrangement, one-of-a kind ending with rare modulation (to E Major), it has odd tuning, and the list goes on… No video can cover everything in this song, because it would take hours to cover every little detail, but of course the main source for inspiration is the famous and beloved National guitar part, and so I discuss it with all my passion, I hope you’ll find it interesting. Thanks for watching! Pavel.

      Thanx for the wonderful video. I just love Knopflers music. It is so intense. Love his style of playing. His solos are out of this world. Romeo and Juliet is one of my favourites. Others are Sultans of Swing, Brothers in arms and Sailing to Philadelphia. Keep up the great work. Daniel.

    Pavel,
    I'm so glad you've done this song. I've been working on it for a while--like so many other things--but I love it so much, so I will persist until I get it. It has so many challenges, just getting that first bar down is hard enough to get really clean sound on all the individual notes. Thank you again. sorry I haven't had an email from you lately. Interested in what's happening in your life. great work, as always. you are a legend! I love that you are so down the earth in your explanations, and , particularly, that your love of Mark's music comes through loud and clear in every lesson.

    Mark's classical origins show here and it's more simplistic than people think (like you said). The E minor being a good example.. he could have played a full chord with the base note but he knows the simpler, lighter way is enough and suits the delicacy of the song. A really sophisticated yet simple song.. my favorite type. Can't believe I only just discovered this channel.. great video.. really intelligent approach.. thanks for saving me so much time.
    PS Seeing as you asked.. 'too busy' is fine to use for your description.. 'too full' would be another way of putting it. Too full, less full, fuller, not full enough etc..depending on your needs. It's used as a descriptive term in classical music generally when talking about orchestration and it's application. Strangely the opposite in this case would be 'thin' not 'empty' but that's English for you.

    Hello Pavel, congratulations for all your work on Mark Knopfler, you are very strong !! I know you have a national style O14, I have one too and I really like playing Mark's different finger picking in open G titles like: “portobello belle”, “wild west end”, “telegraph road”, and this wonderful "Romeo and Juliet ", I don't play them as well as you do, but I work and hope over the years to improve myself thanks to your videos. Mark does not play bottleneck on his 1937 O14 a lot, I think there are some songs like "water of love" with a bit of bottleneck. Do you know which brands of strings he uses on his O14, and especially which gauge ? Personally on my National O14 I started by installing michael messer 013-056, they sound great but it's hard to keep up with "romeo and juliet" and as I don't play bottleneck I told myself “why not try a less strong gauge ?”so I just fitted “ d’addario phosphor bronze in 011-052” on my O14, of course they press less on the cone, and the sound is less dry but less beautiful than the michael messer 013-056 , but the game is easier ... can you tell me if you have tried several strings and gauge yourself and which strings do you use finally ? thank you so much !! Xavier

    • @PavelFomenkov
      @PavelFomenkov  3 года назад +1

      Hi Xavier! First of all, I don't own a National style O, that's just too expensive. Mark uses extremely heavy strings for his National, namely a mixture between 14-59 and 13-56 gauges.

      Interesting, because before you asked I never thought about it haha. On A chord there it's what I call "thumb downstroke". It's when you don't pick a single string with the thumb, but rather brush it across 2 or 3 strings, hence "downstroke", but frankly playing just one note bass would work nice, too.

      Last time was in... Done with Bonaparte ? :P but I like your videos. In this video I can hear sounds similar to Redbud tree, Sultan, Dream of drown submariner... (5:38-5:40)

      Hi Chris! For strings this time I tried D'Addario XT Acoustic Phosphor Bronze 12-53, great strings. I also use Martin Retro strings. My equipment is very easy... Two large diaphraghm microphones for guitar, one instrumental mic for my voice, it all goes into Zoom H6 card and gets recorded on my MacBook Pro. That's it! The guitar is Gibson Advanced Jumbo, 1997 model year. Regular model, no Custom Shop, no Brazilian Rosewood, not a collector's choice, just a regular jumbo and it sounds like a dream!
